HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!
   2. TomH Posted: June 23, 2021 at 08:21 AM (#6025907)
A contrast in division-wide (non)clutchiness.

The NL Central has a composite record of 180 wins and 184 losses. Barely below average.
The NL West has a composite record of 186 wins and 185 losses. Very average.

The NL Central teams compositely have allowed 120 more runs than they have scored.
The NL West teams compositely have scored 104 more runs than they have allowed.

One might expect the combined win (& loss) totals of the two divisions to be about 22 wins apart, or "games behind". Instead they are 2.5 games apart.

The NL Central teams have a composite record of 53 and 42 in one-run games; while the NL West's record in these is 46 and 63!

This difference is about 2 std devs away from a random 50-50 expectation.

Stated a different way: ALL FIVE Central teams have a BETTER W-L record than their pythagroean runs scored - runs allowed would suggest. and ALL FIVE West teams have WOSRE* W-L record than their pythag. That is .. odd, ESPECIALLY because they have played each other in many (almost half) of their games!

* worse, but in some cases very close, a fraction of a game.

Interesting Tom!

That is interesting..

If you take the Diamondbacks out, the NL West is 44-47 in one run games.

edit: nevermind, i read the Pirates backwards. They are 1 game over their pythag. They also have the worst 1 run record in the NL Central at 8-8. I think the Reds are the best at 11-7. So, no anti-Dbacks in the Central

Vince Velasquez pitches 4 scoreless to get a 5-0 lead, then proceeds Velasquez it away by starting the inning W W 2B 1B K. Then goodbye VV, only to see the reliever give up a HR, hello, 5-5.
   6. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: June 23, 2021 at 04:03 PM (#6025972)
Phils go up 9-5 on McCutchen’s GS in the bottom of the 5th.
Sam Coonrod and David Hale do their VV impressions and now it’s 11-9 Nats in the 6th.
   7. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 23, 2021 at 04:05 PM (#6025973)
The Phillies took a 9-5 lead on Andrew McCutchen’s 5th-inning pinch-hit Grand Slam, only to have the Nationals score 6 in the 6th, highlighted by a Josh Bell Grand Slam, to take an 11-9 lead. Schwarber also has a 3-run HR, and 7 BB helped a bit, too, although they probably aren’t doing much for Joe Girardi’s disposition.
   8. Shohei Brotani (formerly LA Hombre) Posted: June 23, 2021 at 04:10 PM (#6025975)
The Giants are playing the Angels on a Shohei Ohtani start, which means the National League team is using a DH, and the American League team is not.
   9. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 23, 2021 at 04:13 PM (#6025977)
Is that legal?
   10. Shohei Brotani (formerly LA Hombre) Posted: June 23, 2021 at 04:18 PM (#6025979)
They're not taking away Shohei's children, so I think so.
   11. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 23, 2021 at 04:52 PM (#6025989)
Nationals broadcast says their game is the 1st in MLB history in which both teams have a grand slam & 3-run HR. Who would have thought? Now 11-10, Nationals, with Phillies batting in bottom of 8th.
   12. Howie Menckel Posted: June 23, 2021 at 05:21 PM (#6025994)
Phillies take a 12-11 lead

Nats take a 13-12 lead entering bottom 9th
   13. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 23, 2021 at 05:30 PM (#6025996)
Nationals sweep Phillies in Philadelphia, although just one of those new-fangeled 2-game series.
   14. Howie Menckel Posted: June 23, 2021 at 05:57 PM (#6026000)
Paolo Espino, who just got his first MLB win last week, collects his first save as the Nats survive.

heady times for the youngster, who [checks bb-ref]... er, turns 35 in January.

hey, they can't take this way from him !

Looks like that'll be the day for Ohtani. 6 IP, 1 run, 6 hits, 9 Ks, 2 walks, and a career-most 105 pitches. Was in trouble often against a really tough Giants lineup, but kept getting out of jam after jam. Really impressive outing.

[2] A microcosm of this is when the Dodgers had a 7 games in Milwaukee and Chicago where they went 1-6, including 3 extra inning losses. But the one win was the multiple grand slam game in Milwaukee. The Dodgers actually scored 32 runs and allowed 32 runs over those 7 games.

Like old times in Arlington tonight, I will be rooting for Elvis Andrus & against Mitch Moreland.

The Angels are in extras, and they're out of position players. Kurt Suzuki was hurt behind the plate, the other catcher Stassi already pinch-hit, and emergency catcher Ward was already in the game. Griffin Canning, last year's Gold Glove winner as a pitcher, is in left field.

Top 2nd TOR@MIA, first base ump Ryan Wills has had three calls overturned already.
Two by video challenges, one by the other umps in the park, who gathered and in effect said "c'mon! how did you miss that?"

Home plate ump Mike Estabrook has blown an unreviewable call when a nubber which rolled foul was picked up, but he called it fair.

And Laz Diaz is the third base ump, so he was behind the plate last night. {shivers}

Not a great crew. I'm not a big robo-ump proponent, but an eye exam should be part of the job qualifications.

Billy Wagner is not the most interesting interview.
   21. TomH Posted: June 23, 2021 at 08:52 PM (#6026023)
It appears T Ward last played catcher in the low minors in 2017; that was his primary spot back then.

Let me guess, did he talk about the alpacas he raises on his farm?

The Astros "Run Differential Tour" gets a +13 boost tonight.
   25. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 23, 2021 at 10:10 PM (#6026036)
11 Yankee BB tonight, but they’ve only scored 2 runs, and trail by one.

EDIT: ODOR 2-RUN HR FINALLY MAKES ROYALS PAY FOR THE BB.
   26. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 23, 2021 at 10:50 PM (#6026043)
Aroldis Chapman gave up 2 runs in the 9th, but Gary Sanchez’s HR tied the game 5-5, and Luke Voit drove in the game-winner. 6-5. Unfortunately, with the game running so long, I’ve missed most of the exciting foreign substance inspections on the west coast games.

re my [19] in TOR@MIA, first base ump had another call overturned in the game, at least another one, after three in the first two innings. (Sorry, I was not keeping score, could have been more?)

I'm sorry to mention the umps by name. I really don't want to know their names, I want them to be unknown arbitrators of the game. (Instead of the abattoirs of the game?) First base ump does not seem to be a MLB regular (after a little research) so hopefully we/he can blame it on nerves, or eating at a Bennigan's or something

It appears T Ward last played catcher in the low minors in 2017; that was his primary spot back then.

That sounds way more exciting to watch.

I'm, like, lapping the field here, back at the BDC Dome before a new Omnichatter even posts.
   29. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 24, 2021 at 02:04 PM (#6026135)
The midday heat and inadequate air conditioning must be taking a toll on BDC, since today’s OmniChatter was posted at 6:22 AM today. Better upgrade the A/C or build a new stadium STAT!
