Heyman’s expert MLB free agency predictions for Ohtani, Bellinger and more

1. Shohei Ohtani
The elbow injury that will limit him to hitting in ’24 won’t prevent a record deal — although, true or not, some speculate he knows where he wants to go before even hearing every offer. The Dodgers are still seen as the favorite and they’re trying hard, but the Giants, Rangers, Cubs, Red Sox, Padres, Mets, Yankees, Mariners and incumbent Angels are linked to varying degrees, and the Dodgers can’t feel overly confident.

Expert 1: $535M, 11 years. Expert 2: $400M, 10 years (opt-out after 2024). Me: $600M, 10 years.

Rockies get Cal Quantrill from the Guardians for C Kody Huff. Cleveland DFA'd Quantrill earlier this week.
   8. Walt Davis Posted: November 17, 2023 at 01:31 PM (#6147459)
Quantrill is a great guy to pick up in a deal like that (unless Huff is a prospect of some kind). I stumbled back across him at some point this year and I hadn't realized how good he'd been prior to this year. This year is an odd year -- he got hurt and missed most of June-Aug. Not a good overall performance but (a) he gave up 14 runs in his last 2 starts before hitting the IL; (b) he gave up 11 runs when he came back for 2 starts before going back on the IL. He was at a solid 4.06 ERA before those first 2 terrible starts and put up a 2.76 ERA in Sept after the second IL stint. He doesn't seem able to strike guys out anymore which doesn't bode well but what do you expect from a deal like that -- and 2 years of control left. Shame for him he's going to Coors, seems like a bad place for a BIP pitcher.

   11. The Yankee Clapper Posted: November 17, 2023 at 06:29 PM (#6147498)
The Yankees have acknowledged that they need to add a couple of outfielders, preferably left handed hitting, so today they traded . . . left-handed hitting outfielder Jake Bauers. Bauers had some moments, but faded badly to finish at .203/.279/.493, so it actually makes sense to move him if they don’t think he can fill the role adequately. The Yanks got a couple of prospects that don’t need Rule 5 protection, so they could benefit down the road although there’s no 2024 help in the deal.

The Cardinals entered the offseason with the mantra "pitching, pitching, pitching". And they have been true to form cutting two pitchers from their 26 man roster to open up two additional spaces on top of the five they had already (flaherty, montgomery, wainwright, hicks, stratton).

I wonder how many teams have jettisoned seven pitchers from their 26 man roster without adding one back
   18. The Yankee Clapper Posted: November 17, 2023 at 10:43 PM (#6147514)
Mets non-tender Daniel Vogelbach. Even for a team said to have an ‘unlimited budget’, food inflation apparently made his presence at the post-game buffet too costly. On the bright side, they’ll now be able to afford Shohei Ohtani.

Nah, it's like that agent missed the news on the pitching injury. That might have been the deal he was looking at before then and the new deal might have some incentives/options/mechanisms that might get it to 10/$600. But surely no team is just going to assume that a guy with his second TJS is just gonna bounce right back as an elite pitcher.

The HOF ballot is mailed out and released Monday. I'm excited to see how this year plays out. We will need an omnichatter thread soon

I've been reading Jaffes series on the old-timers committee and I have to say the Bill White bio blew me away. As a Cards fan, I never thought much of him. Good player but HOF. His breaking of barriers in later life is impressive and in true Jackie Robinson fashion he wasn't just "black", he was excellent in both roles.

He'd be a good selection to go with Piniella who will surely get in since he missed by one last time. I'll be umhappy if Joe West gets in on the basis of not taking sick days.

From Nightengale on Fisher:

There’s a provision in the agreement called a 10-year flip tax, MLB executives told USA TODAY Sports, to prevent Fisher from using the relocation simply to increase the value of his team and immediately sell.
MLB gave Fisher about a $300 million break by not charging him a relocation fee, but if he turns around and tries to sell the team, he’s going to have to pay a stiff penalty.
The agreement, an executive told USA TODAY Sports, requires Fisher to retain the team until at least 2028 when they are scheduled to open in Las Vegas.
If Fisher sells before 2028, he will be taxed 20% of the purchase price, which will be split among owners.
If Fisher sells in 2029, he will be taxed 10%.
If he sells in 2030-2033, he will be taxed a decreasing amount each year.
He will be unable to sell the team without being taxed until 2034.
So if Fisher was thinking about pulling a fast one, there will be a price to pay.

Question on Japan signings. If a guy comes over for say 8/200 and has an opt out after year 3. Does the posting fee count on the whole 200? So if someone demands an opt out, the posting fee (pr a large part of it) is just lost money ?

I was about to post a rant about this being auction fever because there is no chance he could ever be worth anything close to $500M over next 11 years, but then I looked at his BB-Ref stats.

How is it possible the last three years he's had 14.3 WAR as a hitter, and 14.3 WAR as a pitcher? Is this real life?

I’m hearing the Cubs have talked to the Blue Jays about Bo Bichette, who would play 3B for the Cubs.

This was first hinted at by @KFidds yesterday and @jonmorosi mentioned the Cubs interest in Bichette last year.

Bichette is signed through 2025 and would cost big return.

"Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz has landed a spot in the Final Stage of PGA TOUR Champions Q-School.

The Cy Young Award-winning pitcher navigated the challenging Buckhorn Springs site in Valrico, Florida, to secure a T14 finish with a score of 71-73-74-71, finishing at 1-over 289 for the week. Smoltz's performance earned him one of just 18 spots available from Valrico into the Final Stage.

Smoltz hadn’t finished better than T54 in three prior appearances at First Stage of PGA TOUR Champions Q-School.

The 55-year-old former Atlanta Braves righthander will now shift his focus to TPC Scottsdale’s Champions course, where the Final Stage will take place from Dec. 5-8. Only five PGA TOUR Champions cards are up for grabs out of a field of approximately 80 players."

Matsuzaka was 26 his first year with the Red Sox.

Darvish was 25. Those might be your best bests. Just add up what they got plus the posting fee, which was a bigger part of the package back then.

Seems like all the recent superstar pitchers who came up through farm systems, who could have hit free agency in mid 20s, ended up signing extensions with their first teams. Like King Felix and Kershaw.

Sabathia, had he gone year to year, could have been a free agent after age 25, but he signed extensions that delayed his payday a bit. He still got a huge deal, signing with the Yankees for his age 28 season.

I think Greg Maddux was young

There is so much info on how Japanese pitchers translate now I have to think that he can get an 8-10 year deal (if he wants it, maybe with opt outs)

I'd be pretty comfortable signing him to an 8-10 year deal. Even if it's 10/200 plus posting, where else can you get a 25 year old star without giving up assets ?
   46. Mayor Blomberg Posted: November 25, 2023 at 07:57 PM (#6148194)
Maddux was 27 and had had only one Maqdduxian season, 1992, the year before FA. He made $4.2M his in 1992 in Chicago, $5.875M including a 500K signing bonus and 375K earned bonus in 1993 in Atlanta. His big salary jump came in 1998.

From Passan, on Ohtani:

Wow... that is a borderline franchise player for them, they will lose any goodwill they have developed over the past few years with that trade. I get it from an analytics point of view, following the Billy Beane model of not keeping players that the fans will care about to market the team, but that is just a bad way to run a business needing to build fans. All sports are marketed on the individuals, it takes decades to become "The Yankees" "The Red Sox" etc. Until then you need Babe Ruth, you need Ted Williams. (and to a lesser extent you need some type of running familiarity year to year that fans can buy a jersey with a name on it.)

That would be the most unexpected signing, and I would love it to death. Putting him in the same division as the Yankees and Red Sox so you know ESPN will constantly show their games, although the balanced schedule will hurt that a bit.

Outside of the Cardinals, the five teams I would love Ohtani to sign with the most would almost have to include Blue Jays (Orioles is another...after that I would need to think)

Following the starting pitching trade market this offseason - can someone explain to me why Tyler Glasnow is considered a valuable trade piece? I can understand holding out hope for someone like deGrom, who's been hurt a lot lately but has had healthy seasons in the past. Glasnow has never made it through a full season, and the years when he's come closest (2020 and 2023) have also been his least impressive on a rate basis. (He's also been pretty bad in the playoffs, which isn't a huge deal on its own, but his 45.2 playoff innings are actually a noteworthy fraction of his career total.)
   52. Howie Menckel Posted: December 02, 2023 at 03:21 PM (#6148880)
Mets seem to be signing a new scrub to a contract every day - and today it's.... Andre Scrubb !

very good in 20 relief appearances in 2020 (COVID season, and no Astro pitched in more than 23 games), and not good in 18 games in 2021. tossed 7 innings in the minors in 2022 and none last year.

6-4, 270-pound RHP who is about to turn age 29. a 3.32 career ERA in the minors. the usual solid K, low H, awful BB rate.

Ohtani reported to be down to 5 teams, with offers said to be over $500M and speculation he could hit or top $600M. At those prices, I wonder if any talented position players might start working on their pitching to boost their own value. Lots of guys also pitched through high school, and may still think that they’d be OK with some work.

The Glasnow case is easy. When he pitches, he's elite. Further, a lot of his missed time is the same issue which has now been fixed. It's the same reason Rodon got big money and DeGrom. He's got a top .1% arm.

Cardinal bloggers have been pushing for a Tyler O'Neil for Marco Gonzales trade.... look like that isn't going to happen (obviously that was a bit tongue in cheek because of the original trade, but still they did a decent argument for it)

Dodgers re-sign Joe Kelly:
Kelly’s new pact with the Dodgers will guarantee him $8MM . . . Los Angeles passed on a $9.5MM club option on the ACES client last month, instead buying Kelly out for $1MM and sending him into free agency.
So, the Dodgers risked losing Kelly to another team to save $500,000? Maybe they need every last dollar for their Ohtani pool, but that seems a bit tightfisted.

Rodon this offseason was coming off of back-to-back seasons in which pitched had more innings than Glasnow ever has; deGrom threw at least 140 innings every year from 2014-19 (and pitched a full season in 2020 as well). I understand he's good when healthy, but I'd like to see him have at least one full season before giving up full-season-ace assets for him in a trade and then paying him a full-season-ace salary.

(And of course, Rodon and deGrom both got hurt again this year, so invoking them does not make me optimistic about Glasnow's chances.)

You can't forget about that 1.5 mil savings on the salary cap, I'm sure that will factor in somewhere (I don't remember their status, but I think they have been over for several years, so that 1.5 mil savings might actually work out to 2.25mil savings..... or somewhere around there)

And they didn't risk anything, they let him go with a goal of signing someone for around that amount, it just happened to be the same guy.

BB-Ref has the Dodgers at $94.7M in 2024 guaranteed contracts, with an estimated $37.9M in arbitration salaries, and ~ $136.4M for a full roster. That leaves a lot of room before hitting even the initial $237M 2024 Competitive Balance Tax threshold, so it still seems a bit petty.
   64. NaOH Posted: December 04, 2023 at 01:27 AM (#6149109)
This time of year Spotrac or Roster Resource tend to give a better indication of where teams' payrolls will be. Those two have the Dodgers at $155M or so. Figure another $50M or so if the Dodgers get Ohtani. Then there's another the $15–20M each team is assessed for player benefits. Obviously Ohtani is a big if, but if so the team is already around $225M, though they can afford to get past that $237M threshold.

a little more blunt than we usually see:

"Tyler O’Neill’s status as a potential trade candidate isn’t exactly a well-kept secret. Heading into the winter, it’s been widely expected that the Cardinals would listen to trade offers on both O’Neill and fellow outfielder Dylan Carlson. Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak removed any doubt about the likelihood of an O’Neill trade in an appearance on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM from this week’s Winter Meetings.

“In the outfield, right now, if we were to play tomorrow it’d likely be [Lars Nootbaar], Tommy Edman and [Jordan Walker],” said Mozeliak. “Our fourth outfielder would be Dylan Carlson. … Tyler O’Neill is somebody that we are listening to on trades.”

This is such a weird transition - I'm sure there are other players who've done it, but moving up the defensive spectrum (particularly going from outfield to infield) at age 30 can't be a common occurrence. (Which isn't to say it's a bad idea; he seems to be able to field the position just fine.)

From this wikipedia article.

More recently, due in part to increasing numbers of strikeouts and use of infield shifts, teams have become increasingly willing to move players to more difficult positions (rightward along the spectrum).[10] Players such as Ryan McMahon, Max Muncy, Travis Shaw, and Mike Moustakas have transitioned, either permanently or temporarily, from third base to second base as part of a trend of physically larger athletes being placed at the latter position.[2]

Well that's something. Prospect hounds, anyone, are the prospects decent? It seems like Cora didn't really like Verdugo so a trade seemed imminent anyway.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are acquiring left-handed starter Marco Gonzales in a trade from the Atlanta Braves, sources tell ESPN. The Braves will send cash to the Pirates and receive a player to be named later.

.........

seems like Gonzales was just moved from SEA to ATL in the Kelenic deal as a salary dump for the Mariners to make room for ... somebody. now Braves split the baby, as it were, while Gonzales is better than most Pirates SP or at least could eat some innings.

A few deals tonight all really low key stuff. It does seem that Ohtani and Yamamoto need to land before anything happens. The Soto thing needs to get resolved as well.

I don't understand the Soto trade talks. San Diego is asking for 2x to 3x more from NYY than hes valued at. Only thing I can think is that Tanks have an extension. With Boras worked out which gives Preller leverage

Soto has very little surplus value for one year

It probably happens, but I was under the impression you were not allowed to negotiate an extension until the trade was actually completed?

Possible, but not sure that’s particularly likely. Despite the Yankees balking at the Padres initial asking price, there haven’t been any other teams reported to be offering similar talent, or even articles name-dropping specific teams, players & prospects. Despite his talents, the Soto market may be quite small. The Padres reportedly still plan to contend in 2024, so it’s highly unlikely they would deal Soto within their division unless there was an overwhelmingly offer, which seemingly eliminates the Dodgers & Giants. The Yankees have some pitching depth to spare, although they don’t seem inclined to part with either Michael King or Drew Thorpe, and should also be able to accommodate the Padres interest in adding a catcher. I suspect there’s room to get a deal done, even though it only takes one team willing to overpay to upset such plans.

and should also be able to accommodate the Padres interest in adding a catcher.

let's see

Yankees C 2023 OPS+/MLB career OPS+

Higashioka 85/76, age 33
Trevino 56/74, age 31
Rortvedt 28/36, age 25
Wells 97/97, age 23 (75 PA)

given Cashman's great reluctance to ever trade any prospect who can fog a mirror, I assume that takes Wells off the table.

the Padres already have Luis Campusano, age 24, coming off a 134 OPS+ in 174 PA. he has been injury-prone, but seemingly the former second-round pick will take the job and run with it in 2024.

SD also has a fellow named Gary Sanchez 113/109, age 30
and Austin Nola 30/96, age 33
and Brett Sullivan 48/48, age 29

the idea that catching chatter would move the needle even one inch in a Soto-to-Yankees package - I find that delightfully amusing.
   87. The Duke Posted: December 06, 2023 at 09:40 AM (#6149328)
It should just take one top100 prospect to get Soto. He's available next year for free. Having said that, the guy can add anywhere from 5-7WAR for you which is a lot of added value in a tough division

Indeed the Orioles and Kimbrel are close to a deal with the expectation he will be the closer if the deal gets to the finish line.

my prediction: Padres get more than 1 top 100 prospect for Soto (unless it's a top 20 or so)

When a trade of this magnitude (with a superstar in Soto and 4 or 5 other players) is being sorted out, many issues need to be resolved, including medicals. And when multiple pitchers are involved, those various injury histories need to be reviewed. It’s all part of the process.
   90. Adam Starblind Posted: December 06, 2023 at 11:23 AM (#6149350)
Chatter is that Yamamoto is going over $300 million, possibly eclipsing Cole as the highest paid pitcher ever.

That is in-effing-sane. I don't care how rich my team's owner is. If he signed off on that, I'd be more worried about his mental health than his finances.

also announced at the Winter Meetings:

"May 25 at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, N.Y., an exhibition game to herald the opening of a new Hall of Fame exhibit on the history of Black baseball.

John Odell, a Hall curator who died last summer, had hoped to someday stage a revival of the Negro Leagues’ East-West All-Star games. Now it will happen, replacing — for 2024, at least — the annual Cooperstown alumni game featuring former players from each major-league team.

The list of players joining C.C. Sabathia is staggering: Ian Desmond, Prince Fielder, Curtis Granderson, Ryan Howard, Adam Jones, Russell Martin [CQ], David Price, Justin and B.J. Upton, and Dontrelle Willis — among others — will suit up for managers Ken Griffey Jr. and Ozzie Smith.

The rosters offer a reminder of the recent impact of Black players, a source of talent Major League Baseball has struggled to revive. According to MLB, there were 59 Black players on Opening Day rosters in 2023, comprising just 6.3 percent of all players. That’s far from the peak of 19 percent in 1986, according to a study by Mark Armour from the Society of American Baseball Research."

Gary Sanchez is a free agent, and Nola & Sullivan had an OPS+ of 30 & 48, respectively, which would in my mind certainly explain the reporting that San Diego was looking for a catcher as part of a Soto trade. Catching may not be the most important aspect of that trade, but it’s one the Yankees could easily satisfy, with either Platinum Glove winner Jose Trevino, or Kyle Higashioka, whose OPS+ was greater than Nola & Sullivan combined.
   94. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: December 06, 2023 at 04:30 PM (#6149411)
So with Soto going to NY, does that mean Judge plays CF? Because there is no way that either Verdugo or Soto can play CF. Soto in Yankee stadium is going to rake, more than his normal amazing high level, I think he'll easily eclipse 40+ homers this year and will OPS+ over 165. As a Red Sox fan, this does not please me. However, Soto is really fun to watch so there is that.
   95. Howie Menckel Posted: December 06, 2023 at 04:35 PM (#6149414)
bizarre that mlb.com still has Sanchez on the 40-man roster for Padres - Nola, too, even though he was non-tendered. that's pretty sloppy on MLB's part. I was too naive !

a report yesterday has the Friars talking 1 yr, $6.8M for Sanchez for 2024.

but the latest rumors may vindicate Clapper after all - although at that point it becomes the Yankees that will be in need of a catcher. maybe the Padres can help - or is a Sanchez return looming?

;)

Latest from MLB Trade Rumors:
Curry reported on air that King, Thorpe, Brito, Vasquez and catcher Kyle Higashioka are all likely to be included in the trade . . . . The deal still isn’t quite across the finish line but could be wrapped up this afternoon.
That seems high for just one year of Soto, so perhaps there’s something brewing on an extension?

Kyle Higashioka turns 34 at the beginning of next season and has a career OBP of .254. I know the Padres want a catcher, but geez. I'd like this deal better for them if they left Higashioka out of it.

Campusano is a budding star, and it looks like the Yankees threw in Higgy for free.

he can't hit and he's old, but he's suitable backup for the Padres. I don't get it from the NYY perspective. lotta pressure on this kid Wells now - and while he has a very good pedigree and can hit, it's not clear he can handle being behind the dish in MLB. as it happens, Higgy would seem to have been an ideal caddie for him.
