Gavin Lux likely to miss season with torn ACL

Awful news for Lux and the Dodgers.

The Dodgers’ worst-case scenario came true on Tuesday as MRIs revealed that starting shortstop Gavin Lux tore his right ACL and LCL, effectively ending his 2023 season.

Lux was running the bases when he suffered the injury, ducking for a split second to avoid a throw from Padres third baseman Jantzen Witte. Lux stumbled in the process and his right knee buckled awkwardly after a couple of steps.

Jurickson Profar, YOU are a Los Angeles Dodger!

Been there, done that ... well most of it, torn ACL, partial tear MCL. Not recommended but not life-altering. Anyway, if all goes well and he busts his ass, he could possibly be back in Sept/playoffs (Schwarber 2016). But sure, it's right about now a team regrets not re-signing Seager or Turner or getting Correa or X or at least grabbing Andrus when he was just sitting there.

Friedman knows what he's doing obviously and I assume this is a reset year or something but it's confusing to see a team that at one time had a roster with T Turner, Seager, Muncy, Lux, J Turner, Taylor (and before that Kike for T Turner) playing mix and match is now down to Miguel Rojas and Taylor and I don't kno who. I assume some of those kids on the 40-man play IF but they'll be asking a lot of them now. And is Mookie the CF now or am I overlooking somebody?

The pitching staff is still pretty awesome and Mookie, Freddie and Will Smith are a fine offensive core but there look to be major holes out in LA this year. I blame ... [spins wheel] ... huh, Hugo Chavez, that was unexpected.

Lineup still looks fine. Lux hasn't totally put it together yet, but he had excellent Minor League numbers and was the Dodgers' youngest regular. I thought this might be his breakout year.

Profar -- huh, still available. But just 22 starts at 2B 2020-22 and, per DRS, a very bad one. But without much in the OF and Taylor now probably needed full-time on the IF, Profar still fits. I suppose Boston would be happy to move Kike's salary but not sure what that does to the CBT reset (if this is a CBT reset) or the owners' profits (if that's the goal).

I think the Cubs like Hoerner a good bit but I suspect a big enough package of prospects could pry him loose. DeJong maybe. I hear tell the O's have like 20 top 10 prospects that all play SS and the Padres have 9 superstar SS under 13-year deals. Also Javy Baez. And Mike Crudale.

Lux was supposed to be the new SS, with rookie Vargas going to 2B and Muncy at 3B.

now Rojas and Taylor will get time at SS. the main reason to add Profar would be if you expect Taylor to play a ton in the INF.

Trayce "not Mychal or Klay" Thompson may get CF vs righties. Mookie of course, and BBTF fave Jason Heyward is competing with David Peralta and James Outman for OF time. maybe Steven Duggar or Bradley Zimmer, too.

Dodgers say Mookie may get time at 2B this season.

I'd have to think Gregorius would be a more likely signing than Profar for LAD. Profar seems like he's a passable corner OFer and not good at other positions.

I suspect they'll actually go with Rojas and Taylor being the primary options and Amaya being the emergency option. Amaya is 95% likely to be ineffective with the bat. But, his D is already MLB caliber at SS (at least as good as Lux's was likely to be and probably better).

This does suck for Lux and the Dodgers though.

Amaya's a Marlin, though.

DeJong is probably available.

Grrr ... forgot Muncy in my spiels. Well remembered him when I was first thinking it through then forgot about him. Stupid brain.

OK, so, noticed that Amaya was the guy sent for Rojas.....that probably leaves Yonny Hernandez as next up as the emergency option. He's the type of guy who if he wasn't Latino would be called a "gritty scrappy gamer" so I mean, you can do worse. You know he's always going to be trying his best. His hit tool is pretty much ML average.....but he's basically power free. If he hits a HR, its likely someone fell down in the OF. He is pretty fast at least.

Yonny isn't a disaster to have as your 3rd option. But, they should go get someone like Gregorius too if possible (doubt he takes a contract to be minor league depth).

Didi can get an NRI, maybe get a $1 M guaranteed with an opening day roster bonus and other incentives. He's got no negotiating leverage left after two sub-replacement seasons with apparently quite bad defense. His future is either AAA or a 2023-24 offseason retirement announcment.

In his season with the A's (2019) Profar was horrible at second base mainly due to his throwing yips. There was no such thing as a routine play you held your breath when the ball was hit to him.

The Orioles have like six legit shortstops in spring training camp right now. I'd be surprised if the Dodgers aren't burning the phone lines between LA and Baltimore.

Mookie may get time at SS this season, now.

Would he really be much worse than Jeter was?

Paul Dejong, get ready to be a Dodger
