HOW WILL AN ANGEL WIN TODAY?!
   2. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 08:19 PM (#6028833)
Let's clonk some baseballs !
   3. JJ1986 Posted: July 12, 2021 at 08:21 PM (#6028834)
Not having to wait for the ball to land makes for horrible television.
   4. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 12, 2021 at 08:23 PM (#6028835)
Mancini's with a nice first round. Sleeper winner.
   5. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 08:26 PM (#6028836)
Let's go Matt-O !!
   6. JJ1986 Posted: July 12, 2021 at 08:30 PM (#6028837)
I did not realize there was a statcast edition broadcast. Time to switch.
   7. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 12, 2021 at 08:31 PM (#6028839)
Yep, ESPN2 has the StatCast crew.
   8. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 08:36 PM (#6028840)
Good show Mr. Olson of the Athletics. Little stoopid at the end, but it's about the fun of it !
   9. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 08:36 PM (#6028841)
I am going with the Gallo guy FTW.
   10. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 12, 2021 at 08:39 PM (#6028843)
Story up to 518. Good golly.
   11. JJ1986 Posted: July 12, 2021 at 08:40 PM (#6028845)
I want Alonso to win, but I do think Gallo isn't being mentioned enough as someone who should do really well.
   12. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 12, 2021 at 08:43 PM (#6028846)
I'm rooting for Ohtani, but I can't imagine anyone beating Gallo in a long-ball exhibition. That guy's basically Sasquatch.
   13. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 08:48 PM (#6028847)
Jesus, Gallo kept hitting into the shift.
   14. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 12, 2021 at 08:51 PM (#6028848)
Man, that Gallo round was disappointing.
   15. JJ1986 Posted: July 12, 2021 at 08:53 PM (#6028849)
This is more like it (I don't understand the bonus round rules. It says :30 earned for everyone, but then they get a minute).
   16. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 12, 2021 at 08:53 PM (#6028850)
Good bonus round for Gallo.
   17. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 08:53 PM (#6028851)
Good comeback though.
   18. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 08:54 PM (#6028852)
Taking Alonso now.
   19. JJ1986 Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:00 PM (#6028854)
Pete's gonna hit 50 in a round.
   20. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:06 PM (#6028855)
34!

Poor Salvy Perez.
   21. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:14 PM (#6028856)
Respect Mister Perez !
   22. JJ1986 Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:17 PM (#6028857)
Weird for Soto to have a left-handed pitcher.
   23. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:18 PM (#6028858)
Soto to 520!
   24. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:22 PM (#6028859)
Yeah, that lefty cost him like 7 homers.
   25. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:27 PM (#6028860)
Ohtani is like, what are you doing dude ? Just throw the ball, idiot !
   26. JJ1986 Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:28 PM (#6028861)
This is not good.
   27. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:28 PM (#6028862)
What the heck.
   28. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:33 PM (#6028864)
I love how his translator jumped out of his crouch, hands up, when Ohtani tied it up.
   29. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:34 PM (#6028865)
That was more than he could've hoped for @tie. Jesus.
   30. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:37 PM (#6028866)
This crap is over.
   31. Meatwad Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:37 PM (#6028867)
Alonso is a monster, also poor salvy, hits 28 and still loses
   32. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:39 PM (#6028868)
oops
   33. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:39 PM (#6028869)
Loving Ohtani + Soto. Mike Trout calling in for a pep talk is my new favorite thing in the world.
   34. JJ1986 Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:43 PM (#6028870)
If they tie again, Alonso gets a bye to the finals.
   35. JJ1986 Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:44 PM (#6028871)
NL: 3-0
AL: 1-4
   36. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:45 PM (#6028872)
I don't know, a little too much show around that Ohtani guy. I don't like it.
   37. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:46 PM (#6028873)
That was great. I hope the rest of the night is as good as Soto-Shohei.
   38. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:50 PM (#6028875)
If Alonso keeps it up, I will watch more Mets games.
   39. Voodoo Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:51 PM (#6028876)
Why did they match up Ohtani with Soto in the first round? I have no idea how they draw up the seeds but it seems like Soto should have been a higher seed than say Mancini or Salvy Perez (granted both of those guys did great).
   40. JJ1986 Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:53 PM (#6028877)
I don't know how they seeded it, but I probably would have had Soto 4th after Alonso, Gallo and Ohtani.
   41. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:57 PM (#6028878)
Hunter Pence chose Trey Mancini.
   42. sunday silence (again) Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:58 PM (#6028879)
Seeding was based on current HRs on the season at the time the contestants were announced.

There was a tie break based on last seasons HRs
   43. yo la tengo (the poor man's Ron Darling) Posted: July 12, 2021 at 09:59 PM (#6028880)
Why not use a pitching machine for this event? More consistency about pace and location.
   44. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 10:06 PM (#6028881)
I like the fact that they choose their pitchers. Enough robots already.
   45. yo la tengo (the poor man's Ron Darling) Posted: July 12, 2021 at 10:15 PM (#6028882)
I kind of like Alonso's chances here
   46. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 10:21 PM (#6028883)
Man, that Alonso swing is so easy crushed it gone away adios !
   47. JJ1986 Posted: July 12, 2021 at 10:21 PM (#6028884)
This isn't really fair.
   48. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 10:22 PM (#6028885)
Alonso should be a professional baseball player.
   49. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 10:22 PM (#6028886)
I really don't know why he earns little money in the dancing business.
   50. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 10:33 PM (#6028887)
Trey it !
   51. The_Ex Posted: July 12, 2021 at 10:33 PM (#6028888)
Ohtani's pitcher wasn't consistent enough.

I like the POV camera angle.
   52. Meatwad Posted: July 12, 2021 at 10:34 PM (#6028890)
This has been an exciting derby so far, Alonso has to be good to win it.
   53. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 12, 2021 at 10:37 PM (#6028891)
I'm all in on Trey Mancini, just for the story, but Alonso's such a beast.
   54. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 10:40 PM (#6028892)
With Alonso's swing, there is now way he will not win. Unless he gets HBP and has to take 1B or is walked intentionally.
   55. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 10:45 PM (#6028893)
Then he gets hit, like WTF.
   56. Itchy Row Posted: July 12, 2021 at 10:47 PM (#6028894)
The derby is more fun without Chris Berman yelling about it.
   57. JJ1986 Posted: July 12, 2021 at 10:47 PM (#6028895)
That was fun.
   58. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 12, 2021 at 10:48 PM (#6028896)
What an animal !

So there is such a thing as a TicTok star — and that qualifies you as a celebrity.

A lot in this world has passed me by.
   60. Tom Nawrocki Posted: July 13, 2021 at 12:03 AM (#6028901)
I got to go to the Derby tonight, so three cheers for the Woke Mob. I've never been to an All-Star Game, but I have to imagine the Derby is way more fun. Ohtani was very impressive but just took too long to get going.

Still, there's no way he was going to beat Pete Alonso tonight. Before his last round, as they were waiting to come back from a commercial, Alonso was standing at the plate singing along with "Don't Stop Believin.'"
   61. The Honorable Ardo Posted: July 13, 2021 at 01:07 AM (#6028902)
My only question: who has the stones to take down Alonso in 2022?

I got to go the year it was in CitiField and it was great...my only complaint was the downtime between batters...the Mets/MLB didn't really seem to know how to handle it and brought in some minor league style entertainment (dogs catching frisbees at 300 feet and things like that) which can be fun in a 6,000 seat stadium, but fell flat in a larger ballpark. The best part for me was actually BP before the game...hardest hits of the night were from Machado hitting lasers all over the field during BP, not during the derby.
   63. Random Transaction Generator Posted: July 13, 2021 at 12:18 PM (#6028936)
They showed a graphic of Alonso's pitcher's location, and every single one of his pitches was in this tight little grouping, right at the middle-middle quadrant (slightly above dead center). It was impressive, and probably how he was able to go 6-for-6 in the bonus round to win the title.

I was kind of wondering if this showing would convince Judge and Stanton to compete next year.
   65. Rally Posted: July 13, 2021 at 02:03 PM (#6028949)
Hard to see Stanton competing at this stage of his career. Too great a chance he pulls a muscle off a bone making so many swings in a short time.

He was so locked in, it was unbelievable. It seems like several times he hit five or six in a row.

It also shows how important the guy lobbing the ball in is. I wonder if the rules would allow someone to use a pitching machine. Alonso could probably do even better with the ball coming in at exactly the right location and speed.
