“Hire ’Tek!”: Red Sox fans make pitch for Varitek as manager

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have a list of characteristics they want in their next manager, but they haven’t yet landed on a name.

Their fans have one in mind.

Three days after the Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora for his involvement in a cheating scandal, supporters pleaded for Boston’s front office to hire former catcher and team captain Jason Varitek at a town hall event Friday during the team’s winter festival.

Members of the team’s leadership group were hit with “Hire ’Tek!” chants throughout the night, and principal owner John Henry was interrupted several times by fans voicing their support. Henry paused and nodded in acknowledgement, and new chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom used the opportunity to appease the crowd.

Given how this week has gone so far, something tells me this could end up backfiring rather quickly…..

Am I right in my understanding that Varitek has precisely zero coaching and managerial experience?

If the Sox are certain that they're going to underachieve in 2020, a solid dastardly scheme would be to hire the local favorite under intense fan pressure in order to watch him fail spectacularly. Maybe by turning an 84 win team into a 75 win team. Then after the season blame everything on Varitek and blow it up, letting Mookie walk and trading away every high earner who isn't nailed down. Oh, and character assassinations, so many character assassinations. The fans can't be angry, they got their guy. Maybe now they'll learn to shut up and do what they're told! Larry Lucchino would be proud.

Yes, no experience. He is the "special assistant to general manager" but I don't think it's clear if he's there in a public-facing PR kind of way or if he's seriously being groomed for something. Either way, I can't help but think that if Varitek was seriously interested in being a manager, he'd be doing it in the minors or at least be a bench coach somewhere.

I don't know. Fetching coffee for the GM seems to be the best possible training for a managerial job, at least in the eyes of most GMs today.

I feel like this would make a great movie script...

Maybe add an extra plot point like moving the team to Miami.

Varitek’s lack of experience could easily be addressed by bringing in Bobby Valentine as his Bench Coach.

Are we sure they weren’t just saying the Sox should use more and better technology for their cheating?

I am a Yankees fan- I hope the Sox hire Varitek-

About time the Heathcliff Slocumb trade started biting Boston in the butt.

It strikes me that Varitek- if he wants to manage- should not want to be the guy who replaces Cora. He should want to be the guy who replaces the guy who replaces Cora...

Ah yes, the old adding "gasoline to the fire scheme" ....what could possibly go wrong?

Fernigal's proposal in #1 is pure genius though. I could see that becoming the "Loria scheme" over time.
