You're not going to get this kind of brave, straight talk from anyone else, but Devers is pretty good right now. Pretty good.

Ian Browne @IanMBrowne
Sale came into today with a run-support average of 3.7. Price is 5.94, Porcello is 5.6 and E-Rod is a ridiculous 8.3.

The YouTube broadcasts are such a ####### disgrace.

I wouldn't know. I get the same "Video unavailable" blank slate for this game that I get on most other YouTube videos these days. I've tried all their suggested remedies, so I guess they don't want people coming to their site to watch videos any more. No discount on my MLB.tv subscription, either.

Commendable timing on everything to both MLB and YouTube geniuses!

Max Muncy said Héctor Neris screamed “Fuck you!” toward the Dodgers’ dugout after the last out. “He’s blown about eight saves against us over the last two years,” Muncy said. “I guess he was finally excited he got one.”

Well, if this is the strike zone for the Yankees-Rays game, call it now, because it's over. Ridiculous.

That's being kind. First Gardner gets called out on a ball that was 3" inside, and then the first pitch to LeMahieu was half a foot outside and gets called a strike, in an obvious retaliation for Gardiner's complaint about the previous call.

####### "personalized" strike zones. Those robo-umps can't come along a day too soon.
   16. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 18, 2019 at 06:27 PM (#5863059)
Domingo German gave up HRs to the first two batters in the game, but the Yankees have come back to take a 5-2 lead. With the game tied 2-2, 3 runs scored in the 5th, before the Rays even warmed anyone up. Strange decision, probably influenced by today being a doubleheader and/or using too many openers of late. German looking pretty good now.
   17. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: July 18, 2019 at 06:42 PM (#5863060)
In the last 3 years, Judge has had 197 pitches called strikes that were below his knees.
   18. Bote Man Posted: July 18, 2019 at 08:15 PM (#5863071)
Silver Slugger winner Stephen Strasburg spanks a ground ball into CF for a solid base hit to lead off the T3 in Atlanta, then Trea Turner strikes out, then Adam Eaton triples to score Strasburg all the way from 1B when Acuña dives and misses the catch in LF. Both Stras and Eaton were laughing their a$$es off at the ridiculousness of the whole mess.

Then Tony Two-Bags hits a fly ball that caroms off the CF wall for a double as noted Nats killer Inciarte himself caroms off the wall missing the catch. Now 2-1 Nats in this important game.
   19. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 18, 2019 at 08:33 PM (#5863074)
Strasburg also homered IN THE SAME INNING, as the Nationals put a respectable 8 runs on the board in the 3rd. Hopefully, all that running won’t tucker him out too much to tend to his mound duties.
   20. Bote Man Posted: July 18, 2019 at 08:33 PM (#5863076)
UPDATE: Silver Slugger winner Stephen Strasburg comes to bat a 2nd time in the T3 inning, hits a 3-run circuit clout off Touki. Stras with 2 hits in 1 inning. 8-1 Nats in Atlanta.

How does this even happen? He caught the ball and then ran really fast down to first base to double off a runner?

Martinez of the Cards is such a dounterintuitive guy. Lean 6'6" you think this guy has power and speed probably good on defense. None of that. So weird

It was a liner where the base runner was running on the play. I assume what you say just finished off the play.
   25. Howie Menckel Posted: July 18, 2019 at 09:05 PM (#5863086)
Elmer Smith had SIX of them

(no one ever seems to "hit and run" anymore, but it used to a staple of the game)

"Baseball's record books are at variance on the record for unassisted double plays by an outfielder. One credits Tris Speaker with four for his career and shows him as the American League record-holder and sharing the major league record with Elmer Smith, while another book lists Speaker with six. Tris did, in fact, turn six unassisted DPs as an outfielder and owns the distinction of making two in one season twice - and with different teams at that.

The two record books agree that Speaker had unassisted double plays for the Boston Red Sox in 1909 and 1914 and two for Cleveland (April 18 and 29, 1918). But he actually made four for the Red Sox one in 1909, another in 1910 which long was overlooked and two in 1914, the second of which also went undetected for years.

Speaker performed his 1910 unassisted DP on April 23 in the second inning of a game at Boston against the Philadelphia Athletics. With one down Harry Davis was hit by a pitched ball and promptly stole second. Danny Murphy hit a low drive to center, and Speaker snared the ball and continued on to second for an easy double play as Davis had taken off with the crack of the bat. The A's, however, went on to win the game, 5-3 in 11 innings, with Eddie Plank the winner over Eddie Cicotte, both hurlers going all the way."

Stephen Strasburg is the 5th pitcher in the last 50 seasons to get 2 hits in an inning including a HR.

He's the 1st since Edwin Jackson on April 11, 2010.

Strasburg is also the first pitcher in "franchise" history with two hits in one inning.

Puig takes an obvious swing, first base ump calls it and Puig throws up his arms as if to say wtf and the ump immediately comes at him with the same gesture. Puig then does a lame swing on the next pitch and yells at the first base ump on way to the dugout and ump just ignores him. This is the stuff where the umps doesn't get the credit because Puig was begging for a reaction and the umpire was like whatever dude

Going into tonight's game, onetime A's regular second baseman Jurickson Profar was slashing a robust .264/.323/.484 since surpassing the Mendoza Line for good on June 5 - and, even more impressively, with just one error committed during that time.
Tonight, Profar hit a bomb to bust open a taut 1-1 game in Minnesota, A's now leading 3-1 in the 6th inning.

numerous sea gulls now circling the empty upper deck in SF, so Mets broadcast naturally sends their 'field' guy to try and feed them. no luck so far.

the quality of the team vs the broadcast reminds me of those sitcoms (all of them) where the male star always has a wife who he couldn't get near in real life. quite the mismatch.

Meh. Can't get too upset about losing that one last night. Games like that -- games of attrition -- greatly favor the home team. Y'know, last licks & all. Also, when it got down to a bullpen battle, the Giants' 'pen is so far superior to the Mets', I'm shocked it got to 16, tbh.

Mets could have taken the lead in the 10th, though (they had 2nd & 3rd no out, then bases loaded, 1 out and didn't score) and that's a little bit galling...

Red Sox trail 8-2
Rays trail White Sox 8-2

Hmmm

Through 7 innings, Yankee pitchers have struck out 14 Rox.

That is kinda their job description..it's the ####### ####### umps who react to this #### that is the reason people want robo umps, and criteria for them to keep their jobs... ultimately the are supposed to be the whipping boys and not say ####... the fact that some ######## umps think they are "part of the game" has been an issue for 40 years.... they aren't, just do you job and stay out of everything and don't escalate ####... that is your job, you are paid 6 figures to do that, so accept it and move on.

Step on their necks when they're down.

Here's the difference:

Vs. AL East:
Yanks 34-11
Rays 23-21
Red Sox 22-21 (unless they come back tonight)

Yankees ended up K'ing 17 Rox.

"Victory" Robles smashes a 2-run circuit clout that drives in Ryan Zimmerman to tie the game down their last out. 3-3 going to B9 in Atlanta.

7 K through 4 scoreless for deGrom, so the Mets lead.....

I'm just kidding. of course it's 0-0

Gary, Keith, Jacob on ESPN+ tonight. It's a good Friday evening...

"There's no money in the air here." - Keith Hernandez just now about what is currently known as Oracle Park in SF.

Maybe all MLB games should be played at whatever the **** the park on the Bay is called in SF. Such, such more enjoyable to watch.

10 K through 6 scoreless for deGrom, so the Mets lead.....

.........

Mets, having played a 16-inning game vs Giants tonight, had just the game plan to handle the Giants rookie tonight:

Matt Ehalt
‏Verified account @MattEhalt

Mets pitches per PA tonight:
2, 1, 4, 5, 3, 2, 4, 2, 1, 4, 4, 3, 1, 2, 3, 4, 3, 5, 1, 1, 4.

........

[one of the 5-pitch ABs was deGrom]

Obviously deGrom going to the Astros would swing, so to speak, the entire outcome come November (or whenever the Hell this season ends), but watching him pitch for a team under .500 has been great fun. I hope he's getting at least a bit of enjoyment from it all.

Keith knows Warren Spahn was traded in '65 to the Giants because of playing Strat-o-Matic. Can it get any better?

Mike Leake’s game is just like the 1985 Jamie Lee Curtis/John Travolta film about health clubs: Perfect.

Perfect through 8

Only at 76 pitches, too.

The cumulative jinxing effect of posts 80-84 was too much for Leake. I blame Howie for not interspersing a wry observation about the Mets.

hit to lead off the 9th

Jordan Zimmermann now 0-9 in his last 16 Tigers starts

good thing he only makes...... (looks it up).... $25M this year and next year.

that 35 ERA+ entering tonight's loss has the Tigers - ok, it's not good.

in the 2-game series aggregate so far #crossthreadsoccer the Giants lead the Mets 2-1 in 25 innings as we again head to extra time

The Orioles are, at least temporarily, no longer the worst team in MLB:

Baltimore Orioles 30 - 66 .313
Detroit Tigers 29 - 64 .312

Congratulations to the extent warranted, you hapless tankers.
   92. Howie Menckel Posted: July 20, 2019 at 01:34 AM (#5863402)
Giants with 2 outs in 10th, still 0-0, runner on first.

lazy fly hit to 1B Dom Smith - who is pretending to be a LF - and Smith lets it land in front of him and then by him, barely.

Dickerson on first is running hard all the way (what a concept!), and Smith's relay and the second relay fail, so Giants win again.

the main takeaway is that the Giants are headed to another WS title in Bochy's final season - and the Yankees have to look elsewhere for a postseason ace (not that it matters, because of the first part of the sentence).

So, I'm in Winston-Salem house hunting and decided to go see a Dash game tomorrow night. Sitting front row just to the right field side of home plate for the grand sum of $14.99. They're playing Down East, which I didn't know was a thing until now.

Anybody got any insights into the White Sox system? Or the Rangers? Anybody I should be keeping an eye on in this game? Or should I just enjoy my hot dogs and not worry about it too much?
