Giants call up Kazmir to make 1st start since 2016

Scott Kazmir’s comeback tour will make its first official stop at Oracle Park.

The San Francisco Giants called up the 37-year-old left-hander to start against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday, the team announced.

Kazmir has not appeared in the majors since 2016 but earned the promotion after posting a 2.84 ERA in 6 1/3 innings for Triple-A Sacramento.

The three-time All-Star signed a minor-league deal with the Giants this offseason after touching 92-93 mph during a comeback showcase in front of teams.

Kazmir spent the 2020 campaign in the independent Constellation Energy League after not pitching professionally in 2018 or 2019.

Hey pitched really well, considering. Just Max Muncy got to him.

I for some reason always mix up Scott Kazmir and Scott Radinsky.

Is Hendrickson the only player who was drafted by MLB six times? He was selected in every draft from 1992-97 (by ATL, SD, ATL again, DET, TEX and TOR, respectively); and, yes, he was also taken in the NBA draft (76ers in 1992).

Obbide McDowell was drafted six times, although back then they had a January secondary draft too.

Tim Lincecum is his second-most similar pitcher (for now). Kazmir and Lincecum combined to make 44 starts for the L.A. Angels, going 13-19 with an ERA over six.

It must be weird for Hendrickson (and others like him -- Chad Hutchinson, Drew Henson, etc.) to be such a truly amazing, world-class athlete that he can play two sports professionally at the highest level, but have people tell him "You suck!" in both of them.

Was Hendrickson the guy who screwed himself in the draft or was that some other guy?

You may be thinking of Matt Harrington.

I think being drafted 6 times is the record. Although if Mark Hendrickson could get drafted 6 times in 6 years, I would think someone in the early 80s could have been drafted 7 times in 4 years.

One of the six teams that drafted Oddibe McDowell was the Twins in 1983. One of only 3 Twins picks in 1983 who made the majors, all 3 of whom declined to sign with the Twins (Tim Belcher, Bill Swift and McDowell). Belcher was the first overall pick and Swift was the first pick in the second round. Possibly the worst draft effort by any team in history. I believe the Twins were flat broke at the time.

Scott Kazmir's highly anticipated debut in 2004 was a source of controversy in my fantasy league. We were an AL-only league, so no one owned him as he came over from the Mets in a mid-season trade. We were really just a few years removed from the Commissioner entering all the stats manually out of Sporting News or USA Today, we were a weekly transaction league. We would actually get together to conduct the draft each year, gather in the same room, bid values for a player in an auction where each team had the same budget limit. (Weird, right?)

The controversy came because somebody put in a Sunday night claim for Kazmir, and Commissioner granted the claim, but Kazmir's first start was Monday 23Aug. So when was he ACTUALLY called up? Was it after the Sunday game (and before midnight) or was it actually Monday (which would affect the order of the waiver claim process, and push it to the next Sunday.)

Well it got so heated that one guy in the league fired up a search engine (remember when there was dozens, not just google?) and found a name and number in Tampa. Jose somebody, director of scouting, or vp of minor league operations, or something. He phones Tampa, asks for Jose by name, gets put through. Jose says "we announced it to the media on Sunday, but technically the transaction was on Monday." Buddy asks the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to put that in writing (well, an email would do) to help settle this fantasy league problem in Toronto. And Jose does it! Claim revoked/denied!

Oddibe McDowell, he played in the same OF as Barry Bonds at Arizona State.
I thought "well, first of all, they'll win the Pac-10, and then they'll go to Omaha, and win there. And then they'll go wherever they go in the majors, and meet up again at Cooperstown." I'm not dumb, but I need to admit I was wrong. As wrong as the six teams who drafted McDowell.

I had a fantasy league break up because the sumbitch that lucked into Hideki Irabu was going to win for the next thousand years or something.

That's a tough lineup for a debut. A couple HOFers, and a couple All-Stars, and a few roiders, and a few hustlers. When the 1B is the cupcake, you might be in for tough sledding.

Kazmir's debut game was interesting to me for a personal reason as well. Opposing him in that TB@SEA tilt on 23Aug2004 was Bobby Madrisitch (that's not the interesting part, trust me), and SEA brought in Clint Nageotte in relief.

Well in 2002 I drank a beer with Clint Nageotte at spring training. He had already struck out 187 in Wisconsin, then 214 in San Bernadino, and he was ticketed for AA San Antonio. I forget how the meet was set up? I was with my friend from NE Ohio, and Nageotte was raised just south of Cleveland (and drafted out of high school,) so that was how it happened. They had a mutual friend, or their coaches knew each other, or something?

Clint was a super guy, relaxed and quiet. He was a rising prospect, but you would never have known it. Meanwhile in the next room of the bar, things were growing louder. The Mariners split their spring training complex in Peoria with San Diego. Two big boys on the Padres team at that time were Ryan Klesko and Phil Nevin, and they were generously using their millions to take care of everybody. It was all going swimmingly until rookie Sean Burroughs fell over into two tables filled with food and drinks.

I can't be sure, because it happened fast, but I think it was Mark Kotsay who emerged from a corner and yelled "I was never here" as he hit the door. One lady was wearing a plate of nachos and a pitcher of beer, and another was on the floor crying that her hip had been broken. A quiet fell over our table, and although Clint was 21 I don't think he wanted to be seen there by Bruce Bochy or Pat Gillick, should they happen by in the next 20 minutes. He rubbed his beer bottle, and said to me, Mrs Snowboy, and my friend from Ashtabula County "it's been nice meeting you, I think I'm gonna get going now."
