Things did not go well for the Cleveland Guardians on Monday night, but David Fry still made history at Progressive Field.
The catcher and utility man threw four innings in the Guardians’ blowout 20-6 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Monday, which made him the first true position player to pitch four innings in a game since 1988. Jose Oquendo was the last position player to pitch more than three innings that season for the St. Louis Cardinals, though he took the mound in a marathon 19-inning game, per USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.
Fry allowed seven runs and 10 hits during his stint on the mound. All 64 of his pitches were slower than 60 miles per hour, which set another Major League Baseball record. No pitcher in the pitch tracking era had ever thrown more than 30 such pitches in a single game.

1. DarrenTeams use 35 pitchers a year now, and they still feel the need to have position players cover innings.
Gotta keep all your real arms fresh. You just never know when you'll need to use 14 pitchers in a bullpen game.

Off the top of my head, I would have said that 4-IP relief stints had almost disappeared. In fact 2015 marked the all-time low, at least since 1901.
But after 2015 the number ticks up again. 215 in 2019 is not a huge number historically, especially that there are now 30 teams, but it was the highest since 1991. And this year, with a few weeks to go, is already the highest since 2015.
And obviously till David Fry those were all thrown by "true" pitchers. So it isn't like no pitcher is capable of 4 relief innings anymore.
Lucas Giolito is the first pitcher to allow 8+ runs in a game for 3 different MLB teams in the same season since Bill Magee did so in 1899 for the Louisville Colonels, Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Senators.
This could make things better or worse for Giolito, depending on why those runs are scoring. Either the fielders are futzing their plays, or Giolito is walking the ballpark. Or, since we're talking about eight runs, probably both.
