Is this walk-off backflip more disrespectful than a walk-off bat flip?

This video of Kenji Akashi’s walk-off backflip is astounding. This isn’t one of those simple “athlete can backflip” type things, but rather a full round-off into a flip that caught some serious air. I’m in awe of it, this also got me thinking.

What is fundamentally more disrespectful to an opponent: Flipping your bat on a walk-off home run, or cavorting into home plate with a backflip?

Paging Ozzie Smith to the magenta courtesy phone….

Back flip. Bat flip. Seltzer. Salsa. There's an episode.

I think this is just idiotic, because of the chance of seriously hurting yourself, or someone on your team.

Ozzie did his backflip when there was no one with 30 feet of him. This guy did it into a crowd of 20 guys who surely had no idea what he was planning.

His teammates didn't seem to mind.

Why are half the advertising/on-screen graphics in Japanese and half in English? Presumably this has been going on every time I've seen a game from Japan, but I've somehow always managed to miss it until now?

In the end, it's a failure because he missed the plate.

Kendrys Morales disagrees.

That back flip was awesome. I can only hope someone in MLB will do that at some point. I'm sure, unfortunately, that it would cause a benches-clearing incident, but it would be worth it.

I much prefer this to batflips. It's a walk-off, so the other team isn't even on the field any longer. He's doing this for his teammates, not to show up the other team.

Doing this on a 3rd inning homerun...eh, I'd refrain. But I have no problem with it on a walk-off homerun.

I find the batflip brouhahas boring. Sometimes I like the batflips, sometimes I don't. Usually the big difference for me is joy versus anger. I didn't like Bautista's famous one because it didn't seem joyful, same with Tim Anderson's thing the other week. This backflip I liked, there's a joy to it, he seems to be having fun.

And I think his teammates may have expected it. They seemed to give him room for it and I wouldn't be shocked if it was something he did regularly. That said the little leaguers I coach won our town league championship last year. After we got the trophies 11 year old Noah handed his to me and said "watch this coach" and in front of everyone did a perfect backflip. None of us knew he could do that.

i'm probably wrong but, iirc: this was his first one, he was saving it for if he ever had a walkoff

I think if you're going to let the guys fly their freak flag then you should just go for it. I want to see synchronized moves with teammates, pens hidden in the grass near the plate, interpretive dance, and whatever else on down the line til we reach a full-blown Ned Braden finale.

I think it should be allowed, with the caveat if you miss the plate on the landing, you are out.

Maybe Pablo Sandoval? Hope I don’t miss the highlights that day.

More disrespectful, and a lot more fun.

Entirely possible. One thing that people are missing is how unlikely it is that Kenji Akashi would hit a walk-off home run in the fist place. He's played for the Hawks since 2004 - and in that time he's hit exactly 11 home runs. He's had one season where he's hit more than one. He's one of the least likely guys to hit a walk-off that you could imagine. Let him enjoy it - it probably won't happen again.

I'm sure Ichiro could do backflips.

I dunno, celebrations on a walkoff usually aren't considered disrespectful for whatever reason. The game's over at that point. I remember the Prince Fielder "bowling pins" celebration, for example.

Disrespectful or not, I thought this was great, but it would have been better if he hadn't missed the plate on the landing.

It also just shows how incredibly athletic some of these guys are.

Anyway, when I was in h.s., our soccer team captain scored a hat trick. After the third goal, he did a back flip on the field. Nobody gave him any #### for it.

He's now a very high ranking official at a fairly stodgy government agency.

I absolutely loved that. Great comedy.

Knight was released a few days ago.
On the year, he had a 1.50 ERA in 12 innings (4 H, 1 HR, 3 W, 15 K), after an ERA in the low 2s spent mostly in the high minors last year.
