Joakim Soria, 37, retires after 14-year career as relief pitcher

After a 14-year career that spanned 771 appearances on nine different teams, relief pitcher Joakim Soria has decided to retire from his baseball playing career. His agent broke the news to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic late Wednesday night.

Soria came up in 2007 to immediate success and served as the Royals closer for most of his first five seasons, twice making the All-Star team and finishing 10th in AL Cy Young voting in 2010 when he had 43 saves and a 1.78 ERA. He had a down 2011, losing the role of closer at one point, but still nailed down 28 saves before the season ended. In 2012, however, he had to undergo Tommy John surgery for a torn UCL in his right elbow.

I remember that when he joined the Royals he was *immediately* the team's bright spot.

It probably doesn't carry through to the current generation of Royals fans, but there was a time when following the team meant an intense focus on how Soria's, or Raul Ibanez's, or Jeremy Affeldt's year was going. Because there wasn't a lot else to root for.

I know he never wanted people to use it any more, but his "The Mexecutioner" nickname was really good.

Soria was a lot of fun to watch when he first came up -- a great curve (which I might love more than anything else in baseball), a rare three-pitch closer, great command, so smart. And as #1 said, there wasn't a lot of smart pitching with great command on those Royals teams.

The best three Rule 5 picks under the modern system have to be Johan Santana, Josh Hamilton, and Joakim Soria, right?

Jeremy Affeldt

Affeldt gets love , but no mention of Greinke?

I was going to throw Dan Uggla out there for consideration, but Soria's career was better than I realized.

Greinke was obviously a major talent. You'd be following his development even if you were rooting for a winner.
