4 arrested at Maven Hotel, police feared a ‘Las Vegas-style shooting’ during All-Star Game in Denver

Sources said police removed 16 long guns, body armor and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition from the room which featured a balcony overlooking the downtown area. The sources said they feared the number of weapons, ammo, vantage point and large crowds could have resulted in a “Las Vegas-style shooting.”

Based on the information provided by the hotel employee, police executed a search warrant and found the guns, ammo, body armor and a man inside the room on the eighth floor.

One of the suspects arrested Friday night had posted a message on Facebook referencing a recent divorce and saying he was going to “go out in a big way,” according to the multiple law enforcement sources.

I don’t know. 4 people all agreeing to do a LV style shooting? I guess anything’s possible. Letting the maid in to see your stash?

All the same, good idea to impound them and ask a few questions.

We’ll likely find out this is related to a gun show

We have no reason to believe this incident was connected to terrorism or a threat directed at the All-Star Game. We are not aware of any threat to the All-Star Game events, venues, players, or the community at this time.

— FBI Denver (@FBIDenver) July 11, 2021

rest assured, everyone: this large stockpile of weapons and ammunition wasn't a specific threat to the all-star game; it was just a general threat to anyone who happened to be around.

No need to worry, just your typical Americans walking around with 16 long guns, body armor and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition. Perfectly normal.

I would phrase it as: It's oddly fitting for people not to get shot because gun laws allowed the police to take the bad guys' guns away.

1) Political correctness -- and a craven MLB establishment, terrified of being called racists by some nutfudge on Twitter -- move the ASG from Atlanta to Denver.
2) Undesirables go to Denver with Lotsa Gunz (tm).

Thankfully, all those arrested were members of the Phillies' bullpen, so authorities conclude the ammo would have never come CLOSE to hitting the target.

Too soon?

Don't think so, the 3 guys all had extensive criminal records and they got busted for a "significant" amount of drugs in the room as well as the guns. But I agree it seems unlikely they were planning a mass shooting, that's typically the proverbial "lone gunman" I think. I guess we'll find out.

If you're MLB Commissioner—aka, head of a large, multi-billion dollar entertainment industry—and you've got one of your business's showcase events coming up—the All-Star Game—why would you have your most valuable assets—players, most having no education beyond high school or for whom English is a second language—answer questions on a national stage about a sensitive topic unrelated to your business in an era where outrage is a highly trafficked currency?

It often seems difficult to come across as more clueless or out of touch than Manfred, but assuming his motivation was political correctness easily pulls it off.

But they didn't. Such would seem the main point of #5.

Meanwhile, your proposed causal sequence is nuts. Even if you believe moving the AS game was unjustified and "politically correct", how does that remotely cause "Lotsa Guns"? A does not cause B much less C here.

Here's a tip: heavily-armed nutjobs that want to kill people will cook up some excuse to kill people. That excuse will have little/no basis in reality much less provide any justification for killing people. It requires a sociopathic personality to identify the excuse as any part of the problem.

Thanks for listening to my TED talk.

That's because you've probably been vaccinated and the Bill Gates Chip-o-rama is now telling you how to think. Wake up sheeple, this isn't the fault of the men running around with drugs and guns, it's the fault of, hang on lemme check oh yeah, the people who decided to move the All Star Game from Atlanta to Denver.

Side note, Manfred got booed every time he went on stage at the draft last night and every time he gave a little smile. To his credit he seems to be rolling with the punches pretty good (he still sucks but at least he seems like a decent guy).

I've needlessly meddled with September roster sizes, the trade deadlines, and All-Star Game voting. I've killed off the low minors. What can I do to get even more heat? .......... GAMBLING! "Get woke, go broke."

There's nothing wrong with doing things for financial reasons, and the ASG was moved to Denver for exactly that reason. Fine.

What makes it craven, however, is their loud proclamations that they did this entirely for social justice -- the same social justice none of them gave a good g@ddamn about before the cities started burning last summer. So, let's slap a new coat of paint on the old girl -- it costs us nothing, and makes us smell like a rose. (Racists, us? Perish the thought!)

Nobody -- literally nobody -- is fooled by this dog and pony show, and the people who are least fooled are the wokemeisters themselves, who are not only not impressed, but are emboldened. They're like dogs: they can smell fear. So, keep on insisting that acquiescing is the thing to do, smug in the knowledge that the beast will eat you last. No, pally, it's coming for you first. And nothing you do will ever be enough. Nothing.

This kind of thing probably sounds good in the writer's head as a smart turn of phrase but it doesn't actually make any sense. Like, they're obviously coming for you first.

I mean the rest of it was crazy too I just wanted to focus on the one specific thing that was crazy but also especially dumb.
   28. My name is Votto, and I love to get Moppo Posted: July 12, 2021 at 01:25 PM (#6028759)
The end result of the law puts in place more restrictions, but it's debatable what impact they will have: early voting has been hugely popular in Georgia, and is actually expanded, but it will be harder to vote by mail/drop box. Whether the interest in vote-by-mail continues post-COVID is an open question.

However, what is indisputable is:
1. the REASON to tighten voting laws is not based on any evidence of fraud. The main reason legislatures are passing these laws is because a prominent crybaby keeps talking about stolen elections.
2. only one party wants to keep the number of voters down. Trump, McConnell, Graham have all said as much.

I expect it will. "Vote when it's convenient to you rather than standing in line on one random day" is kind of an easy call for people.
   30. Starring Bradley Scotchman as RMc Posted: July 12, 2021 at 02:28 PM (#6028768)
It would be nice is Rob Manfred would just be honest about it:

"Look, people, we're trying to run a business here. The ASG was in Atlanta, but Georgia re-wrote its voting laws to make it tougher on Democrats, or at least that's the way it's being perceived by the media. And when anything gets tougher for Democrats, they immediately start shrieking like six-year-old girls, shouting "Racist!" the same way they used to shout "Commie!" back in the 1950s. (I realize most of you media hacks are in your mid-20s and have never covered anything except politics, so you'll have to Google it.) And they do this cuz it works. (Why would you not do something that works? Because the people you despise will call you out on it? Who cares what they think?)

So, yeah, we're moving the game to Denver, because we're not about to endanger our multi-billion dollar concern. We're hoping this nonsense will just blow over, but, of course, by cowering in the corner like this, we're making it easier for this woke sh!t to keep happening. Ah, well. I'm old, and I'll be dead before things really get bad in this country. See you in hell."

Manfred would of course be fired on the spot...so, it's a win-win!

People.

Particularly those people who live in the largest urban areas (where voting wait times can be ridiculous w/o early/mail voting option), or those people who have a history of heading to the polls in unison for early voting after church on Sunday (as has been in the practice for any black churches in the area), etc, etc. I don't think it's fair to say the Georgia laws are making it equally difficult for all the residents of the state to vote. They have clearly made it more difficult for some people. It's true that not ALL of those people are Dems/likely blue voters, but I'd hazard a guess that the Georgia GOP has a hunch that the numbers favor their party.
   39. Mike A Posted: July 12, 2021 at 07:46 PM (#6028830)
They're reducing ballot drop boxes in Atlanta's top four counties from 111 to 23 and limiting their hours.

It's pretty obvious who this is intended to affect.

Yes, I'm sure they did, but framing it as "Democrats complaining about difficulties in Democrats voting" is how they turn it into a us vs them scenario.

If you say that the voter law changes make it difficult for people to vote, then you force those that support the law to say that they are favour of making it difficult for people to vote. It's not certain groups of people, but people in general, the people in that state.

One party says they want to make it more difficult for people in that state to vote. The other party says they want to make it easier to vote (or leave it the way it was).

   41. bookbook Posted: July 13, 2021 at 07:01 PM (#6028975)
The most important thing about the Georgia voting law is not the voter suppression targeting black people (though it does do that, in spades). Voter suppression can potentially be overcome, at least partially.

What the Georgia law does that threatens democracy is take certification away from officials who potentially will act impartially. Now, Georgia elections will be certified—or reversed—by elected officials who live, breathe, and die by pure political motivations, without much regard for truth or fairness. Georgia Republicans have empowered themselves to overturn future Democratic victories.

This is not about PC or about creating unfair barriers to competition. This is about undermining democracy itself.

PS The “lone wolf” theory of mass shootings is overstated. Timothy McVeigh and many other shooters were effectively activated by the histrionic rhetoric of racism and race-fear. McVeigh and others were aided by allies in accumulation and deployment. The good news is that this means proactive measures can solve a big portion of this problem. The bad news is that the U.S. government, in an effort to be PC and not offend the white supremacist snowflakes, has always backed off taking the necessary steps to curtail the violence and murder.

Idiot conservatives attempt atrocities, and someone's feefees are hurt by the association so they have to mash the "liberals are the real problem" button. So predictable, and so sad.

Yeah my general approach towards Manny Machado is \"#### Manny Machado" but he (and Tatis, Myers and presumably a few others) definitely stepped up here.

Honestly when I saw what was happening I was really worried about the possibility of a panic situation and people getting hurt (e.g. Hillsborough in England). I think the Nats deserve considerable credit for getting people out of the stadium safely.

The three men arrested have been charged with various gun and drug charges, but still no charges involving any planned attack or anything to do with the all Star game. Maybe law enforcement is still building a case, but it seems silly to argue about the motivations of the potential shooters when we don’t even know they were planning any sort of attack.
