Garrett Richards, Boston Red Sox reach 1-year, $10 million deal, sources say


Starting pitcher Garrett Richards and the Boston Red Sox have agreed to a one-year, $10 million deal, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Saturday.

The deal is pending a physical.

Richards’ biggest success during the pandemic-shortened season was staying healthy. The veteran right-hander made 10 starts for the San Diego Padres in 2020, going 2-2 with a 4.03 ERA, 46 strikeouts and 17 walks. He was moved to the bullpen late in the season and during the playoffs.

The guy hasn't thrown more than 76 1/3 innings since 2015. I'm surprised he got more than JA Happ.

From the reporting around here it seems the big appeal for the Sox was a club option for 2022. Given the upside with Richards and the fact that the Sox aren’t really looking at 2021 as a year to contend that probably explains some of it.

At this point I’m assuming most everyone is getting 1/$10 with a club option. It seems like the contract of the day.

Did he have the best season of any Angels' SP from the past 10 years? I remembered a stretch of excellence, but even in his 2014 season he didn't get any Cy Young votes.
