HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!
Without Albert Pujols, who is reportedly being released today.

Just heard that. Both shocking and not shocking, if you know what I mean.

I assume he's done. 3253 hits, 667 HR, 99.4 WAR.
   5. Infinite Yost (Voxter) Posted: May 06, 2021 at 01:59 PM (#6017312)
He had to have been over 100 WAR at some point, right?

After 2019 he was at exactly 100. Career high would have been 101.3 after 2016.

3 hits right. The Red Sox broadcast team talked about it. Regardless of what he is currently doing he is still an inner circle Hall of Famer and it comes as a surprise.

According to source, #Angels slugger Albert Pujols was upset that he wasn't in lineup to face #Rays bulk LHP Ryan Yarbrough last night, and that the decision to bench him came from front office, not MGR Joe Maddon. Pujols was 6 for 9 with 2 HR, 2 2Bs, 7 RBIs vs. Yarbough.

brother ...

john gant, flirting with danger all day, loads the bases with one out, gets the second out on a gutsy K, then the next batter hits it a mile but justin williams reaches over the fence to rob the mets.

on replay, i see it was going to be a foul ball by about a foot, but it's still a great catch to end the inning.

sad to see what has happened to ol' albert ...

gant putting himself in danger all over again ... pitching batting practice to the mets.

I don't think Francisco Lindor will ever get another hit.

So the front office intervened to force... Phil Gosselin into the lineup?

As I posted in the Albert thread, there will be pressure in STL to bring back Albert for a final farewell. Maybe September when rosters expand. I’m torn. His visit here in 2019 was wonderful and it was a great farewell. Albert sitting on the bench for a month and getting inconsequential PH appearances doesn’t seem like a great way to go. But the fans would love it.
   17. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 06, 2021 at 02:59 PM (#6017340)
The Cardinals could have a ceremony honoring Pujols, perhaps even retiring his number, without activating him.

seeing pujols in a cardinals uniform one last time would be a very odd experience ...

HOW OLD IS TONY LA RUSSA?
HE'S SO OLD THAT HE REMEMBERS WHEN ALBERT PUJOLS WAS GOOD AT BASEBALL

Mark Feinsand
@Feinsand
The White Sox feel like the perfect landing spot for Albert Pujols, who played for Tony La Russa from 2001-11 in St. Louis. Luis Robert's injury has opened a spot for a bat in Chicago.

Which of Pujols, Abreu and Mercedes is going to play CF?
   25. phredbird Posted: May 06, 2021 at 03:12 PM (#6017353)

oh for corn's sake ...

cardinal pitchers unable to find the strike zone, four straight walks after a hit, and now the mets have the lead.

i'm gonna go do something else for a while instead of this torture.
   26. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 06, 2021 at 03:22 PM (#6017361)
On today’s Yankees broadcast, it was noted that this is the first season in MLB history with no team with a .600 winning percentage after 30 games. #parity.
   27. JJ1986 Posted: May 06, 2021 at 03:26 PM (#6017364)
No team is over .600, but 4 teams were 18-12.

Live by the shift; die by the shift. Gleyber Torres was on 1st when Aaron Hicks, batting left-handed, hits an up-the-middle single that is knocked down by the SS. With no one covering 3rd, Gleyber keeps going, causing the catcher to try to cover the base, but Gleyber not only beats him to the bag, but then scores ahead of the now retreating catcher as no one covers home. Pitcher was a spectator for all of the action. Might be the first time someone scored from 1st on an infield hit without a throw even.
   30. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 06, 2021 at 04:12 PM (#6017385)
Here's that Torres play. O'Neill says he's never seen anything like it before.
   31. Hombre Brotani Posted: May 06, 2021 at 04:30 PM (#6017391)
The 11th walk by the Cardinal pitching staff forces in a run. 11 walks!

The Mets have had 11 walks and 7 hits, and just 3 runs.

EDIT: Make that 11 walks, 8 hits, and 4 runs.
   32. Tom Nawrocki Posted: May 06, 2021 at 04:45 PM (#6017393)
Who was it that was just complaining about Gleyber not hustling?
   33. The Duke Posted: May 06, 2021 at 04:55 PM (#6017397)
Mets have left 17 on base today but will win
   34. JJ1986 Posted: May 06, 2021 at 05:02 PM (#6017401)
Diaz is about to blow it. 2 soft singles bring up the heart of the Cardinals order.
   35. JJ1986 Posted: May 06, 2021 at 05:03 PM (#6017402)
And now an error.

[\reverse jinx successful]
   36. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2021 at 07:20 PM (#6017436)
The Mets offense is a mess, how in the hell do they only score 4 runs today? and heck 3 of them were scored by walks. You get 11 walks, 8 hits, that is a 9 run game at the minimum.
   37. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 06, 2021 at 08:12 PM (#6017444)
YES. Say Hey is the oldest living HOFer.

Well unless Ruth is rising from the dead, Mays has been the best living HOF since he was elected as he is the 2nd best player ever.

Of course when he was elected 23! voters didn't put him on their ballot. That is some f*cked up sh*t.
   38. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 06, 2021 at 08:36 PM (#6017450)
That Torres play in the link on #30 is brilliant. Total little league stuff. Should the pitcher had moved towards home to cover when the catcher headed to 3rd? Wonderfully odd stuff. It's why we love this game. Sometimes you see stuff you've never seen before.
   39. salvomania Posted: May 06, 2021 at 10:02 PM (#6017460)
Just checked out the Angels-Rays game, and there have been 8 outs so far, and 8 strikeouts.

EDIT: Make that 9 and 9.
   40. salvomania Posted: May 06, 2021 at 10:11 PM (#6017463)
OK, Jared Walsh grounded out, so we're at 11 of 12 outs via the K so far.
   41. Hombre Brotani Posted: May 06, 2021 at 10:16 PM (#6017465)
What's the record for most outs-by-strikeout by both teams to start a game?
   42. salvomania Posted: May 06, 2021 at 10:28 PM (#6017467)
Seems weird to see Colin McHugh lifted after two, with 5 K's and zero baserunners allowed.

I guess that's the Rays for you...

EDIT: Not working out so well for the Rays, back-to-back doubles against Josh Fleming break the scoreless tie..
   43. Hombre Brotani Posted: May 06, 2021 at 10:30 PM (#6017469)
Looks a lot worse after Fleming gives up back-to-back doubles. I'm sure the Angels will find a way to screw this lead up.
   44. Hombre Brotani Posted: May 06, 2021 at 10:32 PM (#6017470)
Shohei Brotani homers. #10. It's gonna make a crater when it lands.

"The Mets offense is a mess, how in the hell do they only score 4 runs today? and heck 3 of them were scored by walks. You get 11 walks, 8 hits, that is a 9 run game at the minimum."

Well they were all singles. The formula, I have always heard, for estimating expected runs is TB X number of base runners/plate appearances. In this case 9X20/48=3.75
   46. Hombre Brotani Posted: May 06, 2021 at 10:59 PM (#6017481)
Angels starters have given up zero earned runs over their last 15 innings.
Angels relievers have given up 10 earned in their last 12 IP.

What's the record for most outs-by-strikeout by both teams to start a game?

announcers just said that the 9 in TB-LAAofA tonight was the 5th time it has happened in the 60-year expansion era.

4 of the 5 have involved the young-franchise Rays because......
"opener," maybe?
dunno
   48. Hombre Brotani Posted: May 06, 2021 at 11:39 PM (#6017486)
That makes sense that the Three True Outcome organization would be involved in many of those games.

With Tsutsugo playing first, I wonder if this is the first time Ohtani has been able to have a chat in Japanese after reaching first base in the US.

Edit: looking it up, seems to be true.
