NL LEAST entering Thursday

PHI 59-55

NYM has 4-1 lead in 6th in first game of yet another doubleheader
PHI has a 2-0 lead in 4th
ATL has a 5 pm start

Cardinals might manage to eke out a sweep here in Pittsburgh, after taking two out of 3 against the royals.... they are back in it baby.... (okay, not really but at least it might make August interesting enough to pay attention)
   5. cardsfanboy Posted: August 12, 2021 at 04:00 PM (#6034121)
Good chance for Cardinals to gain ground, another 3 game series against the Royals, followed by a 3 game series against the first place Brewers, followed by another series against the Pirates, then Tigers, Pirates and Reds before September. The team needs sweeps to truly make ground, but just winning series can help them out tremendously. And yes, I'm always an optimist until the team is mathematically eliminated. (Flaherty is starting tomorrow, and Mikolas is back next week so the rotation now solidifies itself being Flaherty, Wainwright, Mikolas, Happ and Lester (Kim is injured but will take over for which ever pitcher gets injured when he comes back)

Shades of 1973.....with the top 5 NL East teams bunched between the Mets 82-79 and the Cubs 77-84. And the Cubs weren't actually eliminated until the final day of the regular season's original schedule.
   7. cardsfanboy Posted: August 12, 2021 at 04:05 PM (#6034124)
LeBlanc hasn't been horrible for the Cardinals, but he probably loses out to the reputation of Lester in the pecking order. Same with Gant.
   8. cardsfanboy Posted: August 12, 2021 at 04:10 PM (#6034125)
Reyes turns an easy save into a hard save... 7 - 6 now after a two run homerun by the Pirates in the bottom of the ninth.

sure, LARS NOOTBAR looks like a series of letters on the screen after your kitty walks across the keyboard.

but Lars Nootbar hit his first HR for the Cardinals today.

if he makes it big, his candy confection is sure to be... nutty.

13-1 ... so far.

Is Trout coming back this year?
My money is on "no." I don't think the organization wants to risk anything with his health, and it'll allow them to play both Marsh and Adell every day, something they really need to be doing, without an awkward log jam.
   14. Walt Davis Posted: August 12, 2021 at 06:17 PM (#6034168)
Yep, it's moved out to the footbally 17-3. Another football score brewing with the Reds up 8-1 over the Braves in the 3rd.

EDIT: I guess the question for us Cub fans is whether the end to this season will be sufficiently bad as to achieve the 2003 Tigers embarrasment effect in just 2 months and force the Cubs to spend to be tolerable next year.
   15. Walt Davis Posted: August 12, 2021 at 06:24 PM (#6034169)
Depending on where it ends up today, Cubs run differential so far in August: 36 RS, 85 RA. Nearly 8 RA per game. In their miraculous 19-8 May, they only gave up 85 runs.
   16. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 12, 2021 at 06:46 PM (#6034171)
The pythag gods are now mocking Boston as they are down 8-1. Their 1 game win streak is over. Back to normalcy as the SP went 5, gave up 4 runs, the dying pen has given up another 4 so far and of course the bats went all crickets...
   17. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 12, 2021 at 07:19 PM (#6034173)
Since the Red Sox have no chance of winning this year, I really want either Tampa, the A's or the Brewers to win it all. These teams, over the last few years, just keep on winning with smallish payrolls and it really is fun to watch.
   18. Tom Nawrocki Posted: August 12, 2021 at 07:23 PM (#6034174)
Field of Dreams game is starting! I'm getting choked up just thinking about all the people Fox will interview while ignoring the game that's going on.
   19. AndrewJ Posted: August 12, 2021 at 07:50 PM (#6034175)
I might have said this on another thread, but the Yankees' road unis tonight are way better than their regular ones. Maybe it's the lack of white outline over the lettering, maybe it's the enlarged "NY" on the caps, maybe it's just the old-timey numeral font on the back. If I were the Yanks brain trust I'd seriously consider wearing these full-time away from the Bronx.
   20. The Gary DiSarcina Fan Club (JAHV) Posted: August 12, 2021 at 07:57 PM (#6034177)
I haven't watched much Yankees this year, so I thought it was a mistake when they started talking about Rougned Odor. I had no idea that's what he looked like without the beard. After years of seeing him in Texas against the Angels, I couldn't process a shorn Odor.

Hard to believe that the terrible 2010s Phillies farm system has spawned 3 20 HR in a season middle infielders.

Can you name these “sluggers”?
   22. JJ1986 Posted: August 12, 2021 at 08:05 PM (#6034182)
One of them is Cesar Hernandez.

The primary reason Gerrit Cole wishes he could pitch in this game is because in 1919, pitchers could apply any foreign substances to the ball they wanted to.

George Washington was born in 1732. The last MLB regular season game played in Iowa (June 14, 1875) is closer to GW's birth than it is to today.

Big Surprise: Homer Heaney gives back the lead in an Iowa minute, and it's now 5-3 White Sox.
   28. Tom Nawrocki Posted: August 12, 2021 at 08:34 PM (#6034191)
Jimenez with a three-run shot of his own, also into the corn in right field.

The quintana deal was not worth it. Eloy looks great in the sox throw back but would look amazing in Cubs home whites.

The Brewers had 2 guys with 5 hits each in today's game...that seems unusual. Maybe it happens more then I think....

The other “slugging” MI from the Phils system was traded for the “4th Ace” in 2010.

Galvis and Hernandez are correct.

What a gorgeous bunt.

Aaron Judge is big in Iowa, hitting his 2nd corn shot of the game, a 2-run HR to CF, and closing the gap to 7-6.
   40. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 12, 2021 at 10:43 PM (#6034211)
Giancarlo Stanton hits a 2-run HR to give the Yankees an 8-7 lead in the 9th, and ease my pain! Apparently Mystique & Aura made the trip.
   41. Tom Nawrocki Posted: August 12, 2021 at 10:54 PM (#6034212)
Well, that was a fun ballgame.
   42. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 12, 2021 at 10:55 PM (#6034213)
Well, that was disappointing. Still, a MLB success, IMHO. We’ll see if the TV ratings agree.

Mission One for the Yankees is to hack into Britton's computer and steal those blackmail files.

was shocked that he pitched the 9th.
   45. Tom Nawrocki Posted: August 12, 2021 at 11:06 PM (#6034216)
Britton can't afford Mystique and Aura's hourly rates.
   46. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: August 12, 2021 at 11:11 PM (#6034217)
The problem was, who else did they have? Loiasiga and Green have had more work than Britton lately. But as soon as he threw that first ball to Zavala after getting an easy out and then getting Zavala down 0-2, I had a sinking feeling that the top of the 9th was just too good to be true.

Still, seeing Stanton step up in the clutch for a change made the loss a bit more bearable. And that fabled White Sox bullpen wasn't so great after all.
   47. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: August 12, 2021 at 11:17 PM (#6034218)
The 3rd “slugging” MI is Jonathan Villar.
July 29, 2010: Traded by the Philadelphia Phillies with Anthony Gose and J.A. Happ to the Houston Astros for Roy Oswalt.

Just want to say - the "Field of Dreams" game was great, the field looked great, the audience was having a good time, the corn maze was great, the game itself was great. Even Joe Buck was tolerable. Mr. Manfred, you are not doing so well overall (please no Barstool Sports tie-in), but this was pretty cool. Do it again next year, please.

Also - cut down on the time between pitches.

Have the White Sox host one game here every year against a different opponent. Or maybe a doubleheader featuring the Sox and three other teams, with the first game in the daytime (which would be more in the spirit of the thing, yes?).
   51. SoSH U at work Posted: August 13, 2021 at 08:00 AM (#6034228)
I thought it was fantastic. I have no problem with MLB making it yearly , but I’d like to see them build on the idea and play more regular season games elsewhere. Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, the Midnight Sun field in Alaska, a military base etc. Baseball has a natural edge over the other sports in this kind of thing and MLB should take advantage of it.

Or even better, stage a tripleheader:

Game 1, 11:00 AM: White Sox vs. rotating AL opponent

Game 2, 3:30 PM: Cubs vs. rotating NL opponent

Game 3, 8:00 PM: White Sox vs. Cubs, with a rotating HFA
   53. The Duke Posted: August 13, 2021 at 10:27 AM (#6034241)
They should just let Tampa Bay play at all these places each year - it would prop up their attendance. They could just be the vagabond MLB team playing their games wherever anyone will let them play

Baseball has a natural edge over the other sports in this kind of thing and MLB should take advantage of it.

Not to mention letting MLB itself get a piece of the Great Stadium Extortion racket from local governing bodies all over the country rather than just playing the heavy for ownership groups. Follow along at home by betting on which city gets the next gimmick game at one of MLB's many Official Gaming Partners.™
   55. salvomania Posted: August 13, 2021 at 11:47 AM (#6034247)
Milwaukee, by about 25 miles, and St. Paul/Minneapolis, by about 26 miles, are both closer to the Filed of Dreams than Chicago.

Let those clubs get in on it, too.

In fact, add the Cardinals, so that every team blacked out in Iowa gets to play there.
   56. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: August 13, 2021 at 12:56 PM (#6034257)
Before I made my tripleheader proposal, I was tempted to say just let the Cubs play the Cardinals every year as the 3:30 game. Their rivalry long predates the one they have with the Brewers.

But do the White Sox have a traditional rival that lasts longer than any given year's hot division race? Is there even another AL Central team that outdraws the Yankees or the Red Sox in the park formerly known as Comiskey 2? I don't think that this year's matchup was a randomly chosen accident.

As for the blackout issue, that doesn't apply to nationally televised Fox games, does it?
   57. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 13, 2021 at 01:42 PM (#6034260)
Was the game a sufficient success that the White Sox will start promoting their Black Sox ties? Could be some overlooked money making opportunities, no?
   58. Howie Menckel Posted: August 13, 2021 at 02:10 PM (#6034267)
as God is my witness, DraftKings unironically offered me a $10 "free bet" on the Field of Dreams game if only I would bet $25 on a "single-game parlay" on another game yesterday.

also, from last month:

"Major League Baseball (MLB) has expanded its deal with DraftKings to include the live streaming of games on the sports betting and daily fantasy giant’s app.

The new agreement will see the introduction of the ‘Bet & Watch’ streaming integration, enabling fans with MLB.com and DraftKings accounts to watch one free, live game per week from the baseball league via the app.

It marks DraftKings’ first live streaming deal with a major North American professional sports league.

In addition, both parties plan to collaborate on future sports betting-themed game broadcast experiences that will live within the MLB.TV broadcast product. DraftKings is also now a co-exclusive official sports betting partner of MLB, joining BetMGM.

As part of the expanded relationship, DraftKings remains the exclusive official daily fantasy sports partner of MLB."

[my note: 'co-exclusive' = 'not exclusive']
