HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!
[Bullpen raises hands vigorously, makes “Ooh! Oooh!” noises.]

Here's a stat that's no fun. Angel starters have given up no earned runs, and just two total runs, in the their last 16.2 innings. The bullpen has given up 18 runs in their last 14 innings. That is no f****** bueno.
   4. salvomania Posted: May 07, 2021 at 03:35 PM (#6017618)
They should keep the starters in.
   5. Walt Davis Posted: May 07, 2021 at 05:22 PM (#6017641)
Might be the end of the road for Todd Frazier. He was already pretty borderline but he was OK with the Rangers last year. Currently 1-27.

One for the BBTF cognoscenti. Cubs 3 Pirates 2, only 7 K in the whole game, 17 singles, 1 double.

Early season weirdness?

MLB OPS: 701
NL a bit ahead of AL overall but it's only that close because of pitchers and NL DHs. Looks like NL position players are around a 730 OPS.

Best-hitting position is DH; 2nd best is 3B. CF are out-hitting the other two OF positions and 2B are closer to LF than LF are to CF.

There are some big differences by league ...

AL OPS then NL
C 637 740
1B 685 752
2B 657 736
3B 771 734
SS 681 697
LF 660 748
CF 746 689
RF 670 743

DH 798 OPS is carrying a lot of the AL load. The AL is nothing but Nelson Cruz, JD Martinez and Mike Trout. :-)

The Rockies wasted a review call on a clear homerun that had already been replayed on the stadium tv... how incompetent are the Rockies management?
   9. cardsfanboy Posted: May 07, 2021 at 09:10 PM (#6017681)
Flaherty with a blast.. (and yes it was a blast) 3-0 Cardinals.

106mph off the bat, 416 feet.. .homerun by the pitcher.
   10. cardsfanboy Posted: May 07, 2021 at 09:44 PM (#6017685)
Watching mlb.tv and they do mlb flashback etc... but for the most part they are done in the last 5 seasons or less... they really need to expand it out, as a Cardinal fan, the Pujols/Lidge should show up, the Edmonds catch in Houston post season should show up.

but going past that, you have what some cubs people call the Sandberg game, but c'mon you have to include McGee in that one. You can throw a ton of other stuff over the past fifty years, stop focusing on the past two years. lI get that the point is that they know many people missed last season, but mix it up.

most stunning HR of the year?

hapless Lindor with his first at home, stuns the Citi Field crowd with a 2-run shot that ties the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the 7th inning
   12. phredbird Posted: May 07, 2021 at 10:02 PM (#6017691)

dan and jim talking about pujols ... ten years to the day after his first home run for the angels, he was released.

i guess i'll be surprised if the cardinals don't do something about getting him in a game at the end of the season.

Honestly, it is entirely up to Pujols at this point in time, I'm sure the team is already deciding on giving him a one day contract, it's whether he'll accept it or not.
   14. cardsfanboy Posted: May 07, 2021 at 10:18 PM (#6017694)
Flaherty 7 ip, 3 hits allowed, 1 walk, 0 runs with a 5- 0 lead, liking his chances at a 6-0 start, and this is the reason I make that 20 wins in a season is not a dead option. It's going to be difficult of course, but great pitching will always have a chance.
   15. Howie Menckel Posted: May 07, 2021 at 10:21 PM (#6017695)
some kind of bizarre feud going on between 2B McNeil and SS Lindor, possibly over a lack of communication on a grounder due to the shift.

McNeil made an out, then sprinted to the dugout and then locker room as if he was starring in an incontinence commercial. then when Lindor hit the big HR, he, too, went toward the locker room - followed by a number of teammates. then when a stone-faced McNeil came out toward his position, 1B Alonso tapped him in a seeming effort to ease the issue.

Lindor looked oddly somber in the dugout in the latter part of the batting half-inning for a guy who just got by far his biggest hit as a Met.

I will say, that just watching Carlson play, he's not a rookie, he has a fully developed veteran personality right now.
   17. phredbird Posted: May 07, 2021 at 10:34 PM (#6017699)

yeah, i like carlson.
   18. phredbird Posted: May 07, 2021 at 10:37 PM (#6017701)

on the subject of pujols, is he insisting that he wants to be an every day player?

i know these guys have a lot of drive and ego, but come on. he can't be serious.

can he take a minor league assignment and let himself get called up in sept. for a couple of games?

assuming he is OK with that ...

   19. phredbird Posted: May 07, 2021 at 10:37 PM (#6017702)

arenado proving his worth ...

We don't know, no comments exist out there... the minor evidence we have is that he was planning on retiring after this season.. beyond that, we have no real idea of his mind set

Wade Miley with a no-hitter through 8, but the game is still scoreless so he may not get a chance to finish it off.

Miley has a slight chance now.

Miley's chances are getting better by the minute.

$5 on Miley no-hitter !
   26. Howie Menckel Posted: May 07, 2021 at 11:00 PM (#6017710)
Lindor consoled by DSmith briefly at end of a defensive half-inning.

for bottom of 9th, McNeil and Lindor - the 1 and 2 batters - have a seconds-long encounter and Lindor seems to support McNeil. after a McNeil single, Lindor for reasons unexplained tries a sac bunt that goes about 2 feet and leads to a forceout of McNeil at second base.

#10: Not sure how long you've been MLBtv'ing but, if anything, due to lack of games, they are less focused on last year's highlights than usual. (I mean we had a Ben Gamel game-winning double.) They also seem to be mixing in this year's highlights earlier than usual (maybe for same reason). They've gotten slightly better over the years but their basic pattern is a) grab 15-20 highlights from last year play 5 'all-time' highlights, repeat for the first 2 months then b) add some current season highlights then c) sometime shortly after the AS break give up and just keep repeating whatever's in there. Seriously there have been seasons I almost wish we could get some commercials -- except what few commercials we get here in Oz run on the same repeat schedule and there's less variety.

Meanwhile, they got out of it and have a pretty comfy 5-1 lead, but in the inning I just saw, the Angels' defense was trying to be the answer to #1. And here we've got a home series against the Dodgers which makes it even more surprising to me that they didn't wait a couple of days and give Pujols a fonder farewell this weekend.

So 4 no-hitters already and we're only 20% of the way through the season.

Lindor just screwed his own pooch.

after the obvious hostility between he and McNeil in this game - and the numerous Mets clambering behind him from the dugout to the clubhouse (and McNeil) - this guy has the stones, with a straight face, to claim that oh, it was just a spirited debate between the two about whether a large animal in the clubhouse was a racoon or a "New York rat."

the NYC beat writers - yeah, they didn't buy it. but Lindor stuck to this ridiculous story - which postgame analyst Todd Zeile described as "mockery" of the beat guys. he also called it "complete nonsense" and "disingenuous."

Zeile said he appreciates a desire to try to downplay such incidents - but he played in NY, and he knows how this will go. after a series of challenges, Lindor was asked if he and McNeil really were "good."

Lindor replied that, hey, he could bring Jeff in and kiss on the cheek if they really wanted.
a beat guy replied, "ok, let's do that."

you're not in Cleveland anymore, kid - as you're about to learn.

Mets manager Luis Rojas says he knows nothing about a rat-raccoon situation. He is not playing into this story one bit. Rojas says he was satisfied that whatever happened between Lindor and McNeil was over and done with by the time he got down the dugout steps.

I didn't watch a game last year and had sling the previous two seasons so it's been about 4 years since I had mlb.tv
