Guardians to promote outfielder-turned-reliever Anthony Gose

Olympic silver medalist and former outfielder Anthony Gose is being called up by the Cleveland Guardians. He won’t be roaming Progressive Field’s outfield any time soon, though — the 31-year-old will likely make his debut as a reliever.

Gose’s last MLB action came in 2016 as a member of the Tigers’ lineup. His already limited offensive contributions as a hitter were dwindling and he finished the year with a .209/.287/.341 slash and two home runs in 30 games. His career was just five years in but it already looked like it was winding down.

Gose began a new chapter as a pitcher in Detroit’s minor-league system in 2017 before finding his way over to Cleveland in 2019 after a few cuts, a failed Rule 5 selection, and a tiff with his minor-league manager. It’s been a steady ascension since then for the right-hander, going from High-A to Double-A in 2019 and playing all of 2021 in Triple-A.

To this point, the highlight of his pitching career has been pitching 5.1 innings for Team USA in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Gose, who has been noted as hitting 100 mph with his four-seamer, has been electric since returning stateside to the Triple-A Columbus Clippers on Aug. 15.

Very cool.

This is a minor point, but isn't the team name still the Indians right now, not the Guardians? It's weird to see articles already using a name that the team won't start using until next season.

I didn't even know they had reached a name change. I thought this article was about some bizarre Guardians of the Galaxy-MLB cross-over.

for the right-hander
Guess again...

I'm glad he's been able to work his way back to the majors but, as a position player, Gose had the worst understanding of how baseball works of any player I've ever seen. He was all but guaranteed to, at least once per game, to take a bad route, throw to the wrong base, make a blunder on the base paths, or just toss a baseball into the eye of a teammate. He was very possibly the toolsiest of tools goofs, with all the hope and disaster than encompasses.

Dave, I checked the guy's archive. He seems to have consistently called them Cleveland, not Indians, and then switched to Guardians immediately.

I thought this was the travel team from Colorado Springs.

This means that all 3 of the players traded for Roy Oswalt in 2010 are still in the majors. Who says the Phillies can’t develop players?
J A Happ and Johnathan Villar are the others in the trade.

So we're calling them the 2020 Olympics?

His karma is bigger than yours.

Huh. I remember Gose as a Blue Jay who seemed like, just maybe, he would turn out to be something. I lost him after he left Toronto. Didn't even know he was trying this.

Gose? Too sour.

They were called the 2020 Olympics throughout. Never changed the logo. It was kind of weird but hey, in a year of ghost runners and 7-inning doubleheaders it’s hard to notice the weird anymore.

The last time I remember Gose was when he played OF for the Tigers, and in a game in Toronto in 2015 he fielded a fly ball while running towards right-center field. He caught it, and slowed down and started to turn around with his head down and jog towards the diamond.

Ryan Goins was on second base and he tagged up, ran around third and scored for the rare two-base sac-fly.

It wasn't until Goins scored before Gose realized what was going on and that was only the second out, not the third.

Less than a year later, he had played his last game in the majors until tonight.

He's throwing 100 tonight.

Jack Clark doesn't understand why that's an issue.

In the same way,the European soccer championships scheduled for 2020 were also postponed because of the pandemic. They were played intead in the summer of 2021, but were still called UEFA Euro 2020.
