Happy Birthday, Bill James!

image

Bill James is probably the most widely known purveyor of what is known as “Sabermetrics”. He is also often cited by researchers in discussions, but often without them knowing the exact citation. He would often publish studies, especially in the Abstracts, which would not be easily located. This is the beginning of an attempt to gather that information (the location of the various studies) and put it in one place.

Doing a complete indexing of the Abstracts and other books by Bill James is a lengthy and tedious project which is just getting under way. So I have started with overviews of the books that I have, which are essentially the Table of Contents, sometimes with a little extra information.

I have also listed the articles that he wrote in the Baseball Analyst Newsletter, which he published, and those that I know about in other books, newspapaers and magazines. I know there are many more magazine articles and I would appreciate any citations that anyone can add.

That index has actually been around for some time.

This will just encourage the man never to index anything ever again.

I kid because I love. Happy Birthday, Bill James!

BTW, without Bill, I wouldn't be here. Not sure where online I'd be shirking work. Maybe Comics Curmudgeon.

I know...but I couldn't decide between Gary Kroll or Joachim Kroll on who to link to.

Nor would any of us, arguably. I think the ideas Bill represented would have come into baseball--technology is as much responsible for that as Bill--but I don't think BBTF in this form would exist. Which is pretty weird when you think about it, because (either wholly or in part) I've attended a soccer game, gone to Australia, had a one-night stand, and been a guest at a wedding because of Primates.

That's some list.

[This reminds me of James' discussion of Ruth v. Hornsby...]
I dunno - James played a huge role in my getting to this point (such as it is), but it might have happened anyway.

Will Craig's mom jokes be the new Craig's wife jokes?
Dunno, let me check...

[rolls back]
Yes.

How do you thank someone who's taken you from crayons to perfume?
