Hours after becoming Mets new owner, Steve Cohen fires GM Brodie Van Wagenen, entire front office

New York Mets owner Steve Cohen is starting over.

The organization announced on Friday afternoon that it was parting ways with general manager Brodie Van Wagenen as well as the rest of the front office.

The group consists of special assistant to the general manager Omar Minaya; vice president and assistant general manager for scouting and player development Allard Baird; assistant general manager of systemic development Adam Guttridge; and executive director of player development Jared Banner.

BvW, Minaya and Baird -- what a track record of success!!

We will trade you Theo Epstein for Jeff McNeil. More seriously, it would seem a logical next challenge for Theo if he wants to keep GMing but it would require getting him out of his Cubs' contract.

After the way Omar Minaya fired Willie Randolph I can't help but think that this couldn't happen to a more deserving individual.

I am a bit surprised that Cohen re-hired Alderson. Sandy seems to be somewhat of darling despite having not really having much since leaving Oakland. I hope he's more of a figurehead than someone who is making a lot of decisions at this point.

You’re fired! Loser!

Kind of surprised that they fired Baird, not that I know much. Mets drafting and player development has been pretty good though. International scouting seems to be a real weakness for them, but that’s a problem that predates Baird.

If BvW et al. feel the need to self immolate after this, we have a thread available for that purpose. Then again, after getting fired, they might not be Mets fans anymore.

I've always been a little surprised that Baird never got another shot at a GM gig. He was a disaster in Kansas City, of course, but retreads are hardly unheard of in MLB, the Royals were an utter ########### of an organization back then at levels way above Baird and he's always been a very well-respected guy within the game.

Baird was around for some time with the Red Sox and got 3 rings with them. If you assume that the Red Sox are a pretty well run organization, I think it is reasonable to think he was doing something well.

#10 I'm not. My impression is that like it or not his rep in baseball is as a good evaluator of talent and not so good at the big picture.

I expect him to get another gig in the same general role he had with the Mets.

"Good evaluator of talent and not so good at the big picture" was certainly my impression of Baird.

Just don't touch the broadcast booth!

When Baird was GM of the Royals and traded Dye for Neifi, I fired off an angry email to Baird's email address. He called me at my desk during work a few days later. We had a nice talk and his point was that Dye was never signing a FA contract in KC. My point was that may be a bigger problem, but Neifi wasn't a good return.

While I thought it was a nice consumer relationship management effort (I did have a 1/4 season package at the time), there are probably better things he could have been doing with his time.

Such a good broadcasting team--and to think that it followed Fran Healy, who attributed everything on the baseball diamond to confidence or lack thereof. Even Wright and Reyes coming up didn't transform the Mets fan experience to thoroughly.

Like talking to the IT team to make sure he didn't have an email address accessible to every yahoo Royal fan, no slight intended RF.
