Former Rockies 1st-round pick Riley Pint retires

Right-handed pitcher Riley Pint, who has battled injuries and control problems since being drafted by the Rockies fourth overall in 2016, has decided to retire, Rockies assistant general manager of player development Zach Wilson said.

Pint, 23, capable of triple-digits fastballs when selected out of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Overland Park, Kansas, was 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA in 10 games at Class A Spokane this season when he came to the decision.

Pint dealt with forearm stiffness and a strained oblique in 2017, and he struggled with his control. At Class A Asheville, he walked 59 in 93 innings pitched. As Pint’s career progressed, the Rockies shifted him to relief work full-time in 2019. This year, the overall results were solid, but control was still an issue—17 strikeouts and 10 walks in 10 2/3 innings pitched.

Wilson said the door is open for Pint to return, and the club supports him no matter what direction he takes.

The Red Sox have the 4th pick in the draft this year - the only time they had a higher pick was in 1966, when they had the 3rd overall pick. They chose a pitcher, Mike Garman, that year, which didn't pan out. They also drafted Trey Ball with the 7th pick in 2013, and he never panned out, either...that Clemens kid went 19th in the early 1980s, and that worked out pretty well, though...

Overall, Boston has drafted a pitcher in the first round 26 times. Only five times did the pitcher produce more than 5.2 career win shares: Clemens, Aaron Sele, Bruce Hurst, Clay Buchholz, and Ken Brett. (A few other guys, like Matt Barnes and Michael Kopech, could still end up doing well on this list.)


Anyway, my take is that the fan base does not want the team to blow this pick on a pitcher, because the chance he will pan out in a meaningful way just feels really low, and the data seem to bear this out. Don't get cute: Take the best bat available, and move on.

I finally gave up on this guy on my fantasy league team - also a high first-round pick - in April. so he didn't outlast my own impatience by much.

This is the kid that was profiled as a high schooler in Jeff Passan's book "The Arm."
