HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

Luke Voit’s 2-run single gives the Yankees a 1st-inning lead on a bullpen day getaway-game in KC before they head to the Field of Dreams. And now Odor follows with an RBI single as Benintendi appears to pull up on a possibly catchable soft fly ball. 3-0.

In yesterday's chatter, somebody mentioned the odd interleague results: AL 119-100 but with a -9 run differential. The record advantage is entirely due to the ALE running all over the NLE at 50-27 ... with a run differential only around +25. The rest of the AL is a bit under 500 against the NL although you can blame that on the Rangers at 3-12. Obviously the ALE-NLE matchups are largely a mix of small ALE wins and blowout NLE wins (e.g. Rays beat Atl 7-6 and 7-5 and lost 9-0). The most dominant performance I noticed roaming through results though is Jays-Atl ... Jays are 6-0 with a 43-20 differential.

Who knows what it all really means but the ALE isn't running roughshod over the rest of the AL nor is the NLE getting killed by the rest of the NL and the rest of the AL and NL are pretty much fighting to a draw. So it just looks fluky and the leagues are pretty balanced overall.

Mets trailed 4-1 in a suspended game entering today vs WAS

Red Sox up 5-0 in the 2nd. The way their pen is going these days, I reckon another 5 runs should make that lead safe.
   6. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2021 at 08:00 PM (#6033923)
another day, another game in which the teams third best hitter is hitting 6th or later.....
   7. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 11, 2021 at 08:37 PM (#6033931)
Red Sox now up 8!-0 in the 4th. They are going for the "all your eggs in one basket win" with the SP actually throwing a 1 hitter through 4 and scoring 8 runs to boot.

Of course tomorrow the SP will go 4 and give up 3 runs and they'll lose 6-5....
   8. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 11, 2021 at 08:37 PM (#6033932)
Whoa, 10-0 now. I think the earth stopped spinning.
   9. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2021 at 08:51 PM (#6033934)
Yadier with a double, ties somebody for some record again. (doubles by a primary catcher with gabby Hartnett)
   10. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2021 at 08:59 PM (#6033935)
Yea... DeJong makes up for Bader and hits a two out single to make the game 3-0 for Waino... breathing room for the old man.
   11. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2021 at 09:01 PM (#6033936)
3-0 Cardinals, Pirates have 2 hits for the night, Waino up to bat and gets his second hit of the night to make it 4-0...

Waino has 50 pitches on the night going into the bottom of the 5th...
   12. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 11, 2021 at 09:02 PM (#6033937)
Eovaldi has gone 5, 2 hits, 0 runs. This is pretty much unheard of for a Red Sox starter the last 30 days. Jokes aside, the pen really needs this guy to go 7 if possible.
   13. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2021 at 09:05 PM (#6033938)
every time I ##### about Molina batting higher up in the lineup than he should, he gets at least one hit (he has two tonight)
   14. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2021 at 09:06 PM (#6033939)
nice stat, Cardinals have scored 4 runs or more for 7 consecutive games, that is what they should be capable of doing.
   15. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2021 at 09:13 PM (#6033941)
I don't care what anyone thinks, Waino has enough in the tank to probably pitch a couple of more years... top 5 in the Nl in innings pitched, his fip closely represents his era and his era+ is 110 or so going into tonight... and he has 15 quality starts in 23 starts...
   16. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2021 at 09:18 PM (#6033942)
Going to the 7th inning, Waino is at 62 pitches, the Pirates are trying to gift wrap him a complete game.
   17. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 11, 2021 at 09:19 PM (#6033943)
Wow, Red Sox up 14-0 now with the Dalbec homer.

They are definitely setting themselves up for the 6-4 loss tomorrow.
   18. TomH Posted: August 11, 2021 at 09:23 PM (#6033945)
Red Sox with 14 runs in 5 innings... and ZERO home runs.

Not sure which to believe.
   20. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 11, 2021 at 09:31 PM (#6033947)
Jake Arrieta now sporting a nifty 6.88 ERA.
   21. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 11, 2021 at 09:32 PM (#6033948)
oops, Dalbec hit a triple...I really need to pay more attention.
   22. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2021 at 09:34 PM (#6033950)
Waino at 69 pitches going to the 8th.
   23. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2021 at 09:36 PM (#6033951)
League leader for complete games is 3. Waino with 2 going into today.
   24. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2021 at 09:44 PM (#6033952)
Bader with a nice play.... going into the ninth, Cardinals up 4-0.. Pirates 2 hits today (after just 1 hit yesterday) Waino with 82 pitches going into the ninth... Waino first up in the ninth.... Ummm I'm thinking they'll let him bat here. (he also has two hits tonight-- as many as the Pirates team)
   25. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 11, 2021 at 09:52 PM (#6033953)
Cubs have struck out 11 times, seeing only 52 pitches. Burnes might have a shot at 20 tonight.
   26. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2021 at 09:53 PM (#6033954)
Cardinals are screwing up by rallying in the top of the ninth... don't ice Waino's arm. LOL
   27. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2021 at 09:55 PM (#6033955)
Arenado helps it out by hitting into a double play... Waino going for his 11th shutout of his career... just needs the Pirates to cooperate.
   28. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2021 at 10:00 PM (#6033958)
And yes I know 11 doesn't sound like a lot, but it's third among active pitchers. And it's very unlikely any active pitcher is going to reach him. (4th is Verlander at 9,)

88 pitches and a complete game shutout.
   29. salvomania Posted: August 11, 2021 at 10:04 PM (#6033960)
Nice CG shutout by Wainwright, a two-hitter on just 88 pitches. It was against the Pirates, but still, that's a nice performance. The announcers say it's the fewest pitches by a Cardinal ever in a CG shutout, which I doubt, but probably the fewest since there have been pitch-count records.

Waino is now 11-6, and is now second in the NL in IP and is sporting a 3.27 era, a WHIP around 1.09, and about 8.4 K/9. Not bad for a guy who's going to be 40 in 19 days.
   30. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2021 at 10:06 PM (#6033961)
After tonight, Waino is at 11-6, 148.6 innings pitched (which is top three) tied for first in complete games... he may not be a cy young finalist, but he's on the list of pitchers you trust...
   31. Srul Itza Posted: August 11, 2021 at 10:07 PM (#6033962)
Cabrera inching toward 500 -- got 499 today.
   32. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 11, 2021 at 10:08 PM (#6033963)
Wow, 18-1 Red Sox, a pythag game for sure
   33. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 11, 2021 at 10:15 PM (#6033966)
Now 20-1. Red Sox unleash all their frustration in a single outing. Would've been nice to score 7 run in 3 games straight, but hey, a win is a win.
   34. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2021 at 10:22 PM (#6033968)
interesting stat.. Waino's double (his 50th extra base hit of his career) was the 4th most extra base hits among pitchers since 1969... I didn't even know that was a thing that was up for records.
   35. salvomania Posted: August 11, 2021 at 10:27 PM (#6033969)
I love it: The Rays have scored 7 runs in the 9th inning---and are still down by 12 runs.
   36. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2021 at 10:28 PM (#6033970)
Hilarious... Wainwright declared that a complete game with less than 100 pitches is called a Maddux. He complained that he would pitch a complete game and look at the pitch count and see he was over 100.... and shake his head.
   37. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 11, 2021 at 10:34 PM (#6033971)
Yep, #35, Red Sox decide to make it interesting by coughing up 7 in the 9th and hanging on to the 20-8 win.
   38. The Duke Posted: August 11, 2021 at 10:48 PM (#6033973)
You can squint and start to see how Waino could get cy young votes. Were he to pitch like he has recently in 7-8 more starts he’s have to get some votes. A strong finish could put him anywhere from 6-10 when you tally up the achievements ( maybe 15 wins, at least 3 CG/1 SO,best pitcher on his team, top 5 innings pitched )

I can imagine it, but I doubt that this particular website would approve of it, if it happened. He's obviously not going to win no matter what happens going forward, but at the same time if he keeps being who he has been for most of the season he might get a vote here or there. ... again an innings eater who will probably finish top five in innings pitched, with a positive era and fip etc.... ultimately the guy who is probably at worse the 20th best pitcher in baseball while gathering other material arguments....

Go get blotto if you own Votto (I do!)

since July 19, with tonight's 4-for-4, 2 HR, game-tying HR in 9th to boot:

31 for 79, .392 and 14-32-20

multiply by 7 to get a mere 553 AB, and it's a pace of .392-98-224-140

even Bugs Bunny is jealous of these 3+ weeks lol

   41. The Duke Posted: August 11, 2021 at 11:04 PM (#6033977)
Apparently Gibson has 56 CGSO. I think he only won about 250 games so that means 20% of his wins were CGSO. That seems incredible to me. I’ll probably be told this was commonplace but it boggles my mind
   42. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2021 at 11:14 PM (#6033979)
Blyleven actually has more shutouts, and had to wait 15 years to make the hof.
   43. Mike A Posted: August 11, 2021 at 11:26 PM (#6033980)
Glad I turned the Braves game on. Albies with the 2-out game winning homer in the 11th.

I have to admit I thought this team would wither and die without Soroka and Acuna. But here we are, about to be tied for 1st place in this strange, strange NL East race.
   44. Howie Menckel Posted: August 12, 2021 at 12:41 AM (#6033983)
NL LEAST

PHI 59-55
ATL 59-55
NYM 57-55

the Mets by the All-Star break already had played more doubleheaders than any MLB team in a season since the 1979 Blue Jays. today was completion of 8 innings of a suspended game, then a rainout, so that doesn't count. they'll play 2 again on Thursday. #longslog

Since June 28:

38 games, 167 pa, .343/.437/.786, 17 hr and 40 rbi. Joey Votto, RBI machine! is about the last thing I expected of the 2021 season.
   46. Don August(us) Cesar Geronimo Berroa Posted: August 12, 2021 at 08:26 AM (#6033994)

obviously there were a lot more shutouts in the olden days, but...

Walter Johnson 110 of 417
Pete Alexander 90 of 373
Christy Mathewson 79 of 373

more contemporary of Bob,

Blyleven 60 of 287
Tom Seaver 61 of 311

The 70s pitchers were definitely an end of an era in high shutout totals.

Clemens ended up with 46, and the active leader is Kershaw with 15.

   47. cardsfanboy Posted: August 12, 2021 at 08:35 AM (#6033996)
There is a reason that I wish these game threads were series threads and not just individual day threads, anything interesting that comes up, gets tossed aside an forgotten in the next day's game thread.

It's why I argue we should do a Monday thru Thursday game thread, and a Friday through Sunday.
   48. Hombre Brotani Posted: August 12, 2021 at 01:12 PM (#6034076)
That's not a bad idea. We'll try that next week and see what happens.
   49. The Mighty Quintana Posted: August 12, 2021 at 05:22 PM (#6034154)
Sounds like a good idea, the Friday-Sunday thread should be 70% drunker.
