Jacob deGrom has scored 4 runs and has 5 RBI. Has given up 7 runs, 4 of them earned.

Jesse Winker (CIN) leads the NL in OPS 344/418/630/1.048
A few years ago, he was fighting Nick Senzel for a spot on the team coming out of Goodyear. Two days ago I got an email from the Reds that pimped Nick Castellanos for All Star team. Jesse Winker deserves more respect, and publicity.

The Rockies go for the sweep this afternoon at home against the Padres. They're now 22-14 at Coors Field but 5-27 on the road. Nobody expected this Rockies lineup to be able to score on the road, but what's really crazy is that the pitching staff has a 5.78 ERA on the road, but just a 4.22 ERA at Coors.

On the topic of strange stat lines, has anyone noticed that Yasmani Grandal is hitting .149 but has a 120 OPS+? 10 of his 20 hits are home runs. And he has 52 walks. That’s right- he has 20 hits and 52 walks, absurd ratios.
   5. TomH Posted: June 16, 2021 at 03:52 PM (#6024586)
Grandal is also scoring 1 run per 4.3 at bats, which is higher than RICKEY'S career rate!

Another hit batter by Cardinals' pitchers, their 52nd of the year, putting them on pace for 124 (MLB record is 95).

In order to NOT break the record, the Cardinals would have to slow down to a rate of about 74 hit batters/162 games over the rest of the season, down from their current rate of 124/162.
   7. salvomania Posted: June 16, 2021 at 04:21 PM (#6024592)
In 2019 (the last full season), four teams had fewer hit batsmen all year than the Cardinals have now in 2021 through 68 games.

Castellanos deserves more national recognition, too. He's also hitting .351/.405/.616 and actually is ahead of Winker in fWAR 3.3 (2nd among position players in all MLB) to 2.7 (8th) thanks to superior baserunning and defense(!).

How will the Angels bullpen blow another lead today???

White Sox just keep rolling. Best record in baseball with three key players out. Of course no one thinks TLR or his coaching staff have anything to do with it
   12. Howie Menckel Posted: June 16, 2021 at 06:35 PM (#6024626)
Ian Snell allowed 1 H in 7 masterful IP w 10 K against the Mets on June 4.

next two starts, 10 ER in 7.3 IP.

suspicious? well, Snell got hammered for 10 ER in 6.3 IP in the two starts before the masterpiece.

these days, that - as it happens - provides "ground cover."

although the 20 ER in 13.6 IP all came on the road.
the lone home start was the 7 scoreless.
and all of his solid starts in 2021 (but for one in April) have come at home, actually.

   13. Tom Nawrocki Posted: June 16, 2021 at 06:46 PM (#6024629)
I'm suspicious that Ian Snell is still pitching at all.

Anyway, the Rockies finished off the sweep of the Padres, and are now 23-14 at home. That's a 101-win pace. On the road, they're 5-27, a Spidersian 25-win pace.

If you had told me in 1884 that between putting goop on a ball and inserting a cadaver’s tendon into a damaged arm only the former would be against the rules I think I’d have been surprised.

Of course that's not true, but this is your MO.

His coaching staff, for the most part, highly thought of and complimented regularly (especially Ethan Katz as pitching coach - the old guy, Don Cooper, outlasted many managers and was a bit of a legend around here). The stuff that TLR gets criticized for, both here and elsewhere, are rightfully deserved (including, but not limited to, not understanding the rules, overreliance on sac bunting, not understanding certain players limitations, bullpen usage, etc). The point of the criticism, outside of the constant drunk driving and overall old as #### jokes, is that he's actually hurt the team on occasions and they could be doing even better if he'd be less 1990ish. Of course, every team always questions their own managers and their bad decisions, including you and your current one.

The Cubs are just hurling the ball at Mets' players in the first.
   17. Howie Menckel Posted: June 16, 2021 at 07:35 PM (#6024635)
deGrom has fanned 3 of the first 4 batters, and all seems right with the world....
   18. JJ1986 Posted: June 16, 2021 at 07:45 PM (#6024636)
Jake has struck out 5 of 6, but he doesn't look quite unhittable struggling to put away Rafael Ortega.

This is looking like the Kerry Wood game.
   21. Howie Menckel Posted: June 16, 2021 at 08:05 PM (#6024640)
deGrom rips a 3-2 pitch into right field, and takes a 6-4 lead !

wait, I should clarify. in this game, the Mets have a 2-0 edge and deGrom has whiffed 5 of 6 Cubbie bears.

but for the season, deGrom now has knocked in 6 runs - and only allowed 4.

fans chant "M V P !" when he bats, which almost seems redundant at this point.

the hit raises his season average to .423.

that is not a misprint. and his ERA is 0.54, and ditto.
   22. JJ1986 Posted: June 16, 2021 at 08:07 PM (#6024641)
And he might be hurt.

   24. AndrewJ Posted: June 16, 2021 at 08:23 PM (#6024645)
Thinking about how dominant Dwight Gooden was in 1985 when he had a 1.53 ERA and about how deGrom's ERA is now basically a full run lower than that.

Mets lead 3-1, and after 2 batters in the fourth inning Keith and Ron in the Mets booth declare Cubs rookie starter Stock, in his Cubs debut, to be out of gas.

"So Stock is plummeting?" deadpans Gary Cohen.

Cubs MGR Ross, apparently playing an intense game of Angry Birds or something, has no one up in the pen - and we know where this is going.

Rookie walks RP/AL guy Reid-Foley to load 'em up with none out, and Ross apparently has his phone disconnected by a colleague. so a reliever gets up - but not before an angry lineout to third and then a 4-pitch walk to Lindor makes it 4-1.

5-1 after a groundout but maybe method to Cubs madness - Stock gets a pity call at 1-2 on Alonso on a ball that missed to end the inning.
   27. JJ1986 Posted: June 16, 2021 at 08:53 PM (#6024650)
Robert Stock has been around for awhile.

Gary Sanchez’s 2-run pinch hit HR gives the Yankees a 3-2 lead in Buffalo. Reports of his baseball death appear premature.
   29. The Duke Posted: June 16, 2021 at 09:15 PM (#6024653)
I predicted Degrom would only make it through 3. Sadly I was correct. His arm is borked.
   30. Howie Menckel Posted: June 16, 2021 at 09:35 PM (#6024656)
DBacks, who blew a 7-0 lead last night, attempt (?) to lose their 22nd straight on the road - that would tie the 1943 Philadelphia A's and the 1963 Mets.

but like Ryan and Carlton with the all-time K record, AZ can't relax with a couple of losses, as the Orioles are working on their 18th straight loss tonight.
   31. Walt Davis Posted: June 16, 2021 at 10:26 PM (#6024658)
As Howie notes, the terrible teams have fallen off cliffs. After a 12-14 April, the O's are 10-31. The Rangers are 3-15 (and down 2) over the last couple of weeks which included a 9-game losing streak. The Pirates went 12-13 in April and are 11-31 since. The DBacks were actually 14-12 in April and are 6-36 since (and down 1). 6-36 is just staggering and with 4 of their rotation on the IL, things aren't likely to get better soon.
   32. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: June 16, 2021 at 10:39 PM (#6024667)
Red Sox looking to hold on in another squeaker, up 10-7 after an Arroyo salami. The Red Sox staff is looking pretty average these days; bring back the sticky stuff!

Or maybe they weren't really any good to begin with....
   33. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: June 16, 2021 at 10:53 PM (#6024672)
Red Sox with the inappropriately named Darwinzon now on the bump. He is probably the least efficient pitcher the Sox have as his BB rate is ridiculous, 18BB in 20IP
   34. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: June 16, 2021 at 10:54 PM (#6024673)
After walking Freeman, of course, he gets Albies to ground out with the bases jacked. Lucky escape.
   35. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 16, 2021 at 11:30 PM (#6024679)
Jacob deGrom confident that it’s just a flesh wound:
deGrom met with reporters (including Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News) after the game and downplayed the current issue. While he admitted he’s frustrated with the series of developments, deGrom suggested he didn’t believe the three health problems were related and, more importantly, sounded confident he’d avoided any serious injury.
Three unrelated injuries is the good news?
   36. Howie Menckel Posted: June 16, 2021 at 11:30 PM (#6024680)
DBacks, desperately needing a win and trailing 4-2 in the 4th, inevitably turn to..... someone named Keury Mella for his season debut on the bump.

The single season era record is by far, not one of the safest records anymore, when you are only expected to go through the lineup 3 times and let relievers take over.
