HUGE WBC update: Rosters for WBC released!!!

(Link: Team-By-Team listing of what players from what MLB teams are on preliminary 45-man rosters)

MLB has released the initial up-to-45 man rosters (i.e. not the final rosters) for the WBC. They don’t, alas, have a list of what organizations each player is with, so it is up to someone else to figure out where the non-MLB players are coming from.

Australia has such names as Grant Balfour, Ryan Rowland-Smith and Phil Stockman on the roster.

Canada has basically who you would expect to be on the Roster on the roster. Morneau, Bay and Rich Harden (should he participate) are the biggest names. Dempster isn’t on it.

China is, well, China. I think only two or three of the players on the team have played in North America or have been signed as ceremonial “Hey, look, we signed a Chinese guy!” minor leaguers.

Chinese Taipei has no “highlighted” (I.e. has a MLB.com page) players.

Cuba has their usual roster of “amateur” all-stars. The Yankees and Mets both are holding out hope that somebody will defect this time (unlike in 2006).

The Dominican is as good as you’d expect. The only position where they are weak is catcher.

Italy, it would seem, has a surprising number of actual Italians on it, alongside such ringers as Jason Grilli, Frank Catalanotto and Nick Punto.

Japan has Ichiro!, Dice-K, Yu Darvish, Aki Iwamura, Fukudome and more.

Korea will try to repeat it’s amazing run from the first WBC, but looking at that roster, I don’t see it.

Mexico put Matt Garza on the roster (even though he already said that he’d only pitch for America- although maybe the fact he wasn’t invited by USA will change that). When did the Hairston boys become Mexican?

The Netherlands is the dark horse of the Tournament, in my opinion. They don’t want Andruw Jones either—but they’ll take Sidney Ponson. Of all the things that have happened to Andruw, that might be what hurts the most.

Panama‘s mission this time around is not to get no-hit during the tourney.

Puerto Rico has suspect pitching, but is good elsewhere, and have enough catching to fill a division. And, yes, Bernie Williams is on the roster.

Of all the nations in the WBC, no country is bringing more of it’s star power than South Africa. A whole lot of good that will do it.

USA! USA! The United States has incredible depth, although I must ask whether Davey Johnson watched Justin Verlander last season (he won’t make the final roster, right?). The US will do well if the players play like they care. I think what is needed is a call from Barack Obama, or, better yet, a promise that he will make them exempt from any new taxes from his administration if they win it all. With such incentive, they’d be unstoppable.

Last but not least: Venezuela.

You stay classy, Planet Earth.

I still say Rickey should've been a bench player.

Sucks I wasn't born in South Africa; I'd be their middle reliever.

I was watching the WBC special on MLBN and they asked D Wright if he was going to squeal secrets on hitting Johan Santana to his American teammates if they play The Dominican Republic. Venezuela was not mentioned.

Where was the producer screaming into the ear of these commentators?

Yep, all three guys mentioned in this article are on the South Africa team.

Ngoepe, who writes his grade 12 examinations at Rand Park High School next month, is one of three South Africans recently signed by Major League clubs.

The Kansas City Royals snapped up Boksburg Cardinals’ pitcher Dylan Lindsay, who only turned 17 last month, while the Minnesota Twins signed 16-year-old Hein Robb – a left-arm pitcher.

The list reveals that Mpho Ngoepe of the Pirates is actually more often referred to as "Gift" Ngoepe. So I will quote more from the article about Gift Ngoepe.

“My mom says I have been hooked on baseball since I picked up a baseball bat for the first time when I was only two,” said Ngoepe, who turned down an offer to attend junior trials at Premiership giants, Sundowns.

“I’ve literally watched every game that has been played here.

“I remember watching the matches at the All Africa Games in 1999. Now, nine years on, I’m playing with a whole lot of the guys who played for South Africa then,” he said.

“It’s a great feeling to be signed up. I’ve worked all my life for this.

“I’ve always wanted to be a professional baseball player,” he revealed.

The Randburg Mets shortstop, who can switch hit, says he owes a lot to his club, their members, the South African Baseball Union and Barry Larkin, a former Cincinnati Reds shortstop who played Majors for 18 years and was an important part of the 1990 World Series championship team.

But anyway, my point was that Ngoepe is the only player with an African name on the South African team. I wonder how baseball got to be, as he says, in his blood.

Panama‘s mission this time around is not to get no-hit during the tourney.

Hey, they have Carlos Lee, Carlos Ruiz, Fernando Seguignol, Julio Zuleta, Jose Macias, Ruben Rivera, and Cirilo Cumberbatch!

The website is pretty stingy with the links to the players' mlb.com pages. Only Lee, Ruiz and for some reason Luis Durango have links.

That's right, Bernie Williams and Ruben Rivera will both be taking part.

This is the first time Nick Punto has ever been referred to as a "ringer".

Wow, Italy's listing Frankie Cat as an infielder. Assuming it's not a mistake, that won't end well.

Also, I might have to pony up for tickets to see Venezuela when they play in Toronto, if Felix, Johan, and Zambrano are starting.
   8. CraigK Posted: January 20, 2009 at 03:40 AM (#3055686)
Here's hoping Darvish realizes how much he likes pitching in America. :)
   9. Crispix Attacksel Rios Posted: January 20, 2009 at 03:43 AM (#3055691)
I thought Darvish would be a ringer on the Iranian team.
   10. CraigK Posted: January 20, 2009 at 03:43 AM (#3055693)
Why isn't Mariano pitching?
   11. Enrico Pallazzo Posted: January 20, 2009 at 03:45 AM (#3055694)
The South Africans have a kid born in 1992! on their provisional roster. I'm 20 and I already feel old. God damnit.

Mother of god, that's younger than my sister. And I semi-clearly remember 1992. Now I feel old.

Cripes... Half the Cubs staff is going - Zambrano, Marmol, Lilly, Harden... Angel Guzman on the Venezuelan team, too - though I guess we're not really counting on him for anything.

Still, I'd sure selfishly like to take Harden and probably Marmol off that list. I'd prefer Zambrano not go, but I think Zambrano has finally reached the age where I don't worry about his health and overuse as much as I once did.

Why isn't Mariano pitching?
He's not really big on pitching in spring training. He doesn't ever travel to road games. He's got a routine, a set number of innings he likes to pitch and stick to that. Anyway, he's coming off surgery, so I doubt he'd be ready even if he were interested.
   16. Crispix Attacksel Rios Posted: January 20, 2009 at 04:19 AM (#3055726)
I'm quite surprised to see BJ Ryan on the US roster...I might be the person here who is the least panicked by the specter of WBC-related injuries damaging the players' legitimate owners, but...

A) He is not exactly irreplaceable
B) He has already missed an entire season for the Blue Jays with an injury, which might have lingering effects that reduced his strikeout numbers in 2008 and could make him more of an injury risk than other "healthy" players.
C) If he does get a serious injury, his contract as a whole becomes a total debacle for the Jays even if he comes back in 2010 and equals his 2006 performance.

By the way! Maury Brown has got us a PDF file that lists the leagues and organizations of the players! It can be found here.

For those who care:

Australia draws its players from the Claxton Shield (it's domestic competition), MLB/MiLB, NPB and the KBO. (and free agents)

Canada draws players from MLB/MilB, NPB (Aaron Guiel) and free agents.

China draws players from it's league, three players from MiLB and one (Dawei Zhu) from NPB.

CT draws from MLB/MiLB, Chinese Taipei Collegiate ranks, the CPBL (the main source, obviously), the NPB, Amateur ranks and Free Agents.

Cuba is entirely from the CBL.

DR is entirely from MLB/MiLB and (MLB/MiLB level) free agents.

Italy is from MLB/MiLB, FIBS (Italian League) and free agents.

Japan is from NPB and MLB/MiLB.

Korea draws from KBO, MLB/MiLB, NPB and free agents.

Mexico draws from MLB/MiLB, Mexican League and one player from the KBO (so that's what happened to Karim Garcia!)

Netherlands draw from the Hoofdklasse, MLB/MiLB, Mexican League, Atlantic League and free agents.

Panama draws from MLB/MiLB, NPB, Mexican League and free agents.

Puerto Rico: all MLB/MiLB players or free agents.

South Africa is a eclectic mix of Minor Leaguers, American Collegiates, players in the SABU (domestic competition) and a lone player in the Claxton Shield.

USA is all MLB.

Venezuela is MLB/MiLB, but with one Venezuelan League player, a Atlantic Leaguer, a NPB player (Alex Cabrera) added as well

Yeah, the Mets are also sending a ton of players to this thing:
Reyes/Wright/Beltran/Delgado/Schneider/K-Rod/Putz/Feliciano/Santana/Ollie

Pirates have players listed for seven different countries. None of them are playing for the US, the Dominican, or Venezuela. Now that is unique.

I can't imagine Harden pitching when he's hurt (again.)

Hey, they have Carlos Lee, Carlos Ruiz, Fernando Seguignol, Julio Zuleta, Jose Macias, Ruben Rivera, and Cirilo Cumberbatch!
Cirilo Cumberbatch is a spectacular name. I need a Cirilo Cumberbatch replica jersey.

so that's what happened to Karim Garcia!
Who is Karim Garcia?

Italy has some Italian-born minor leaguers on its roster: Alex Maestri is in the Cubs' system and reached AA this year. Luca Panerati is a finesse guy in the Astros' system. Alex Liddi is a 3b in Seattle's system - great tools, struggles with pitch recognition.
   23. CraigK Posted: January 20, 2009 at 04:59 AM (#3055754)
Good rule of thumb for a team's power is the number of red-linked players on the '09 WBC bullpen page.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/2009_World_Baseball_Classic_(Rosters)

South Africa with by far the most, and both the US and the DR with zero.
   24. Eraser-X is emphatically dominating teh site!!! Posted: January 20, 2009 at 05:05 AM (#3055761)
I think Korea will be quite competitive. They don't appear to have much less talent than last time, and I think the KBO is balanced weird--much lower floor, mean, and median talent than NPB or MLB, but some real high ceiling players. That makes them able to field a strong team for exactly this type of competition.

EDIT:
I'd also be extremely scared of the Darvish/Matsuzaka combo from JPN.
   25. J. Cross Posted: January 20, 2009 at 05:29 AM (#3055771)
Watching Darvish pitch is what I'm looking forward to more than anything else.

The US team ought to be good (although that was true last time) and I still like that Venezuala rotation with Santana, King Felix and Carlos Zambrano (although I put money on Venezuala last time and that didn't work out).

I'm going to root for semifinal matches of:

US v. Cuba and Japan v. Venezuala

that would be pretty fun.

The Pirates: we can't even win when we don't have to play for the Pirates.

Braves are sending 16 players (including MiLB).
Cubs have at least 17. As do the Reds and I think a few other teams. So no, the Braves don't have the highest.

Hell, they'd rather have Randall Simon over Andruw. Indeed how far Andruw's stock has fallen.

For our PR team I'm disappointed that David De Jesus (who has Puerto Rican ancestry) was not included, which means a left field motley crew of Lou Montanez, Luis Matos, Jesus Feliciano and, yes, Bernie Williams alongside Carlos Beltran and Alex Rios. Other than that, no big surprises. Mike Aviles should be an intriguing addition to our infield.
   37. Blackadder Posted: January 20, 2009 at 03:53 PM (#3055988)
If all the expected teams win, Pool 2 will consist of the USA, Venezuela, Peurto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. That would be pretty awesome.

Pool 1 Favored:
Japan
Korea
Cuba
Mexico

Pool 2 Favored:
U.S.
Venezuela
PR
DR

Final Round: Who knows?
Japan
Korea
Venezuela
DR

I think Japan repeats.

I'm of the age where players are starting to retire after fairly decent careers.

I'm just starting to see players who I remember as rookies, who had a few all-star-quality years, became veterans, and are now retired. Matt Morris might have been the first guy about whom I thought "I've witnessed that guy's entire career, and he was a pretty significant player." Or maybe Preston Wilson.

This is happening with Michael Barrett, Richie Sexson and Doug Mientkiewicz as well.
