What piece of Angels news will break Shohei Brotani's heart today?
   2. salvomania Posted: May 19, 2021 at 05:38 PM (#6019742)
Nice to have Tatis back.

First AB, single, SB, stranded at third.

Second AB, solo homer.
   3. salvomania Posted: May 19, 2021 at 05:58 PM (#6019746)
Third AB, double. Three-fourths of the way to a cycle.
   4. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: May 19, 2021 at 06:06 PM (#6019747)
Third AB, double. Three-fourths of the way to a cycle.

If you hit a HR in a blow-out, can you voluntarily stop at 3rd to get the cycle?
   5. salvomania Posted: May 19, 2021 at 06:25 PM (#6019753)
can you voluntarily stop at 3rd to get the cycle?

If it's a blow-out, the unwritten rules practically require it.
   6. salvomania Posted: May 19, 2021 at 07:02 PM (#6019765)
Fourth at-bat, just missed the cycle, had to settle for a second double.

Not a bad first day back from the COVID IL: 4-for-4, with two doubles, a homer, and a SB.

Both teams combined have 8 hits, and Tatis has four of them.
   7. salvomania Posted: May 19, 2021 at 07:53 PM (#6019772)
Had no idea until now, via Mets' broadcast, that manager Luis Rojas is Felipe Alou's son (and thus the brother of Moises Alou, and nephew of Matty and Jesus).

Ohtani's fastball is only sitting in the low 90s tonight. Uh oh

Hitting all those homers is wearing out his arm!

Red Sox up 6-1 in the 2nd, Sox pitcher Richards needs to not offer any free passes, just throw strikes!

I don't think so but you can fail to touch home then go to the dugout, get called out on appeal, I assume that's scored as a triple.
   11. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2021 at 08:34 PM (#6019780)
Bases Loaded no outs, for noted power hitter Jack Flaherty.
   12. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2021 at 08:34 PM (#6019781)
Pirates pitcher (Cahill) just can't find the strike zone right now, he's not being squeezed, he's no where near the strike zone.
   13. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2021 at 08:35 PM (#6019783)
Cahill pulled due to injury.
   14. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2021 at 08:44 PM (#6019784)
Flaherty nearly had a triple over the head of Polanco, but he made a fine catch and ended up with just a sacrifice fly scoring a run and advancing the runner from second to third. Then the Cardinals steal another base (the Pirates catcher apparently sucks at a Piazza level, when it comes to catching base stealers)

Cardinals now up 4-0 as Edman drove in two with a single up the middle. Nice start to this game for the Cardinals, 4-0 in the second inning.
   15. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2021 at 08:52 PM (#6019788)
Yea... Goldschmidt with a single, probably gets himself to over 100 ops+ for the season, I know not a big deal, but it's nice to see him moving the needle up.
   16. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 19, 2021 at 08:53 PM (#6019789)
Hernandez with a double in the 4th, now only a triple short of the cycle!

How many times does that get mentioned throughout the year...
   17. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2021 at 08:54 PM (#6019790)
Arenando makes it a serious number as the Cardinals take a 6-0 lead (60 cent drinks at mobile on the run tomorrow)
   18. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2021 at 08:58 PM (#6019791)
Yadier grounded into a double play, for his 263rd of his career, he's now 28th all time, the funny thing is that he was tied with Torii Hunter at this point, and Hunter is not a guy I would have pegged as a double play guy. (Among active players, Yadier is behind the all time leader, Albert Pujols with 403-- he's 53 above the second place guy -- Cabrera is second among active players with 326, and Robinson Cano, another guy I wouldn't expect to be high on this list is third among "active" players, with 284.

Flaherty is struggling, can't really find the strike zone, with a 6-0 lead, he just needs to stop playing the edges and go for it.

I gave up my PI subscription so I can't search for that (sorry not worth $80 unless I'm blogging and I'm not, so not worth the money) but yes, I'm fairly comfortable that it's a fairly uncommon occurrence. (which means it happens somewhat frequently, but it's still uncommon, but over the course of a season I would think there is probably 30 or so times that someone gets a single, double and a homerun)
   20. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: May 19, 2021 at 09:10 PM (#6019795)
Marlins score a run on a 30 foot bases loaded single.
   21. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2021 at 09:55 PM (#6019801)
Flaherty is trying to sacrifice, and the Pirates pitcher instead nibbles and loses control and walks him, which is even better than a sacrifice. Another bases loaded no out situation for the Cardinals this game.
   22. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 19, 2021 at 09:56 PM (#6019802)
Yankees leading Rangers 2-0 in top of 7th, with Corey Kluber doing the 2021 pitching fad most recently accomplished by Spencer Turnbull. He’s at 70 pitches, so he has a chance, but given his injury history, I doubt he’ll be allowed to go much beyond 100 pitches, if that.
   23. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2021 at 09:57 PM (#6019803)
Polanco's defense is the only reason that it's just a 7-2 game and not a 10-2 game.
   24. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2021 at 09:58 PM (#6019804)
NL future Roy with an rbi single to make it 8-2
   25. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:06 PM (#6019805)
Kluber now through 7 innings on 85 pitches.
   26. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:12 PM (#6019808)
Bullpen will need to cover the rest of this game, Flaherty struggled all game but managed to only allow two runs, but no way is he going out in the 7th after 105 pitches.

   27. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:17 PM (#6019810)
Cardinal announcers "everyone in the lineup has been on base except Yadier".... Yadier with a single "time to change the graphic"... lol.
   28. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:19 PM (#6019811)
uggh... I hate the fact that my day off from work is Thursday, it's also the typical off day for mlb teams (it's either Monday or Thursday) so I have a day off, and no game to watch.... uggh...
   29. Meatwad Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:19 PM (#6019812)
Through 8 now
   30. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:20 PM (#6019813)
Kluber through 8 innings at 93 pitches! Seems like the pitch count won’t do him in. Still 2-0, Yankees over Rangers.
   31. Ziggy: social distancing since 1980 Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:20 PM (#6019814)
We're seriously going to have two in a row? This is getting silly.
   32. Meatwad Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:22 PM (#6019816)
Ziggy at least it isnt Seattle again.
   33. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:22 PM (#6019817)
Right handed pitcher, the Cardinals bring in a pinch hitter, the choices are a right handed batter (Nogowski) or a left handed batter (Carpenter) and for some reason they go with the right handed batter...... not understanding the logic there.
   34. Ziggy: social distancing since 1980 Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:23 PM (#6019818)
I dunno, Skubal has a no hitter goign through 0.66 innings!
   35. Ziggy: social distancing since 1980 Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:24 PM (#6019819)
nevermind

Welcome to three true outcome baseball.
   37. Hombre Brotani Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:28 PM (#6019823)
Justin Upton makes a catch on the run, then hosed the runner tagging up trying to score with a strike from left field. That's impressive athleticism.
   38. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:28 PM (#6019824)
One out to go.
   39. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:29 PM (#6019825)
Two in a night, we've seen that before, what's so special about consecutive nights?
   40. Hombre Brotani Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:29 PM (#6019826)
That's a lot of no-nos.
   41. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:29 PM (#6019827)
Well that was underwhelming.
   42. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:30 PM (#6019828)
KLUBER DOES IT. NO-HITTER!

I think the 2021 smaller ball might be a tad pitcher-friendly.
   43. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:30 PM (#6019829)
kluber with the 6th no hitter of the season
   44. Ziggy: social distancing since 1980 Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:30 PM (#6019830)
Goodness. Okay, who is pitching tomorrow's no hitter? My pick is Rich Hill against BAL.
   45. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:31 PM (#6019831)
At this rate, we are going to have something like 24 no hitters this year.
   46. Meatwad Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:31 PM (#6019832)
Whats the record for teams being no hit in a season? I feel like seattle will crush it this year.
   47. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:33 PM (#6019834)
Immediately after Turnbull's no-hitter last night, I posted:

Turnbull does it! He's thrown this week's first no-hitter!!
"Ha ha," I thought. "I just made a little funny. Quite clever, I am."
   48. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:35 PM (#6019835)
Kluber's Game Score tonight: 95

Turnbull's Game Score last night: 94
   49. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:44 PM (#6019837)
With an 8-2 lead at one point, now the Pirates have the tying run at the plate.
   50. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:51 PM (#6019838)
no hitter, no schmitter, the ubiquitous no hitter is now a thing.

Let's see someone throw a complete game 1 hitter! Now that will be unusual.
   51. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 19, 2021 at 10:52 PM (#6019839)
The most amazing thing so far this is season is the notion of...1st place Red Sox. You want miracles; that's a miracle(though I suspect it to be short lived)
   52. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2021 at 11:10 PM (#6019842)
where was the Red Sox projected to finish the season by most people? I'm sure it was a 1-2 Yankees/ Rays projection with the rest of the teams in the division being pretty much interchangeable.
   53. Dillon Gee Escape Plan Posted: May 19, 2021 at 11:22 PM (#6019846)
FanGraphs had them at 85 wins (now pegged for 89), PECOTA had them around 79-80.
   54. stanmvp48 Posted: May 19, 2021 at 11:22 PM (#6019848)
Rockies three games in SD. One run, 12 hits, 44 strikeouts . Would have won the second game if Blackmon had scored from second on a double over the centerfielders head
   55. The Duke Posted: May 19, 2021 at 11:57 PM (#6019851)
Edmundo Sosa of the cards has 22 at bats and has managed to get 5 HBP which is close to the league lead. I see nothing about his style (ala Rizzo) that would suggest a predisposition for HBP. Weird stat
