Javy Baez named ‘MLB The Show 20’ cover athlete

CHICAGO —Javier Baez has been named the cover athlete for “MLB The Show 20.”

The game announced the cover Monday in a series of tweets.

Any thoughts from the video game fans among us?

I am not a video game fan but Baez must be really liked by "the kids". Why not go with Judge, the most high profile New Yorker? Maybe he was on last years cover?

Couldn't fit him on the box.

It's been probably 10 years (maybe more like 15?) since I played a console game - baseball or otherwise - but I presume, at least based on advertisements, that certain elements of console play have advanced beyond what I remember...

I'd think someone like Javy fits the mold of "Look at all these cool things you can do with players on a console now!" -- which fits Javy more than Judge.... I mean - this isn't 90s era Hardball for the Commodore 64 where it's just standing at the plate and timing the swing right to hit HRs.... or where a bunch of 8 bit pixels representing Bo Jackson just run circles around everyone else anymore.

At least, I presume that...

Oh, man, Hardball! Have we discussed this before, how it was damn near impossible to score other than by home runs? Prescient, as it turns out.

For non-homerun hitters, what I found was most the effective strategy was hitting a really high infield popup that would drop between the catcher and pitcher and the defense wouldn't be allowed to move to that area because of limited programming. This would give you base runners for your homerun hitters, guys to steal bases with (which was really easy if they were a fast type players), and a way to manufacture runs.
