Giants Place Zack Cozart On Release Waivers

The Giants have placed veteran infielder Zack Cozart on release waivers following his DFA earlier this week, tweets Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area.

Cozart never seemed particularly likely to see the field with the Giants, who have veterans Evan Longoria and Brandon Crawford locked in on the left side of the diamond and promising young Mauricio Dubon likely ticketed for regular reps at second base. San Francisco’s acquisition of the veteran Cozart, rather, was a pure means of buying 2019 first-round pick Will Wilson from the Angels. The Halos, eager to move the remaining $12.167MM on Cozart’s three-year contract, sent Wilson to the Giants as the Giants picked up the remaining tab on Cozart.

Reminds me of the Braves eating Bronson Arroyo's contract to get Touki Toussaint a year after Touki was the 16th overall pick. Any time you can flat-out buy a prospect, you do it.

I like the move, but ultimately the cleverness with which a player is acquired has nothing to do with the caliber of the player. Acquiring a great player by boring, dull, plodding, mainstream means will always be better GMing than acquiring a lesser player by "clever" or "creative" means. Given its readily-discernible truth, I would assume there would be unanimity on this point, but much of the rather cultish commentary I see leads me to believe otherwise. Which is, needless to say ... odd.

Why should I care about how a player was acquired beyond what the cost was?

I mean if I'm not trying to build a narrative to target anything "newfangled."

I much prefer the former fangling, myself.

You shouldn't; that's exactly what I'm saying. You really shouldn't even care what the cost was, if the cost was just money, unless it's so much money that it literally crowds out spending on other players -- which very rarely happens.

And 4.5 years later, Toussaint still hasn't done anything. Still only 24 and if he ever learns some control he could turn out good. He looked very studly in 2018 at AA and AAA but looked terrible back in MLB and AAA last year. Even after his excellent 2018, he still only ranked #50 or lower on the 2019 prospect lists. Not sure if the long-term plan now is reliever or starter. Does he have options left?

Arroyo was flipped a month later in another salary dump trade that saw the Braves getting Hector Olivera (oops). The Braves also sent Alex Wood and Jose Peraza to the Dodgers in that trade so it didn't turn out well for Atlanta. The Braves in the short-term and the last two years would have been better off just holding onto Alex Wood and never making the Arroyo/Toussaint trade and therefore never getting Olivera either.

So eating salary if it buys you Alex Wood -- good.** Eating salary if it gets you Touki Toussaint -- not so much.

** Yeah, it's hard to tell. The Braves thought Olivera would be something and maybe the price for him was Wood and the Dodgers ate salary more to get Peraza. Peraza has turned out not so useful which might mean "beware the team selling you a prospect."

Wilson isn't on the BA Giants top 10 prospects list. I'm assuming, without knowing 100%, that BA did the ratings after the acquisition.

dunno, I thought it was interesting how he was acquired but that's just me I guess
