This year’s group of recipients included 10 first-time winners. The Padres led all clubs with three winners – all three of whom came over to San Diego at the Trade Deadline – while the Cardinals, Dodgers and Phillies each had two on the National League side. As for the American League, nine teams were represented among the 10 recipients, with the Astros being the only AL team with multiple winners.

1. Cooper Nielson Posted: November 10, 2022 at 08:56 PM (#6105075)NL OF - Juan Soto, .242/.401/452, 149 OPS+, 27 HR, 62 RBI
NL DH - Josh Bell, .266/.362/.422, 128 OPS+, 27 HR, 88 RBI
NL UT - Brandon Drury, .263/.320/.492, 122 OPS+, 28 HR, 87 RBI
I haven't bothered to check to see who was more deserving (NL outfield is pretty weak these days so Soto was probably still top 3 even in a bad-for-him season), but these guys seem kinda meh.
That played a big role in [Soto's] ridiculous .401 on-base percentage.
.401 is ridiculous now? It's the lowest OBP of Soto's career and was 6th in MLB this year.
Machado also had a pretty good argument for the 3b slugger.
Machado .298/.366/.531/.898 159 ops+ 32hr
Arenado .293/.358/.533/.891 154 ops+ 30hr
Mostly accurate, the hr and rbi are from the wrong season though should be 17 hr 71 rbi.
Pujols .270/.345/.550/.895 154 ops+ 24 hr, 68 rbi in 300 fewer plate appearances, so I get it, but still a bit surprised.
Sadly that the DH finalists were pretty crappy in one way or another
(Josh Bell (SD)
Albert Pujols (STL)
Luke Voit (WSH)
Justin Turner (LAD)
Charlie Blackmon (COL)
Bryce Harper (PHI)* (not eligible because of games, but a finalists nonetheless)
Ah yeah, sorry, looked at the wrong line. Thanks for the correction. So Bell was even worse than I thought. I agree with you that Pujols would have been a better (and more fun) choice.
Drury's fine at "UT," I guess -- not sure how they even define that position. He put in significant time at three positions and hit well enough.
Soto: 159 OPS+ (WSN), 130 OPS+ (SDP)
Bell: 153 OPS+ (WSN), 75 OPS+ (SDP)
Drury: 128 OPS+ (CIN), 109 OPS+ (SDP)

Soto was 5th in the NL in OPS+ and first among outfielders. He was 8th in Runs Created and 2nd among outfielders. It was a down year for him and the triple crown stats look meh, but the next best candidate after the three winners was probably Brandon Nimmo (151 G, 130 OPS+, .274 AVG, 16 HR, 64 RBI, 102 R) who looks just as meh from that standpoint.
