Here is Mets’ preliminary list of managerial candidates

To be clear, this is not the list of people who the Mets have contacted or will definitely interview; it’s the list of people in whom the Mets have some level of preliminary interest:

Houston Astros bench coach Joe Espada

Veteran manager Buck Showalter

Tampa Bay bench coach Matt Quatraro

Pittsburgh bench coach Don Kelly

Former Tigers and Angels manager Brad Ausmus

Before interviews take place, it is impossible to label a frontrunner. Having said that, it does feel like there’s early buzz surrounding Espada. In addition to his history with Eppler in the Yankees organization, Espada has been at the center of what the Astros have accomplished under Dusty Baker over the past two seasons.

Of interest to some in the BBTF community?

If I’m the Mets, I don’t want to take any more chances on someone’s first managing job. Ink Showalter or Bochy and be done with it.

I feel the exact opposite. Same ol' same ol' would be annoying. I'd rather they give it to Walt than the Boomers.

Love Curtis, but it appears that he's done a "thanks, but no thanks."

Why would anyone want Ausmus? Other than someone rooting for failure.

Love Buck. Always have.

Wonder if Backman's name would come up. Certainly, Alderson would never consider it but maybe the maverick owner might.

What are the goals of the Mets? Are they in a win-now mentality with Jacob and Scherzer or are they trying to build a better culture for long term success? I would prefer the latter, and if that was the case I'd be happy with a young manager. It might sacrafice a few wins in the short term, but the lockeroom seems a bit of a mess and needs to be redone from the ground up.

Of course, they did just sign Scherzer, so I'm guessing they'll go with established veteran and make a run at the wild card next year. Woo hoo

The point of the short-term spending on Scherzer and the others is to compete now while giving the farm system time to replenish and start producing. So both.

Why can’t Cohen manage ? Turner did. Others have. How hard can this be? The cardinals fired Shildt because they didn’t like the cut of his jib - it can’t require much skill if you can hire and fire based on personality.

It seems if you are going to be dysfunctional - you should own it 100%
   9. Walt Davis Posted: December 06, 2021 at 04:08 PM (#6056419)
I'd rather they give it to Walt than the Boomers.

I appreciate the vote of confidence. But I don't believe I could fulfill the role of manager while working from home so I will have to join Curtis in saying thanks but no thanks.

Translation: after getting burned by Cohen in the GM search, there's no way I'm joining the Mets.

EDIT: And I hate to burst your bubble Lassus but I am a Boomer.

Re: #11, Do you think Brad Ausmus is too sexy for his jersey? (from 2013)

Obligatory disclosure: Ausmus and his wife Liz have been married since 1995 and are the parents of two daughters.

@ragazzoreport
Sources: Mets ace pitcher Max Scherzer has made it known that he prefers Buck Showalter to be the team’s next manager
