Joe Girardi, Jean Segura have confrontation as Philadelphia Phillies lose to Toronto Blue Jays

The injury-depleted Philadelphia Phillies lost a game, another player and their temper.

Television cameras showed a confrontation in the dugout between Phillies manager Joe Girardi and second baseman Jean Segura during Sunday’s 10-8 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Segura committed two errors. One miscue came in the first inning when Segura misplayed a soft one-hopper by Randal Grichuk.

“That’s a bench conversation, meant for the bench,” said Girardi, who was asked about a half-dozen times about the incident. “You can ask all you want; you got everything you’re going to get about it. I’m done with it.”

At one point, Segura had to be restrained by coach Dusty Wathan.

Segura saw a rat and Girardi said it was clearly a raccoon

It was a wild game. Phillies 'outfielders' (who are converted infielders in desperation out there) were making every play entertaining for Jay fans (well, I enjoyed it). But it is sad to see as I can only imagine how annoyed the manager was getting then to have a guy playing at his position make a couple of errors must have fully set him off. To get a full idea of how weird this game was Harper tried to bunt and it wasn't a 1 run game or extras - it was due to his being hurt but the team was desperate. The Jays GM seems to be a genius for working hard at depth, depth, depth this past winter. I suspect 2021 will be won by whoever has the most guys healthy at the end.

Lucky for them, only the New York media would see through an excuse like that.

What I don't get is with the AAA shuttle, it should be possible to run a shorter pen, and just bring up fresh arms as need. The odds of you needing 8 different RPs in a series is pretty low.

The problem with shuffling up and down from AAA is once sent down they have to stay down for 10 days unless someone is hurt.

fun fact:

the last position player to produce 5+ career WAR after being drafted by the phillies in the first round was chase utley.

bonus fun fact:

between 2002 (cole hamels) and 2014 (aaron nola), the phillies didn't draft a single player in the first round who has 6+ career WAR.

I think they were supposed to make it 15 days down before a callup to counter act Dodgers roster shenanigans, but the pandemic put that on hold.
