Indians place Brad Hand on outright waivers

Doing so, as Zack noted, could potentially save the Indians his $1 million buyout if another team wants to pay Hand the $10 million he’s owed instead of courting him in free agency. If not, the Indians can just decline his option and pay the $1 million to let him go. Keep in mind that outright waivers are not the same as being designated for assignment — if a team claims Hand there is no trading him, he and his salary are just off Cleveland’s books.

Hand was initially acquired by the Indians ahead of the 2018 trade deadline along with Adam Cimber in exchange for catching prospect Francisco Mejia. In 107 innings since, he has served as the Tribe’s closer racking up 58 caves with a 2.78 ERA and 2.62 FIP.

Wow. He’ll get gobbled up by a rich team immediately. If the angels don’t claim him they are idiots

Maybe. Or maybe they just have bad memories of what happened last time they paid around 10 million for a Cleveland closer.

Surprised this wasn't an "Indians Fold Hand" type headline.

If they're not trying to trade him, either they need the roster space ASAP or else they expect salaries to drop dramatically.

HAND JOB PROSPECTS MURKY AFTER BEING WAIVED
Nah, there are plenty of teams whose bullpens could use a Hand.

Cleveland probably talked to other teams about a trade, and found little interest.

16 saves & a 2.05 ERA/1.37 FIP, with a 22-to-4 K/BB ratio in 22 IP is pretty good under 2020 conditions. If any of the better off teams think MLB economics will rebound a bit next season, he ought to be picked up, although he may not be the only one in that category before too long. Looks to be an interesting off-season.

Threads like this remind me of John Brattain. He would have been all over this one.

Cubs should grab him, won't.

A pretty dick move by the team. Instead of declining the option, giving him the buyout and letting him go FA they put him at risk of having to wait a year to be FA in the hopes of saving a mere million.

Aloha, Mister Hand.
   16. The Duke Posted: October 29, 2020 at 08:20 PM (#5986595)
Why is this a dick move? It’s just economics agreed to in a contract. It’s a smart move. I guess the cardinals could have done this and maybe saved themselves a million which means they must still be keeping the lines of communication open with Wong.

One million dollars is real money.
   19. The Yankee Clapper Posted: October 29, 2020 at 08:52 PM (#5986603)
The market for $10M+ relievers hasn’t totally dried up. The Yankee picked up their 2022 $14M option on Zack Britton, which prevents him from opting out of his $13M 2021 contract. Seems like they could have declined the 2022 option and probably retained Britton, if the free agent market is as bad as some suggest, making Britton unlikely to opt out of $13M guaranteed.

That risk was there the instant they all agreed on the contract. This move isn't creating it.

Fine, they didn't create the risk, they made it the reality. That's better?

Yes, it's a dick move.
   22. Nasty Nate Posted: October 30, 2020 at 08:43 PM (#5986751)
Yes, it's a dick move

Only on par with trading him, right? They couldn't cost him the $1 million either way.

In any event, no one claimed him so he's a free agent and was spared the horror of a team option being exercised.

That was my first thought. My second was, "They ARE idiots, tho."

They had a Hand
But it went bad
So to spite it
They lopped it off
