Hoskins’ HR called back by replay in stunner

Rhys Hoskins could not believe how quickly his fortunes turned.

He thought he hit a game-tying, three-run home run to right field with two outs in the ninth inning on Sunday night against the Mets at Citizens Bank Park. He thought he made up for a defensive gaffe that opened the floodgates in the eighth as the Phillies turned a two-run lead into a four-run deficit. But after Hoskins crossed home plate and celebrated the 100th home run of his career with his teammates in the Phillies’ dugout, the replay official in New York ruled that the ball had hit the top of the metal railing and ricocheted back onto the field.

Hoskins’ clutch milestone homer turned into a two-run double instead. Bryce Harper struck out swinging to end the game. The Phillies lost, 8-7.

“They had clear evidence to turn it over, and that’s what it was,” Hoskins said.

Looked like it cleared the clear plastic wall and hit the seats, but hard to tell for sure from this.

any time a review might be inconclusive, it's best to overturn the call on the field.

Two reasons baseball used to be better than football. You once never heard these phrases on a baseball broadcast:

"A flag is down."

"They're going to review it."

I know that there are plenty of fans who believe that Getting Every Call Precisely Right (instead of 99.5% of them) is worth the loss of drama and game continuity when every close play has to be ratified in the booth before we can cheer or groan. But when the replay doesn't even accomplish *that* (and it never will; it just shifts the controversy to a different level), then what, exactly, have we gained with these gadgets?

the Phillies need to put cheap red paint on that railing so that it will clearly chip when a long ball hits it; I THINK it hit the railing, but the blandness of the color of the railing and of the empty seats made it difficult to tell.

I'm 99% sure it went over the railing. I was able to freeze the video in a spot where the ball looks to be clearly behind the railing before coming back into the field of play. It looks like it hits the seats behind

I saw many different reviews, and to the "first eye" it absolutely looks like a homer.

but the most zoomed-in one I saw - and SNY had a lot of them - seemed to confirm not a homer.

but "clear and convincing evidence to overturn?" that's a high bar.

we have moved on, but I would hope that MLB provided a Zapruder-film-like shot of the one I saw.

or think I saw.

#6, I loathe instant replay. Though the call appeared, to me at least, correctly overturned in the end, I'd rather not have the option of instant replay and just get on with the game.

Sure there is the occasional egregious call that really shouldn't have been missed, but over the course of 162 games, I'd like to think most teams get a similar balance of good and bad calls...such is life and you move on.

This involves the pedantry of replay with the stupidity of park design. There should be a clear boundary separating gone and not gone. A gray rail ain't it. It would cost seats, but I'd prefer a deep divide. Fans shouldn't be able to reach over and it should be really hard for a ball that's gone to come back and it certainly shouldn't be able to without disappearing from view. Ugh.
