Hochman: Ozzie Smith, ‘82 Cardinals celebrate 40 years since World Series title | Benjamin Hochman | stltoday.com

That was definitely a fun team to watch.

“It was most of my most exciting and rewarding season,” said Kaat, 83, who was finally inducted into Cooperstown this summer. “I didn’t find this out until my career was over, but 17 years between World Series appearances is the longest period of time any player ever had to wait. And then, no player in any professional sport has had to play 24 years before getting a championship ring. Ray Bourque, the hockey player, was 22. But those aren’t records of accomplishment by me — they’re just an example of how honored I was to be a part of that team. And the fact that we were such an exciting team.”

What odd factoids. I mean obviously it's "of players who have appeared in two WS...." Ernie Banks (and many others) appeared in no WS; Barry Bonds appeared in one. Claudell Washington (and I assume others) appeared in the WS in his rookie season and never again. Bonds also played 22 seasons without a ring.

wait, I thought the milestone was "42 years" - as that was why the Phillies just celebrated their 1980 title team the other day.

What a weird series by today's standards. Mike Caldwell giving up 14 hits in game 5 and still being the winning pitcher is one of many things that just have no chance of happening now.

But Brewers totally blew it. Blew game 2 and then had Sutton going in game six with rest and Sutton was awful with chance to win series.

I remember game 6 having all kinds of rain delay issues. I was a kid (12) so I had to go to bed but I remember waking up and turning on the TV to see if the game was still going on at 7AM. Not sure if my memory is making #### up.

4--2 hour rain delay.

edit: another insane things. 13-1 blowout done in 2:21.

as that was why the Phillies just celebrated their 1980 title team the other day.

Obvously they should have celebrated that in 2020 given the record attendance.
