Indians hire formerly imprisoned sportscaster

Sure…while Byron Shane “Oso Blanco” Chubbuck stirs in rot!

The Cleveland Indians are taking a chance on a sportscaster fresh out of prison for not paying taxes on gambling earnings.

SportsTime Ohio, a 24-hour TV network owned by the club, announced Tuesday that it has hired longtime local radio personality Bruce Drennan to host a weekday talk show entitled “All Bets Are Off with Bruce Drennan.”

Drennan was released from a federal prison in Morgantown, W.Va., on March 2 after serving a five-month sentence for tax fraud.

Good for him. We might make judgments about other people based on their criminal records, w/e, but it's nice to see someone proactively participating in public life after making a mistake.

I'll be more impressed when they hire a latter day One-Eyed Connolly.

Oh wait. He wasn't imprisoned for the quality of his broadcasts. Damn. Looks like Don Orsillo skates again.

I've never been a huge Drennan fan, but he's at the very least a better broadcaster than Matt Underwood.

So it's a start.

And, now that I think about it, SportsTime Ohio is pretty far from being a 24-hour TV network. They sign on around 4PM, go off the air around midnight.

IIRC, they were hinting at going 24 hours last summer but never did.

If I got a TV show right out of prison for tax fraud, I don't think I'd want allusions to a quasi-legal institution like gambling. I think I'd call it "Filing Early with Howard Megdal." The title doesn't exactly scream "rehabilitated" to me.
