Gladden, Tovar inducted into Twins Hall of Fame

As fitting as it is that Gladden and Gardenhire were inducted to the club Hall of Fame together, it’s also just as apt that the third man who was honored posthumously as part of the weekend’s ceremonies—utility man Cesar Tovar—was the same kind of player that defined Gladden’s tenure in Minnesota, with the speed, grit and hustle out of the leadoff spot that helped to define the late 1960s era of Twins baseball.

While Gladden was around to give his own acceptance speech on Sunday, Tovar died in 1994 and was represented at the ceremony formally inducting the pair as the 36th and 37th members of the Twins Hall of Fame by his family, including his son, Cesar Jr., who gave a speech on his behalf.

“It was just a sense of relief and gratitude that he just could be finally recognized for his contributions to the Twins organization,” said Nancy Jones, Tovar’s daughter. “It’s just immense happiness. The weekend’s been great. Like Dan said, meeting his family and the similarities between players, it just made the weekend even better knowing that they were similar types of ballplayers.”

The bar must be pretty low if Gladden is a Twins' HoFer---he had one season out of five with at least 2.0 WAR (3.5, in 1988) and only put up a cumulative 5.7bWAR in five seasons as the Twins' starting left fielder.

I guess being the starting LF on two championship teams is enough to push him over the line. He had a good postseason in 1987 (16-for-47 six Xbh and 12 rbi in 12 games) but was meh in '91.

Of the 9 American League LFs who played 400+ games from 1987-1991, only Mel Hall has less WAR, and Gladden (90) is the only one with an OPS+ below 100. He was a corner OF who hit like a CF but fielded like a LF.

Gladden was elected because he never left. He's still doing radio for the team.

Twins HoFers (year inducted at left)

2000 Harmon Killebrew (1954-74, 60.4 WAR)
2000 Rod Carew (1967-78, 67.8)
2000 Tony Oliva (1962-76, 43.0)
2000 Kent Hrbek (1981-94, 38.6)
2000 Kirby Puckett (1984-95, 51.2)
2001 Jim Kaat (1959-73, 30.6)
2002 Bert Blyleven (1970-76, 1985-88, 49.1)
2003 Bob Allison (1958-70, 34.2)
2004 Earl Battey (1961-67, 17.6)---first with <10 years with team, <30 WAR
2005 Frank Viola (1982-89, 27.0)
2006 Zoilo Versalles (1959-67, 14.7)
2007 Gary Gaetti (1981-90, 27.1)
2008 Rick Aguilera (1989-99, 15.5)
2009 Brad Radke (1995-2006, 45.6)
2010 Greg Gagne (1983-92, 17.9)
2011 Jim Perry (1963-72, 26.3)
2012 Camilo Pascual (1954-66, 33.2)
2013 Eddie Guardado (1993-2003, 2008, 9.5)
2016 Torii Hunter (1997-2007, 2015, 26.4)
2017 Michael Cuddyer (2001-11, 12.8)
2018 Johan Santana (2000-07, 35.8)
2019 Joe Nathan (2004-11, 18.4)
2020 Justin Morneau (2003-13, 22.9)
2022 Cesar Tovar (1965-72, 25.9)
2022 Dan Gladden (1987-91, 5.7)

So the one thing Gladden has going for him are the two championships (he's the 7th member of the '87 squad to be inducted); he has the fewest years as a Twin and the fewest WAR; only reliever Eddie Guardado has fewer WAR/year.

I guess Tom Brunansky is next up (Twins 1982-88, 16.1 WAR, '87 starting RF).

Gladden was elected because he never left. He's still doing radio for the team.

That makes a lot more sense; I see that a few of the inductees are media, so Gladden gets extra credit for that.

Joe Mauer and Brian Dozier will get inducted into the Twins Hall of Fame next.

Chuck Knoblauch was 10X the player Gladden there bad blood?

Multiple domestic violence incidents.

Oh. Forgot about those. Well, Kirby Puckett is in their HOF, but I guess the induction may have come before his transgressions came to light.

Knoblauch actually got elected to the Twins Hall of Fame, had an induction ceremony scheduled and cancelled.

They should probably induct Dave Goltz pretty soon, he's 73 years old. Born and raised in Minnesota, you think he would be more popular among fans.

Sonny Jurgensen finally getting his number 9 retired by 'ders. he spent 9 seasons in Washington and was part of an NFC title team.

A team HOF is often a low standard vs most statistical measures for obvious reasons. The Twins have those 2 WS wins plus a 1924 one as the Washington Senators so it makes sense they'd be putting into their HOF nearly everyone who was on both teams.

Minnesota playoffs...
WS wins: 1987/1991
WS losses: 1965
ALCS losses: 1969/1970/2002
ALDS losses: 2003/2004/2006/2009/2010/2019
WC losses: 2017/2020

Boy that 2002-2010 stretch they were making the playoffs a lot (helps to be in a super-weak division I guess), but just couldn't get too far. Guess Mauer will be the big representative of that era, along with Justin Morneau. Francisco Liriano was a big deal at first, but boy did his career fall apart fast (even faster than I remembered). Torii Hunter also catches me as a team HOF guy. Not many catching my eye, but I'm not a fan of the Twins so I'm not the right person to be digging into it I guess. Still interesting to try to think of who a team should put into their own HOF.

11. Can the Dodgers retire his # also? Be really good if the Dodgers retired Rick Honeycutt's nickname at the time "Honeygoltz"
