Inside Baseball with Jesse Barfield: Jeers to baggy uniforms

Nice to see Barfield landed that fashionopolis gig at Vogue Hommes International.

Fashion tips from the Style Master

What ever happened to the fashion police in baseball? Have you guys seen these uniforms some of these guys are wearing today? Some of them look like the old Negro League uniforms. My uncle played for the Cincinnati Clowns and I have photos of his team. Those were some ugly, baggy uniforms. So, have we gone retro? Listen, can you believe that some of the guys have their uniform pants made like their street jeans? Come on now! Let’s get out of
the music videos and on to the field.

Some of you may think I am joking, but I am serious. Let’s keep the integrity of the game. Take it from me, I love to style - my family calls me the Style Master - but it’s with taste and off the field. What’s funny is you may think these guys are trying to cover up bad bodies, but they’re not. Most of these guys have sculpted bodies under all that fabric. Take it from me, they better enjoy having a young, athletic body while they can because time does take it’s toll.

Can the baggy uniforms be the reason that female attendance has gone down a bit? Chicks may dig the long ball, but if the uniform isn’t fitting, in the baseball stands, the chicks ain’t sitting.

I didn't know Barfield wrote a column. By ex-player standards, that was pretty good.

Anybody know the name of his uncle?

I like Jesse's blog.

I remember having a teammate when I was with the Yankees: he was a bit short in stature, let's just leave it at that

Luis Polonia would be my best guess.

my family calls me the Style Master

Maybe for the same reason they called Ernest Bonham "Tiny".

How a man that saw Earl Weaver and Don Zimmer in a uni up close and personal becomes an advocate against the baggy look is beyond me.

According to this, Albert Overton.

Is it amazing how rumpled some of the guys look these days.

In related news, the NCAA basketball tourney now looks like a bunch of guys wearing coulottes. I haven't seen that much material in a pair of pants since Sid Fernandez retired. It's hard to believe these kids think they are stylin'.

I don't expect (or desire) a return to tightie whities and knee socks, but the current trend is really stupid-looking.

Yet another thing we can blame on Derek Bell, IMO. He was doing the baggy thing before it was even on the radar.

We used to call Polonia's glove "The Pope's Hat"

i agree with 6. as for baseball uniforms, don't get me started. i don't mind them being a little on the roomy side, but i honestly think the commissioner needs to step in the way stern did in the NBA and make those idiots PULL THE BOTTOMS UP TO JUST UNDER THE KNEES and show their socks!!!!
there's really no logic to it, i just think they need to LOOK like ballplayers, not guys running around in sleepwear.
and get off my lawn.

Boy, I guess he was on the cutting edge of style. Here I thought he was a guy who needed to have his eyelids circumcised.

- well maybe YOU don't but i would sure like nice tight unis - and high socks too

now SOME guys would be REQUIRED to wear the baggys - miguel cabrera, carlos lard, shawn chacon, cc sabathia, sidney ponson

to name a few

His optical organs looked like they were in Operation Shutdown from the get-go.

On the bright side, he could probably find work as a stunt double for goldfish.

Best Regards

John
