Indians keep Franmil Reyes away from summer camp for not wearing mask at party

The Cleveland Indians are keeping outfielder Franmil Reyes away from training camp after they spotted him on social media attending a weekend holiday party without wearing a mask.

Manager Terry Francona said Reyes is not in any trouble with the team. But by not practicing social distancing or wearing a mask he exposed himself—and his teammates—to infection, and the team is being overly cautious.

Francona said Reyes, who was traded to Cleveland last season from San Diego, will have to be retested for the virus “when it’s appropriate.”

“He’s not in the penalty box,” Francona said. “It’s just the way we have to operate right now. So, hopefully we’ll see him soon.”

Reyes was a .237 hitter last year. They wouldn't dare do this to Santana or Lindor.

Smart to send a message quick about this stuff right away. Hopefully players get the hint before regular season games begin.

Reyes was a .237 hitter last year.

In his short stint with the Indians which also included a roughly 40-HR pace. If we include his full 2019 then he hit 249/310/512 with 37 HR in 548 PA, good for a 112 OPS+ which would have been 3rd-best on the Indians. He's your standard high-K high-power modern slugger with limited (or poor) defensive ability. Now .249 "hitter" doesn't get anybody excited either but league average for his context was 254 so we're not talking Mario Mendoza here.

When are people going to get the message that wearing a mask doesn't keep you from getting sick; it just keeps you from spreading the virus to others?

The partying may be more of a problem than no mask. Details seem lacking, but players being out & about more than necessary, or prudent, increases the risk for all. The MLB plan could work if players (and staff) minimize their outside contacts, but may not if some push the envelope too far.

If everyone wears masks, then you are indeed prevented from getting sick.
