Hamels To Join Braves on One-Year Deal

Left-hander Cole Hamels signed a one-year, $18 million contract with the Atlanta Braves, the team announced Wednesday.

...

Hamels joins a Braves rotation fronted by Mike Soroka and including Max Fried and Mike Foltynewicz. Two other members of the Braves’ 2019 rotation are free agents—right-hander Julio Teheran, after Atlanta declined his 2020 option, and left-hander Dallas Keuchel.

The 2020 season will be Hamels’ age-36 season.

Seems like Keuchel coming back would really help that team too.

Sure, Keuchel returning would help too, but Hamels essentially replaces Keuchel. The final spot in the rotation will probably be an open competition (Newcomb, Wright, Wilson, Anderson, and others) unless they sign another guy.

Hamels was really good first half of the year until he got hurt - he probably would have been (should have been) an All-Star if he wasn't on the IL. He was significantly worse in the 2nd half, but there's a reason to think he rushed back and wasn't 100%; something similar happened in Texas and was the reasoning he gave when he was pretty damn good in Chicago last year.

So this definitely could work out pretty well, if he's healthy. Of course, now that he's older and has been hurt more regularly, the odds of him being 100% all year aren't great.

I think this is a really good signing. The return could be terrific and the risk is minimal. For 1 year/$18 mil, they could get 170 innings at 110 ERA+, sounds good to me. If he stinks, who cares, the commitment and the money is minimal.

I think 1 year deals are almost always good ideas... There isn't a team in MLB that cannot afford to have a single year deal go bad.

They're only bad ideas when you count on those one year deals to do more than is reasonable - and it sounds like the Braves are just looking for Hamels to fill a backend rotation slot...

I guess we can start concluding that JD is not coming back to the Braves

Seems perfectly sensible, maybe a smidgen rich. I just wish the Cubs could manage to scrape together the financial resources for this sort of thing. Oh well, the travails of being a fan of a mid-market team.

Yep, Cub management are dining out on that lone title. They probably figure they've got at least 10 years before the fans start complaining.

At least the Red Sox won a few titles before they made the public announcement about going cheap, a much more respectable direction.....

As a Phillies fan, this one stings. Was hoping they'd get him, and at this price, it's perfectly within the budget.

That's always been the most likely outcome, but I don't think the Hamels signing precludes it.

The Braves have, allegedly, been in on Madison Bumgarner. I much, much prefer one year and $18 million for Hamels to (again, allegedly) four years and $100+ million for Bumgarner.
