Gary Sánchez, Mets agree to Minors deal

Catcher Gary Sánchez has agreed to a Minor League deal with the Mets, the team announced Tuesday. Sánchez will report to Triple-A Syracuse.

Terms of the agreement weren’t released, but according to a report from MLB Network insider Jon Heyman, Sánchez would earn $1.5 million if he makes the Majors and the deal includes $1.2 million in incentives.

The 30-year-old backstop opted out of his deal with the Giants last week when he was not promoted to the big league roster. In 16 games with Triple-A Sacramento, Sánchez batted .164 with no homers and eight RBIs, along with 19 strikeouts.

Such a shame the cardinals didn't sign him. Then they'd have a platoon of catchers who couldn't call a game but could hit

He hasn't really hit since 2019. .195/.287/.394 (89 OPS+) from 2020-22, with his best season being 2021 (.204/.307/.423, 99 OPS+).

Do the Mets still sign Sanchez if they were confident that Narvaez will be ready to rejoin the club a month from now?

Nearly simultaneously, Nido went on the IL with a vision problem, so [3] probably.

Re 2: It's not easy having a BA that low and still have a decent OPS+. Only eight batters in history have managed a 99 OPS+ with an average of .204 and lower (min 400 PA), led by Joey Gallo's hallucinating 2021 (199/351/458, 121 OPS+)...

Why wouldn't the Mets want a poor defensive catcher who can't hit?
