Ichiro wins Seattle’s heart again with moving speech ahead of walk-off win

The Seattle Mariners are spending their penultimate weekend at home this season honoring future Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki’s career with “Ichiro Weekend,” which kicked off Friday night in Seattle.

The 45-year-old retired from playing after the Mariners’ season-opening series against the Oakland Athletics in his native Japan. Ichiro has been serving as a special adviser to the team since early in the 2018 season, but came back to take the field for a final time in Tokyo.

After playing the first of three games against the White Sox on Friday, the Mariners hosted Ichiro Fireworks Night. Then Saturday night, in addition to giving out Ichiro bobbleheads, the team staged a pregame ceremony in his honor — before the team walked off on an Omar Narvaez homer to win 2-1.

Ichiro, who throughout his career did most of his public speaking in Japanese through a translator, addressed the crowd for five minutes in perfect English. Current team members and fellow franchise legends Ken Griffey Jr. and Edgar Martinez stood behind him.

Turns out this is one thing Ichiro really could do if he wanted to.

Just for the hell of it, he's going to do his HOF induction speech in fluent Farsi.

If it's not semaphore, he might as well not show up.

Ichiro could get everyone in the world to speak Esperanto if he wanted to.

Ichiro steps up to give his speech. It's in an entirely new language, one that Ichiro has invented himself. And yet, everyone understands every word.

Hard not to love a guy who loves baseball as much as Ichiro does.

I think it's impossible for anyone to be a fan of baseball and not love Ichiro. Outside of being a Raybot, everyone loves Ichiro. He's the perfect example of who we want our baseball heroes to be.

Even Raybot came around and said he'd be a HOF'er after Ichiro got to 3000 hits, right?

Not exactly.. his argument was mostly that he should be judge strictly on his performance in the USA!!!! major leagues... and that 60 war is a stretch, but his peak as a major leaguer might matter...but the fact that he had performance anywhere else other than in the major leagues should be ignored... the 3000 hits isn't as important as his career war... Ray is in the long line of stat guys who wouldn't put Lou Brock in the hof either.

You might have a legit beef with Brock, who has only 45 WAR (48 if you don't negative-WAR seasons, which I don't), dragged down by his awful dWAR (-16.8, 35th-worst all-time, which interestingly is the same as his contemporary, Willie Horton). In any event, that's well short of my (informal) 62 WAR in/out line.

But, of course, Lou has two major exceptions: 3,000 hits and 938 SB. And a coupla rings. As Bill James said, Brock slides in without a throw.

Ichiro's been a Hall of Famer since at least 2010. The 3,000 hits were just the cherry on the cake.

I don't have Brock as a HOFer, though I understand why others do. Ichiro is an easy in.
