Joba Chamberlain’s belongings, baseball history to be auctioned Saturday

Asouth Lincoln auction Saturday will sell 249 Joba Chamberlain baseball cards, Joba Chamberlain bobbleheads and Joba Chamberlain locker room nameplates — including one from the 2009 World Series-winning New York Yankees.

And all of it belonged, until earlier this year, to Joba Chamberlain.

As did the 21 pairs of new Adidas athletic shoes, nine baseball gloves, six TVs, 24-bun hot dog bun steamer, Jagermeister shot machine, kettlebells and cookware, poker chips and popcorn machines — and hundreds of other items filling the 4,000 square feet of his former home.

Through a trust, Chamberlain bought the house at 9101 S. 53rd St. for $1.15 million in 2014, when the Lincoln Northeast grad and former Husker pitcher was still a couple of seasons from the end of his 11-year major league career.

Serious reaction: That sucks. It's a huge bummer that someone as talented as Joba has had things turn out this poorly.

Not-serious reaction: Damn midges.

Pinnacle Bank took ownership of the two-bedroom, five-bathroom house in January
Huh? Two bedrooms and five bathrooms?

I think I might feel the exact opposite. Midges and Joba rules may have been unlucky breaks for him, but b/c he started with such a high level of talent, he could have had a decent career had he put in more effort. He stopped caring, and the back end of his career is on him.

This situation is a bummer, but I think it'd be more of a bummer for the guy who worked hard but just didn't have the talent to overcome some of those unlucky circumstances.

Peak Joba was my favorite Yankee, so I'm biased towards his later indifference.

Did Joba stop caring or did he just get hurt?

Might the Jagermeister shot machine have had something to do with it?

He did. 5 WAR / 3.5 WAA his amazing first two years. Then 3 WAR / -1 WAA after that. Basically, one year as an average SP and then 300 games as an average reliever. Made $10 million.

It seemed like it should have been more given his start, but decent is exactly what it was post-2008.

My first thought was that I always forget Joba had died. Then I remembered Hideki Irabu is the one whose death I always forget about. Hopefully it will be a long time before I forget Joba died.

Huh? Two bedrooms and five bathrooms?

Zillow says it has 4 bedrooms. Certainly looks like it has more than 2 from the photos.

Odd that he'd leave everything. I could see leaving that old stool with one leg that's shorter than the others that we've all got, but why leave your ATVs? Too depressed to clear it out? That's the best that I could come up with.

On a lighter note: a 24 bun hot dog steamer and a Jager machine are exactly what I would expect Joba to own. Also: bug spray.

And though Zillow lists it as having 4 bedrooms, when you read the description it says 5 bedrooms.

Somewhere I picture some realtor entering this in MLS sputtering, "I can't believe they asked the guy in the $2000 suit to type this in. COME ON!"

A house like this would have a lot of rooms that could be used as bedrooms but aren't currently. So it's a 2-bedroom for a fact-checked news story, but 4 or 5 for a realtor advertisement.

Joba's not dead. Unless it's a very recent event, which would explain why he didn't respond to the Lincoln Journal-Star's requests for comment.

Generally, expensive houses have more bathrooms than bedrooms. My theory is that the wealthy have more anuses than normal people.

Maybe it has a hot chicks room.

This is not true, by the way. Not to over-reveal myself, but I grew up in expensive houses. They have more bathrooms than the average, but not more than they have bedrooms. The house I lived in in high school had six bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths.

The condo I live in now, having been downwardly mobile for decades? Two bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and a half bath off the kitchen.

Yeah, I guess so. Although I'm surprised they would "fact check" something like that. I mean, if a house has 4 bedrooms but one of them has been converted into a billiards room and one into a home theater, that's still 4 bedrooms IMO. But I guess I'm used to looking at NYC real estate listings, where some people will call pretty much any room besides the kitchen a "bedroom" as long as it has a window.

According to Wikipedia, Joba is still alive. I don’t know whether Itchy Row is being sarcastic or trolling or confused.

I see you avoided addressing the extra anus aspect of his post. Interesting.

I'd say none. Reading the headline, I too wondered whether Joba had died (making this an estate sale), likely conflating his fate with Irbau's.

Committed suicide.

The first house I remember living in had one bathroom. There were 6 of us (2 parents, 4 kids) by the time we moved to a 3 bedroom house in the 'burbs that had the major luxury of a half-bath in addition to the bathroom (a fifth child was added the next year). No place I've lived since then has had more than one bathroom. This may be what has led to the chronic constipation that afflicts most members of my family.

Though as all primates know, correlation =/= causation.
