HOW WILL THE ANGELS WIN TODAY?!

Reports indicate the Yankees will have their full roster available in Toronto.

WHICH GAME WILL THE METS LOSE TO THE BRAVES?

The Mets have won all seven of their series so far in 2022 - losing exactly one game each time.

This is a four-gamer in three days, including a doubleheader on Tuesday.

Jo Adell better start hitting soon because he has no idea how to play the outfield. He almost cost the Angels the game yesterday with a horrendous read on a fly ball in the ninth inning that he let drop, and he just cost the team a couple runs by taking a terrible angle on a ball that he should have gotten to but instead dropped for a double. He looks like someone who has played infield all his life and is being put in the outfield as an emergency. He does not seem comfortable out there.

As a note - Adell has played outfield his entire career. He might just be lost as a defender.

Also, Taylor Ward has been hitting a ton, which means there's only one outfield spot open when everyone's healthy (yeah, I know), and Marsh can actually catch the ball. I'm a big Adell fan, but his defense is a tragedy, and I can't help but think his difficulties out there are putting additional pressure on him at the plate.

At least Adell is hitting a little bit -- 105 OPS+, 324 BABIP, good HR%, lousy K% -- which is an improvement over what he's done to date. Jarred Kelenic, still just 22, is getting run over by MLB pitchers again -- 141/211/297 with a 41% K rate. DRS loves his defense so far at least (after despising it with the heat of a thousand suns last year) -- he has been moved to RF.

So how do Mets fans feel about the trade now. Cano's not paying off obviously but neither is Kelenic yet and, after that lousy 2018, Diaz has been pretty good. The trade's turning into a very expensive nothingburger for both sides:

Diaz 2.1 WAR (and counting) for about $23 M (pending FA)
Cano 1.2 WAR (and counting in the wrong direction) for $48 M (and counting in the wrong direction)
Bautista -0.3 WAR (hasn't played in majors since 2019)
Bruce 0.3 WAR (and 0.6 for Philly) for $28 M
Dunn 1.5 WAR for min (the key get! Not playing this year, is he hurt?)
Swarzak -0.3 WAR (and 0.5 for Atl) for $8.5 M
Kelenic -1.6 WAR for min
$20 M from Sea to NYM (per Cot's)

So Seattle saved $63.5 M and got 1.5 WAR out of Justin Dunn (traded to Cincy as part of the Suarez&Winker; deal) and of course Kelenic might still turn into a good player. Clearly a win but neither the players nor the cash has had much impact yet. The Mets are on the hook for about $62 M total (taking out the unpaid suspension year) and got 3.3 WAR.

EDIT: and the next thread tells me Cano has been DFA'd so the WAR is no longer counting in the wrong direction, just the money. And I think I made a boo-boo on the money side in there somewhere but I'm too lazy to fix it. You get the idea.

I know Adell's been okay with the bat so far, and the BABiP isn't as high as I thought it might be. But he looks overmatched quite a bit at the plate. His hitting stats are strange - he's average in exit velo and hard hit percentage, pretty good in barrels/plate appearance, but he strikes out so much.

We'll see how it goes because he needs to produce with the bat to be above replacement level.

And Adell strikes out on a 3-2 pitch that was ball four by a lot (and it wasn't even a breaking ball he was fooled on - it was a fastball eight inches inside). Instead of first and second with no one out in a game where the Angels desperately need baserunners, it's runner on first with one out.

Cards-Royals, second batter in the bottom of the first---Paul Goldschmidt---hits a homer off Zack Greinke, and it's the only run scored in the game.

Steven Matz pitches effectively against a bad Royals lineup to run his record to 3-1.

Speaking of bad lineups: the Cardinals entered the day with a more-or-less "league average" offense (4.24 r/g, lg avg 4.19), but that is being buoyed by three hitters: Tommy Edman, Nolan Areando, and a recently hot Paul Goldschmidt.

The Cardinals finished the day with FIVE batters in their starting lineup having an OPS under .500; think about that: what kind of on-base percentages and slugging percentages does a hitter have to have to have an OPS under .500?

Happy birthday!

C: Jarrod Saltalamacchia

2B: Eddie Collins (HoF)

The pitching staff is thin, but this is literally everybody with > 50 MLB or NeL IP (!!). Also - good luck, Felix, covering 80% of the outfield.

Nice 8-pitch first inning for Bassitt to start off the set against the Braves.

Giancarlo Stanton catches a ball an inch or two from the top of the 10 foot right field wall in Toronto in the 2nd inning. #Height Privilege

That Michael A Taylor catch in the Royals game was unreal. We've all seen a lot of MLB in our times, but that has to up there in the rankings; it's impressive.

Unless you're Ray, then it's a catch that any decent CF could've made......
   16. salvomania Posted: May 02, 2022 at 09:09 PM (#6074889)
Man, the Braves with back-to-back at-bats with swings at pitches 2 inches off the ground and about a foot outside, both of which drive in runs against Bassitt.

EDIT: Nevermind, I don't know what replay I was seeing, only one of the swings was as described.
   17. Howie Menckel Posted: May 02, 2022 at 09:20 PM (#6074891)
Zac Gallen had an ERA of 2.78 in 155 IP in 2019-20 combined.

this year, his ERA is down to 0.42 after a 4th consecutive gem.

the Diamondbacks have something in this 26-year-old ex-Marlin who was acquired in 2019 for ... wow, Jazz Chisholm, who is a stud himself.

the Mets HBP d'jour tonight was experienced by catcher McCann.

that's 21 HBP of Mets already this season - and it has cost their opponents.... welp, none of them have scored.

Big day for Gleyber Torres - a 2-run HR & clutch RBI single accounted for all the Yankees runs in their 3-2 victory over the Blue Jays. That’s 10 consecutive wins, a fairly impressive accomplishment, although it’s still early.

Early or not, those wins still count. It's impressive.

It's a tough division, Toronto and Tampa are not going anywhere. If the Red Sox actually figure out what those long wooden sticks are used for, they might actually put up a few wins.

So 60-odd good pitchers are being dumped back into AAA. I wonder if this will dampen some of the hitting I've seen from down there. Hard to judge your hitting talent when some Of the leagues best pitchers are playing In MLB
   22. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 03, 2022 at 12:47 AM (#6074927)
FWIW, the Yankees 17-6 record equals the 23-game mark of their legendary 114-win 1998 team. Won’t be easy for the current crew to overtake the old-timers (ouch!), who won their next 6, and 9 of 10.
