Jim Caple, former ESPN, national MLB writer, dies at 61

Jim Caple, a noted baseball writer who spent 17 years at ESPN, died Sunday, his wife wrote on social media. He was 61.

Caple covered 20 World Series for ESPN, the St. Paul Pioneer-Press and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He also covered a half-dozen Olympic Games. He closed his career writing for The Athletic.

He was also one of the most popular columnists for ESPN.com’s Page 2, where he took a lighter look at sports and rarely missed a chance to poke fun at the New York Yankees. He turned that into a book, “The Devil Wears Pinstripes.” He also co-wrote the book “Best Boston Sports Arguments” with fellow sportswriter Steve Buckley and penned a novel, “The Navigator,” which was based in part on his father, who was a B-24 navigator in World War II.

Jesus, the ALS and FTD combo package. Wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. Poor guy.

Looking back at some of his work, I’m reminded of how ESPN, and sports media in general, used to be much funnier, much more able to laugh at sports and at itself, in ways that seem almost alien now.

ESPN used to be a daily must read. As is true of many, many websites that no longer hold much appeal.

not to derail the thread, but...have you considered that what you describe might be a natural consequence of your perspective changing as you get older?

Caple was a really good guy. I wrote to him a few times in those "funny days of ESPN" regarding the enjoyment I received from some of his articles and he always responded in a kind and thoughtful manner. RIP.

Caple, Simmons, Neyer, Stark, etc. They were good and at times super funny. As BBC points out, ESPN was daily reading 20-25 years ago(holy cow are we old!)

Yes, 20 odd years ago ESPN.go.com was the first stop for daily baseball articles and enjoyed the articles very much.
