Will this be like Lazzeri’s long ago promise of “100 dollar bucks” for everyone if Bryce Harper made the Majors?

Brett Gardner’s solo HR, his first of the season, gives the Yankees a 1-0 lead. Winning a series against the Rays & free beer would be a pretty good day.

Ray up 2-1. Sending the Yankees back to fourth place, which is where their meager runs scored pace suggests they belong, far behind the plucky Rays who seem to invent wins out of thin air, would be a better day.

Fucking home plate umpire just gave Yarbrough two called strikes on balls that were a good 4" outside, converting what should've been a four pitch walk into a strikeout. This sort of crap happens every goddam game.

now 5-1 Rays vs Cole in 5th

Cole walked two guys today. After that long streak of not walking anyone, he's now walked eight in his last four starts.

Evidence was presented at the MLB owners meetings to suggest that the use of illegal foreign substances by pitchers trying to enhance spin rates and get an edge is “very prevalent” in the game. So the crackdown will now commence in earnest.

Reminiscing about mid-80s baseball while waiting for the Braves to lose and the Minor League bbref for Vince Coleman looks like an error.

In 323 minor league games (82-84) Coleman was 289/359 on stolen bases. He attempted more stolen bases than games played. I want someone to try that now so badly.

Also, Ron Acuña is basically peak Eric Davis with a little more power and no green light to run.

Another day, another chance for Mike Shildt to increase his lead in IBBs.

Sox finally pull one back from Astros. Good starting pitching finally pays off as the Sox actually score more then 1 run. It's not the best Sox team of the last 20 years, but so far the cobbled together SP is keeping most games close enough for the bats to overcome. I'm still waiting for the real .500 2021 Boston Red Sox to show up but enjoying the performance thus far.

Wainwright with back-to-back HBP in the first inning, the second one forcing in a run.

Cardinals have an MLB-leading 42 HBP; MLB average is 24.

In 2019 (the last full season), Miami led MLB with 90 HBP--tied for the 8th-most since 1900. No team has hit more than 100 batters in a season. Cardinals are on pace for 119.
   14. salvomania Posted: June 03, 2021 at 08:42 PM (#6022424)
Since 1900, the 2003 (95) and 2002 (94) Devil Rays have the highest single-season HBP totals.
   15. salvomania Posted: June 03, 2021 at 09:04 PM (#6022428)
Cardinals also lead MLB in BB/9 at 4.7, and, with a K/9 rate that ranks 27th, they are the only team in MLB below a 2:1 K:BB ratio---and they're quite a bit below, at 1.77.

The one thing their staff does well is limit home runs---their 0.73/9ip rate is the best in MLB, as is their 40 HR allowed. Average MLB rate is 1.2 per 9, a rate that would translate to 25 more homers allowed than they have thus far.

EDIT: Winker HR off Wainwright pushes Cardinals' HR rate down to 2nd best (.750/9, just behind Mets, at .748/9). Red Sox are right behind at .754/9.

Another HBP by Wainwright, his third of the game. Reds' announcers are speculating this may be what we'll be seeing more of now that MLB will be cracking down on illegal grip-improving substances.

Rick Ankiel on the Cardinals broadcast tonight, and he is surprisingly excellent. Just a very conversational style with a lot of matter of fact commentary, a little humor, good insights, and seems to actually say something interesting when he decides to talk. His voice, while restrained, has life, energy and personality.

My favorite so far: "As you know, baseball is a game of centimeters."

AAA Pitcher Hospitalized After Taking Comeback Liner To Head:
Thursday's Triple-A game between the Norfolk Tides and Durham Bulls was called in the eighth inning after Bulls pitcher Tyler Zombro was hit in the head by a line drive. Zombro, a 26-year-old reliever for the Tampa Bay Rays affiliate, appeared to be convulsing on the mound before being taken off the field on a stretcher as his teammates looked on.

In a statement after the game was called, the Rays said Zombro was transported to Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina, where he was in stable condition and undergoing further treatment and observation.
I remember Bryce Florie taking one that ended his career, but Mike Mussina bounced back from one that looked about as bad. Hoping for the best.

the Mets have played the fewest games in MLB - their 49th is still going tonight in SD - yet used the most players, 45.

I think they have 16 players on IL
