Jarren Duran misplays two fly balls, shouts at fans in Red Sox vs. Royals game

Jarren Duran is having a tough time in center field lately.

It all started when the Boston Red Sox outfielder was criticized for his lack of effort on a fly ball during a July game against the Toronto Blue Jays. What should have been an easy out turned into a wild inside-the-park grand slam.

Duran’s issues continued Sunday in Kansas City, where the Red Sox lost 13-5 and dropped three of four games to the last-place Royals.

Duran had a crazy seventh inning. He misplayed two fly balls. The first miscue appeared to be the result of losing the ball in the sun, which, in fairness, was pretty bright in Kansas City on Sunday. The second was a tougher play, but still one that a major league outfielder should come up with….

Duran at one point got into a verbal back-and-forth with Royals fans who presumably were heckling him, and Red Sox right fielder Alex Verdugo came over to hold back Duran and get him to focus on the game.

Yeesh, back to back triples on balls that should have been outs.

Jarren is a little touchy because he's not a very good fielder. He better pick up the pace at the plate or he'll be history.

At least he didn't wait for Alex Verdugo to come over and pick it up.

The replay from the bullpen camera showed IMO that Verdugo was closer to the ball once Duran saw where it was, but since the original view was the press box camera and Duran gives up chasing the ball long before Verdugo enters the frame it looked like Verdugo only had a chance because Duran gave up. Duran should not have been criticized for lack of effort on that. Lack of ability to see the ball, sure, absolutely.

These are not the only times Duran has had difficulty seeing the ball in suboptimal conditions, and it's worth noting that the opposing CF playing in the same conditions has not suffered the same fate. I'm willing to believe it's not an attention span thing, or a lack of interest in holding a MLB job. Then it comes down to ability. Since it's Boston, I'm going to guess that at some point a year and a half from now he'll take an eye test and find that he hasn't been able to see very well this whole time. That's usually the amount of time it takes for a physical deficiency to be discovered by the medical staff.

A HA! That would explain his career .265 OBP, he has no idea if the pitch is a ball or strike because a guy with 128 Hits and 32BB should have way less then 188K.

Even a noted a noted strike out king like Mark Reynolds had more hits/BB combined then K's. It's not a good sign for a slap hitter like Duran to K as much as he does.

Re 4. Duran badly misplayed the ball and then made no effort to correct his mistake. You're going to get criticized for that.

The first drop was a sun issue. He needs to learn to deal with it. The second one, he was spooked by the wall. I guess he needs to learn to deal with it.

Yeah, you earn your goodwill. If he hadn't already butchered up center field people would give him slack for the sun jobs, but his numerous gaffs (on and off field) are adding up in the wrong direction. All that, I don't think he deserves the vitriol he is getting.

If he were a Met, they would just pop one out and get a look. You can always just put it back in later.
