Is Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen the latest star sent packing by Derek Jeter’s Marlins?

NEW YORK — Zac Gallen had just moved into his Miami apartment.

Two weeks later, he needed to move out.

A day after making his seventh career start with the Marlins and lowering his ERA to 2.72 with seven innings of two-run, eight-strikeout ball, the rookie right-hander was summoned to manager Don Mattingly’s office.

Gallen, who was just beginning to get acclimated to his new surroundings, initially assumed the coaching staff wanted to go over his last outing. But the Marlins had other plans on July 31 — and they weren’t sending Gallen back down to the minors.

Question- what do we do when Betteridge’s Law points to one answer to a question and what we’ve seen of the Marlins in action points to another?

Jazz Chisholm, who Gallan was traded for, batted .220 in the Southern League this season. Granted, he is 21, hit for some power, stole a few bases, and played shortstop, so it's not like he's a total zero, but the Marlins traded a good, cost-controlled pitcher with six seasons of team control after this one, for a AA shortstop batting .220 with strikeout issues.

And a really bad name.

Seriously though, the kid is K-ing 33% of the time in AA. He was over 30% in A ball, and 27% in R.

That's Joey Gallo territory. Of course Gallo had a .300 ISO in the minors.

Betteridge's Law fails here, because the headline uses the word "latest" rather than "last". The answer to the question can only be "no" (as Betteridge would require) if 1.) Zac Gallen was not in fact "sent packing" by the Marlins, 2.) Zac Gallen is not a star, and/or 3.) some other star was traded by the Marlins after Zac Gallen. #2 is Betteridge's best hope -- Gallen is a promising rookie rather than a star. But that feels like a technicality, and the answer to the main thrust of the question ("Is Zac Gallen the latest good player the Marlins have traded?") is definitely yes.

That said, it's a stupid headline where the editor obviously used the wrong word, changing it from a question about the Marlins' future intentions to a question of fact akin to "Was Carlson Kelly the catcher in Zac Gallen's first start for the Diamondbacks?"

Gallen didn't do anything wrong in the minors but it was still a big bust-out this year at AAA (K-rate jumped, BB-rate plummeted) and solid ML performance that has created the buzz. He wasn't on any of the prospect lists before the season started. For now, it's one excellent season. But if he can continue to K anything like 11/9 (or even 9/9) while keeping HR/9 well under 1, he will be a star.

Chisholm meanwhile was ranked around #60-70 entering the year. It's a good ol' challenge trade although given the Marlins got to see a further half-season of both it is very hard to see how they could not decide to flip those relative prospect rankings. It was only 94 PA but he did do better in the Marlins' system so maybe they knew what to fix. I suppose it's also possible that the Marlins don't like Gallen's motion and think he's headed for injury. (I have no idea, pure speculation.)

FWIW, although his error rate improved greatly, Chisholm's RF/9 plummeted after the trade. They've found the next Jeter!

So did Zac take Zack's spot in the rotation?

At this point, I don’t know why any player would be unhappy to be traded from the Marlins.

Spoonerize it and you've got the best porn star name ever. Of course, it's already pretty close to begin with.
