Indians to exercise Kluber’s option, decline Kipnis

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Indians wasted no time on one of their biggest offseason decisions: Bringing back Corey Kluber was a no-brainer.

Cleveland said it intends to exercise Kluber’s $17.5 million contract option for next season, when the two-time Cy Young Award winner is expected to be healthy _ and maybe rejuvenated _ following an injury-shortened 2019.

Kluber made only seven starts before a line drive in Miami broke his right arm. The 33-year-old endured months of inactivity and rehab and was nearing a return when a strained oblique muscle set him back.

On Wednesday, team president Chris Antonetti announced the team’s decision on Kluber. And while the move wasn’t unexpected, the timing was unusual because the Indians typically take their time with major moves.

Seems like a no brainer to pick up Kluber's option for 2020.

The really interesting question is whether Kluber will be an Indian in 2020 or whether he will be traded. Yes, he was injured in 2019, but he only costs $17.5MM for 2020 (plus a $1MM buyout for 2021).

From the Indians side, they would have had to pay a $1MM buyout if they hadn't picked up Kluber's option, so it stands to reason that they would only trade Kluber if somebody picks up the full tab and sends them a good prospect (otherwise, why do it) or if somebody sends them A LOT of good prospects and Cleveland picks up some of the tab.

In any case, it gives Cleveland an interesting trade asset this off-season.

You're probably right. They'd rather be 5 games worse, and $17.5M richer.

2, oh, there's a big chance Kluber remains with the Indians, since picking up his option only costs them $17.5MM ($16.5MM for 2020 plus 2021's $1MM buyout - there was already a $1MM sunk cost buyout should the Indians not have picked up Kluber's 2020 option).

But they'd be fools not to see if there's a market of him.
