Israeli baseball team wins silver in European Championship, its best result ever

Israel’s national baseball team, which made history this summer by taking part in the Tokyo Olympics, won a silver medal Sunday in the European Championships, losing 4-9 to the Netherlands in the final.

Only a handful of the predominantly American Olympic team members also competed in the European Championships. The majority of the current team players are Israelis who learned the game locally.

It is the first time Israel is on the podium in the tournament, and only the second time the Jewish state competed in the uppermost tier.

Meanwhile, it was the 24th win for the strong Dutch team in the tournament.

For a lot of international sports Israel plays in Europe so they aren't playing head to head against the various other middle east nations with shall we say less than positive feelings towards Israel.

Kenny Lofton* and I attended a tournament a few years back featuring the U.S., Serbia, Slovakia and Croatia, won by the Serbs (they had a lot of U.S.-born players, while Slovakia and Croatia were mostly natives). I talked to a handful of guys from the foreign teams, including the first Slovakian-born** player who played professionally here. It was a lot of fun.

* Sadly, it was coincidental attendance. We didn't go together.

** Slovakian born when it was Slovakia. Elmer Valo was born in present-day Rybnik when it was part of Czechoslovakia, and Jack Quinn was born in Stefurov when it was in Hungary.

Way back in 2001, Russia won silver at the Euro Championships, but haven't won a medal since. (In Russia, baseball watches you!)

I find it both impressive and sad that Israel and Serbia can apparently field competitive baseball teams, but BBTF can't even muster one full side for an annual softball game!

Presumably that means too many Primates were playing for Serbia.
