Henderson quietly tried to lure Arizona Diamondbacks to Southern Nevada

Henderson has its eye on the big leagues.

Last year, Henderson officials quietly began a push to lure the Arizona Diamondbacks from the team’s Phoenix home to their city, records obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal show. Although discussions have stalled, the move signals Henderson’s desire to grow as a professional sports-caliber city.

“While a proposal for an Arizona Diamondbacks ballpark has not moved forward, the city of Henderson would welcome conversations with other major league franchises that may be considering a move to a different market,” the city said in a statement this week.

In a subsequent email, the city clarified it would be open to talking with any professional sports team looking to relocate.

For those of you wondering how the stadium shakedown racket somehow still lasts after a chorus of commentators (across the economic spectrum) have noted that it is a terrible idea….

There have been loads of comments here that the “threat of teams moving” is a false flag operation and cities shouldn’t pony up. The reality is that it only takes one city to express interest. Arizona will relent and give the d-backs what they want. Montreal is trying g to get the Rays. North Carolina would like a team, Vegas would like a team. I’m sure Mexico City would like a team.

Disappointed that this isn't about Rickey trying to entice a team to move to Vegas and hire him as player-manager.

A stadium might not actually "rejuvenate the area" like claimed, but I imagine having a sports teams brings in a lot of revenue for the city and state in the form of taxes, including on millionaire player and exec salaries, and billionaire owner income stream(s). There has to be a reason all these places are falling over each other trying to get these professional teams. If paying for a stadium is the cost of doing business then you do so and create the justifications afterwards ("Yes, Joe Taxpayer, this actually helps you! It doesn't just increase the government's revenues!").

That reason being local small-time politicians love those photo ops with famous sports team owners and access thereto, and they love building monuments to themselves.

You're not the only one who went in that direction.

Politicians don't mind spending other people's money.

Especially when they get to skim a little off the top.

I live about 1,000 feet from the proposed stadium location. This area does not need rejuvenation. It's doing just fine. Every time I leave for a few months, I come back and find multiple new housing developments and shopping centers.

I'd welcome a team within walking distance, as long as I don't have to pay for it.

Ohhh Henderson is a place... Got it

Come on. Rickey don't use Rickey's surname when Rickey refers to Rickey in the third person.

Yeah, I was hoping against hope that Rickey! was trying to relocate to Diamondbacks to his ranch and I was going to get completely on board that train

North Carolina would like a team
FWIW, there's next to nothing being done to make this happen. MLB Raleigh exists, but has close to zero local footprint. Charlotte led the minors in attendance last year and is doing so again this year, but that's led to nothing more than a couple of newspaper articles.

The municipality of Henderson should vote to deed all of its lands to Rickey.

MLB will not rest until every Primate is able to stroll (or be wheeled) to a modern, climate-controlled ballpark.

Maybe start by just letting everyone stream the games.

No, I think that the comments here are more to the effect that even if it's legit the cities still shouldn't pony up.

And having never heard of Henderson, Nevada, I, too, thought that this was an article about Rickey!

I don't remember Rickey doing anything quietly.

OK then, Plan C: Henderson, North Carolina

Or Rickey, Alablama -- conveniently located right off I-20, 2 churches, 1 restaurant.

EDIT: And given MLB's current top potential new revenue stream, we can appropriately put the stadium right on Gamble Rd.
