How and why Padres went after Manny Machado - The San Diego Union-Tribune

If the Padres were projected to lose money before signing Machado, they are either lying or terrible with budgets.

Asked last month whether that player and that time could align this offseason, Fowler seemed dubious. He was comfortable with an internal projection that the Padres’ financial losses this season would amount to about $8 million to $9 million “unless A.J. gets somebody we really, really think is a good idea.”

Why? - Manny Machado is good at baseball
How? - By offering him some of the $266mil in operating revenue per Forbes

Per Cot's with Manny the Padres are projected to pay $124.44mil in 2019 for the 40 man payroll or 47% of revenue.

Interesting that Forbes (2018) places the White Sox operating revenue exactly equal with the Padres operating revenue. The Padres receive revenue sharing money, the White Sox do not.

I believe there's a depreciation scam going on here.

Indeed, Forbes tries, but trying to get real financial data on baseball teams is like trying heat your home with meteor impacts. It might nominally be possible, but you're never going to make it happen.

Also, there are a lot of "legitimate" tax write-off's that don't actually create a cash loss. Real-estate depreciation is the classic.
