How Kobe Bryant is trying to bring the Mamba Mentality to baseball

If you’ve been paying attention to Kobe Bryant’s post-NBA career, he’s made it quite clear he’s not interested in just riding off into the sunset as a basketball great. He’s got his sights set much higher.

Heck, he’s already won an Emmy and an Oscar.

Now, he wants to transform the way athletes — particularly young ones — hone their craft. Even those outside of basketball. As strange as it might sound, even baseball players.

This week, Bryant’s Mamba Sports Venture Lab launched its first product. It’s called Mamba RISE. It’s a smartphone app that is part game, part mental exercise, the goal is to bring Bryant’s famous Mamba Mentality to other sports. Included in the launch of Mamba RISE are baseball, football and volleyball. A basketball version is coming later. No word on if it’ll be beta-tested by a certain youth basketball he made famous on Instagram.

Towards the end of this piece, the argument is made that Kobe Bryant could be the one to save baseball- there are things to be said about that idea, none of them positive…..

I generally like Bryant, and though it's not my way of being, I basically admire his competitive BOOM! spirit and, when he was on the court, his basketball acumen and IQ. He was ferocious, dominant, all encompassing, athletically gifted and mentally tough. Playing on a post-Shaq Bryant team, well, it was all about Bryant. You fit into him. This led to some awesome results, and some less than awesome results.

But he was one of the few guys who are THE MAN, and for whom you'd tune into a game because he's playing.

He also has a lot of wind.

Mamba mentality in baseball. Like Bryce? Is that the close fit? It's certainly not Trout or deGrom. I mean, I can see how 'Mamba work ethic' and 'Mamba confidence' and 'Mamba edge' can be meaningful, but 'Mamba I'm kind of a dick Mentality' in baseball?

Someone convince me.

Maybe he’s working on a way to have one player take half of a team’s at bats.

Unless Bryce gave himself a nickname that I'm not aware of, no.

Ah, Kobe. Remember when he raped a teenager in a Denver hotel room?

Aw, come on now, that's not fair. It was in Eagle, Colorado, up near Vail.

Is there anyone else who nicknamed themselves? I remember that Tim Raines said he wanted to be called Rock, but I don't know if he came up with that himself or if someone else did and he just liked it.

What, you guys don't remember the thread we had here about Mets' prospect Peter Alonso renaming himself "Pete?"

The former assistant traveling secretary for the Yankees tried to give himself the nickname "T-Bone."

My money is on more unassisted putouts.
