Francisco Lindor’s ‘rat’ tale unnecessary drama for Mets

The Mets’ $341-million man enjoyed his best game with his new team, slamming a game-tying, two-run homer in the seventh inning as the Mets registered arguably their biggest win of the season, 5-4 in 10 innings over the Diamondbacks at Citi Field. Yet following the game, the result became secondary to an out-of-sight disagreement, dutifully documented by the Mets’ own regional sports network, SNY, between Lindor and his double-play partner Jeff McNeil in the middle of the seventh inning.

That disagreement, a laughing Lindor told reporters a few minutes after the Mets prevailed on a swinging bunt by rookie Patrick Mazeika (his first career RBI), entailed whether Lindor and McNeil, situated in the tunnel that connects the home team’s dugout to its clubhouse saw a rat or a raccoon.

“I told [McNeil], ‘Hey, I’ve never seen a New York rat,’ ” Lindor explained. “So we went down sprinting to go see a New York rat. And he got mad at me. He’s like, ‘No, it’s not a rat, it’s a raccoon.’ I’m like, ‘Hell, no, man.’ … Crazy, because we were going back and forth whether it was a rat or raccoon.”

WORST cover-up ever !!!!!!

Is the insinuation that Lindor and McNeill got into a real argument or a fight and "rat vs. raccoon" is the cover story? I saw one of the Mets beat reporters tweeting about this and there was so little substance to it that I thought it was some silly "Diesel Donnie" silliness, not a real disagreement.

Mr Lindor may be implying that, in Mr Lindor's opinion, Mr McNeil was the NY rat in question.

Lindor: how are you doing ?
McNeil: “I don’t want to talk about it “
Lindor: “are we ever going to get past this”
McNeil “it just happened last inning”
Lindor: “you know how a year to a person is like 7 years to a rat “
McNeil: “is one of us supposed to be a rat in this scenario?”
Lindor : “yes”
McNeil : “who is the rat?!”
Lindor : “you are”
McNeil: “I am?, I am ? I am the rat?”
Lindor nods
McNeil: if anyone is the rat, you are. You want to act like what happened didn’t mean anything”
Lindor : I’m a raccoon

"So you had a brief but noticeable disagreement with a teammate, and now you want to let it blow over, to put it behind you as quickly as possible? But instead of just saying that, you act like a condescending douche who gets ripped by your own team's network post-game/ex-player for insulting everyone's intelligence and who, based on the GM's comments this afternoon, didn't impress him, either? Well, we'll see about THAT!" - the New York media

I am trying to imagine the ways in which people - who aren't even your supposed superiors - sh it on a few of of you in your workplaces (bonus points for doing it in a very public environment) and you just bow your heads submissively and say, 'Thank you sir, may I have another?'

I may not agree with the way a lot of beat people tend to carry a grudge, but if someone acts like this in my workplace, I'm certainly going to have a conversation with them and let them - and their bosses - know what I think of their douchery.

Lindor acted like a dick last night - whatever one thinks of the media should not distort recognizing that fact. fanboy-ism need only go so far.

This is some pretty pathetic drama queening, Howie. There is absolutely no reason for anyone - sportswriter or otherwise - to take this personally. Go find a safe space to get over it instead of pretending like this is some kind of respect in the workplace issue.

And it's all posturing on your part anyway, because you know even better than I do that sportswriters are thrilled about this, because it gives them something to talk about for a few days since they're too inane to come up with anything interesting on their own. Fake ginned-up scandals like this the lifeblood of the sportswriting industry, and we all know you're being disingenuous to pretend otherwise.

He made what could have been a nothing story something, and put his teammates/manager/GM in an awkward position. McNeil in particular. Criticism is fair.

In McNeil's Saturday postgame media availability, Lindor hugged him, yelled "rat-coon" at the camera, and then left.

Is the insinuation that Jeff Kent was really popping wheelies while riding his motorcycle and not washing his truck?

Well, it wasn’t just insinuated, it was flat-out alleged in many corners. We also knew that Kent had broken his wrist and (IIRC) that his contract prohibited riding motorcycles.

If a reporter had just tweeted “Jeff Kent says he fell while washing his truck yesterday, likely story” but without any of the additional context I would also have wondered why I should care.

If I recall, the media initially published his story & it just sounded like a weird, unfortunate injury...... Then some independent third-party witnesses to the motorcycle crash came forward and said they saw him hurt himself that way.

I'm so confused as to where the intelligence is insulted. Does the reporter think that Lindor expects them to believe his joke and print it as real news? He gets that it's a joke right? And not a joke at the reporter's expense but just a funny way to deflect. They could totally roll with it and get some interesting content from it as other's have done. I guess 'outraged boomer takes' is all this guy knows how to write.

It's like Lindor served them a steak dinner and he's complaining that it's not lobster.

let me take one more swing

Yeah great, what don't I know? Please, do elaborate.

ok

"sportswriters are thrilled about this, because it gives them something to talk about for a few days since they're too inane to come up with anything interesting on their own. Fake ginned-up scandals like this the lifeblood of the sportswriting industry, and we all know you're being disingenuous to pretend otherwise."

where to begin? maybe with the fact that contrary to the belief by you and by Post 26, this issue did NOT get a lot of clicks because the average fan doesn't care (which is fine). and if I hadn't posted on this thread, it would have been one of the sad threads that disappeared before reaching double digits in posts. so much for that theory. #swingandamiss

then there is the rampant stereotyping, which of course is the "lifeblood" of knuckle-draggers. never mind that the "scandal" wasn't "ginned-up" because it's mostly an inside-baseball issue.

or to put it another way, a topic for "The Thinking Fan." in theory, anyhow.

it's intriguing how much baseball fans think they know about the media, when in fact they not only don't know, many demonstrate it on a regular basis.

hard as it is for many to imagine, the beat is an actual workplace environment (an unusual one, especially so in the case of a pandemic, but still). a level of professionalism is expected of adults - that's why both post-game guy Todd Zeile and the Mets GM were so annoyed. having someone be a dick while representing your company is frustrating.

there was no joke being offered - just a clown who decided to make up a juvenile story, and double and triple down on it. as I noted earlier, what do you guys put up with in YOUR workplace from people who are not your bosses? now, in a direct retail setting, in effect the customer is the boss - and that makes it more difficult to reject obnoxious behavior. but this is not that, and even in that case there are limits.

"It's like Lindor served them a steak dinner and he's complaining that it's not lobster."

"it's like Lindor served them a sh it sandwich and he's complaining that it's not edible" - ftfy - and instead is the condescending work of an adolescent. how anyone could mistake sh it for steak is exactly the magnitude of the crossed wires here.

pretty sure this is about as far as I'll go here - you get it, you don't, you didn't get it but now you do, whatever.

   28. BillWallace Posted: May 10, 2021 at 10:00 PM (#6018185)

Idk man, I swear I have no bias against media or beat writers or whatever. I've consumed thousands of pages of beat writing content in my life and it's added value. But the thing is this is obviously a silly joke. And I fail to see how it's an affront to anyone or in any way represents Lindor being a dick.

What's the non-dick alternative to it? Lindor gives a Crash Davis approved 'non-answer', right? So why is this joke so bad? Is he forcing them to take it seriously thus making them look foolish? Is he disrupting their process by not giving them the 'non-answer' that they need to complete their story? Seriously, can you describe in any kind of deeper level what the offense here is?

"you get it, you don't"

I guess me and just about everyone else in this thread are going to land on "don't"
To be clear, making up a clearly untrue juvenile story while not actually expecting people to take it as the truth is absoutely a kind of joke.

Sorry, Howie, with all due respect this isn't Azerbaijan and Armenia. It's two jocks yelling at each other briefly, then blowing it off as a wildlife identification discussion. Do we really need a serious in-depth report on the exact nature of the 13 second argument they had?
   30. Howie Menckel Posted: May 10, 2021 at 11:12 PM (#6018196)
this isn't Azerbaijan and Armenia.

I know this is a variation on Godwin's Law but not sure which one it is - waste time commenting on an obviously relatively (in the grand scheme of events) minor issue, yet criticize someone else who previously commented on it.

presumably you could have spent that minute instead sending money online to relief efforts in Azerbaijan and/or Armenia. do we really need a flippant remark on BBTF, when you could have been doing something more constructive? shame on you - apparently. but that's your angle, not mine.

as for the "offense," Lindor was not involved in some sort of "play" with the beat guys. they were asking questions, and he - was it the $341 million contract talking? - decided he could proverbially piss on them and claim it was raining. that level of condescension was not a joke at all.

his manager was annoyed enough not to play along, the ex-player on the Mets' own station ripped Lindor, and the GM was clearly ticked off. but what do a manager, an ex-player, and a GM know, compared to the sages here at BBTF? maybe you can explain to all three of them what they are missing. I'm sure they'd welcome the advice.

ok, done with this one for sure.

you get it, you don't, you didn't get it but now you do, whatever (probably the second one).

#Godspeed

If anyone is mad about this, they shouldn't be. You seem to be mad on their behalf, and that also seems ridiculous.

Either way, it's very silly and no matter how much you try to pretend like it's a huge deal, it's really not.

Dude, this is the third thread you posted about this in. You posted your hot take in the night-of Omnichatter, then you re-posted your original comment in the next day's chatter, and then you posted here. You've worked awfully hard to make this a story here and still continue to do so. Which is exactly the kind of behavior I and others have been describing.
   33. Brian C Posted: May 11, 2021 at 12:18 AM (#6018200)
Which, by the way, here's your original comment (which again, you were so proud of, you posted it in two different threads!):
Lindor just screwed his own pooch.

after the obvious hostility between he and McNeil in this game - and the numerous Mets clambering behind him from the dugout to the clubhouse (and McNeil) - this guy has the stones, with a straight face, to claim that oh, it was just a spirited debate between the two about whether a large animal in the clubhouse was a racoon or a "New York rat."

the NYC beat writers - yeah, they didn't buy it. but Lindor stuck to this ridiculous story - which postgame analyst Todd Zeile described as "mockery" of the beat guys. he also called it "complete nonsense" and "disingenuous."

Zeile said he appreciates a desire to try to downplay such incidents - but he played in NY, and he knows how this will go. after a series of challenges, Lindor was asked if he and McNeil really were "good."

Lindor replied that, hey, he could bring Jeff in and kiss on the cheek if they really wanted.
a beat guy replied, "ok, let's do that."

you're not in Cleveland anymore, kid - as you're about to learn.

Mets manager Luis Rojas says he knows nothing about a rat-raccoon situation. He is not playing into this story one bit. Rojas says he was satisfied that whatever happened between Lindor and McNeil was over and done with by the time he got down the dugout steps.

Nothing about how this was a workplace respect issue in which the poor put-upon beats were being disrespected blah blah blah - just tough-guy bravado about how Lindor will have to get used to the NYC buzzsaw. "You're not in Cleveland anymore, kid" - talk about condescending.

Your high horse is extremely tedious. Come down off it.
